Doc Rivers’ All-Star fate in Celtics’ hands
An honor the Celtics’ recent tailspin could keep Doc Rivers from experiencing this season.
After Boston has won only 6 of their last 14 games, Rivers is now in serious danger of seeing someone else coach the All-Stars. Because Cleveland coach Mike Brown coached the team last season, and an NBA rule prohibits the same coach from coaching consecutive All-Star teams, the coach of the second-best Eastern team will be granted the honor of leading the All-Stars.
Right now, the Celtics are 1/2 game up on Atlanta and 1 1/2 up on Orlando, with a brutal stretch of easily losable games coming up. Games against Orlando, Atlanta, and L.A. all remain on the horizon, which could make it difficult for Boston to remain in the East’s second slot long enough for Doc to be named All-Star head coach.
If Doc is selected for the honor, the entire Boston coaching staff will participate in the game. Let’s hope the Celtics’ can win enough to stay in that second slot. But if he gets there, the Eastern Conference All-Stars better hope Doc doesn’t get thrown out of the game…
Nobody wants to see Tom Thibodeau’s substitution patterns on All-Star weekend.
