The Morning Walkthrough: If Glen Davis can function, he can play
A. Sherrod Blakely, CSNNE – “The only positive on the injury front for Boston involves Glen Davis, who was able to practice Friday after missing Wednesday’s loss at Phoenix due to a sprained right ankle. ‘We need some help,’ Davis said. ‘We need as many bodies as we can. As long as I’m functional, I can play with the pain. If I can function, I can play.’ In addition to the sprained ankle, Davis is still working his way into shape after suffering a broken right thumb injury on the eve of the regular season. ’Every time he missed a shot (in Friday’s practice), he looked at his hand,’ quipped Rivers. ‘Every time he didn’t get to a guy on defense, he looked at his ankle. He had two crutches today. But he’ll go tomorrow, I’m pretty sure.’”
Mark Murphy, Boston Herald - Giddens, barely able to contain his joy, hopes this development really does take shape as part of a patchwork starting five that is also expected to include Perkins, Rasheed Wallace, Tony Allen and Ray Allen. ‘Being a first-round draft pick and then not getting a chance to play, this is very humbling,’ he said, momentarily choking up at the thought. ‘I know I’m so fortunate and so blessed to get it, it’s made me appreciate ball a lot more and playing. It’s a dream come true,’ Giddens continued. ‘It’s probably the biggest chance of my NBA career. I’m going to be thinking basketball nonstop like I do anyway, but now I’ll be out there.’”
Frank Dell’Apa, Boston Globe - “The Celtics’ first unit concluded yesterday’s practice with Tony Allen at point guard and J.R. Giddens at forward. Coach Doc Rivers would not confirm a starting lineup for tonight’s game against Toronto, but with Kevin Garnett (hyperextended knee), Paul Pierce (knee infection), and Rajon Rondo (hamstring strain) out, the Celtics could be using some unprecedented combinations. ‘We went over every single set, with all kinds of crazy, different lineups,’’ Rivers said, ‘because we may have to have those [tonight] and we are going to need some semblance of offense.’”
Chris Forsberg, ESPNBoston – “Perkins confirmed he had plans to talk to NBA Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations (and league disciplinarian) Stu Jackson Friday. With 10 technical fouls, the most in the league, Perkins was hoping to have his most recent two rescinded. He expressed confidence they would after a confab with Jackson. Perkins spent some extra time at the free-throw line following Friday’s session, working with assistant coach Tom Thibodeau, after some struggles at the charity stripe out West. Boston’s center thought the practice offered a good chance for everybody to get back to basics. ‘I think we needed [practice],’ said Perkins. ‘Some of the younger guys needed the reps, including myself, just to kinda get the offense down pat, and go over the defensive schemes.’”
