The Morning Walkthrough: Rajon Rondo is no Ricky Davis
A. Sherrod Blakely, CSNNE – “With Rondo sitting on 18 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds through three quarters, Boston’s reserves urged him to hit the glass in the fourth. ‘Guys over on the bench were telling me to get a rebound,’ Rondo said. ‘I wasn’t trying to. One time, Paul and I were going for it at the same time. He took it. I didn’t really care. I was just making sure the ball didn’t bounce out of bounds.’ Rondo got the board he needed with 7:08 to go, grabbing the rebound on a miss by Toronto’s Jose Calderon. ‘It’s nice to have (the triple-double) but the biggest thing is to get the win,” Rondo said. “I’d hate to get a triple-double where I had a big game and we lose.’”
Steve Bulpett, Boston Herald – “Rondo’s day also included a banked-in 3-pointer in the first quarter. That made him 3-for-3 from long distance in the last two games after hitting just 3-of-27 to start the season. The last three attempts have all been necessitated by a dwindling 24-second clock. ‘Yeah, I’m getting hot right now, huh?’ he said with a smile. ‘I’m shooting them in practice. I’m shooting them before the game. I’m just trying to extend my range, but that’s not my focus. It’s just that I had to shoot those shots at the time. You know, I’d rather drive all day long.’” And the bank shot? ‘Yeah, I called the glass,’ he said.”
Gary Washburn, Boston Globe – “What the Celtics bring every night is depth, and it flourishes because each player knows his role and the more heralded players are content with deferring to teammates when they are hot. Wallace scored 29 points yesterday, his most since dropping 36 on the Bulls Nov. 8, 2007, as a member of the Pistons. At 35, days such as these are going to come rarely for Wallace, but when they do, the rest of the Celtics are savvy and unselfish enough to allow Wallace to step back in time and become 1997-98 Rasheed for two hours. And Wallace still has enough left to produce when he’s in the spotlight.”
Frank Dell’Apa, Boston Globe – “‘They’re used to playing a 1 o’clock start,’ Rivers said of the Raptors. ‘We talked about getting off to a great start, and we did, obviously, then they caught up. But I thought that was big for us, and then we closed the game out. There was one stretch in the fourth quarter where we kind of were playing the clock, and they almost got back into the game, and then we got a couple great stops. [Wallace] was phenomenal, big shots he made, post plays he made, I thought he was great defensively. [House and Wallace] are shooters – they can miss five in row, make five in a row. All we talk about, what we have on our board is, ‘If it’s your shot, take it. If it’s not, pass it.’”
Frank Dell’Apa, Boston Globe – [Rajon Rondon, on his triple double] -”‘It’s nice to have it, but the biggest thing is we got the win. I’d hate to get a triple double or have a great game and lose, that means nothing. But to get a win, it’s OK, and [tonight] we’ve got a different game, so we’ve got to move on. It’s not like I’ve got a week to sit back and think about it – move on to the next.’ ‘He’s our energy beacon,’’ said coach Doc Rivers. ‘Without him I don’t know where we’re going to get it from. I told him before he may have to play a lot of minutes. That’s the only thing I don’t like, even though he is young. We still need to buy minutes for more guys.’”
Jessica Camerato, WEEI – “Not only did Rondo look for his teammates, he also looked for his own shot when necessary. The player who was once dared by opponents to shoot nailed a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired. And after missing critical free throws against the Clippers last month, Rondo showed no hesitation in getting to the line. He earned a trip to the charity stripe when he was fouled shooting the ball over his shoulder as he fell to the ground. While this was just the latest instance in which Rondo produced an All-Star caliber performance, he currently ranks 16th among all NBA guards in fan voting.”
Steve Bulpett, Boston Herald – “The C’s ended up launching 26 treys for the game, hitting 11, but Rivers thought these were better attempts than usual. Rondo set the tone when he directed the two layups before going outside. ‘We felt in the last couple of games that we’re driving and throwing the ball out of the paint,’ Rivers said. ‘We showed on film that we needed to drive and keep the ball in the paint. Then we got the 3 after that. And that’s our premise: If you get some inside, all of a sudden everybody shrinks and you get the 3’s. I thought us starting down low with drives and posts led to the Rasheed 3’s, the Ray 3’s and the Eddie (House) 3’s.’”
Mike Ganter, Toronto Sun – “The win by the Celtics was the seventh in a row, nine if you count pre-season, when facing Toronto. The poor start didn’t decide the game, but it did set the tone. ‘It was a combination of us not being aggressive, settling for jump shots and not attacking the paint,’ Jarrett Jack said. ‘As the game went on, we got aggressive and started attacking. We were able to get some easy baskets and knock down some shots, but those first two minutes showed us you can’t be lackadaisical. Against that team you have to play a full 48 minutes.’”
Doug Smith, Toronto Star – “‘Our bigs aren’t used to trying to help on drives and trying to get out. We got caught a couple of times trying to over-help a little bit.’ It’s as if the Celtics, owners of the best record in the East at 26-9, looked around, saw the matchups and anointed [Rasheed] Wallace as the Raptor killer this time around. ‘You never know with a team like that, everybody is a wild card,” said Bosh. “Rasheed, Ray Allen, Kevin (Garnett) when he’s playing, Paul (Pierce). They can all score the basketball and have all been `the man’ on their teams in the past. So it doesn’t surprise me. He made some tough shots but that’s what he does.’”
