Report: Celtics contemplating Michael Finley

Michael Finley is old. Really old. But he can also shoot.

The Boston Celtics are thinking about signing 36-year old guard/forward Michael Finley, who was bought out today by the San Antonio Spurs. (Marc Spears Twitter)

Is it a good idea?

It depends. If Finley has anything left to offer, absolutely. He’s a solid player, a good shooter, and a pro’s pro.

But all signs point toward Finley having nothing left. He hasn’t scored a single point since Feb. 6th, a time that spans over four games played, four DNP-CD’s, and 53 minutes played. He’s averaged a whopping 3.7 points per game this season, which equates to only 8.5 points per 36 minutes.

Chances are, he’s only a fossil at this point. But with Tony Allen and Marquis Daniels being the C’s only two backup wing players, they could use any wing guy with a legit jumper. Finley, if he’s not quite a dinosaur yet, could be that.

Instead of signing a washed-up pro who's been totally useless this season so far already, they should take a look at the D-League, where there are a number of good guard-forwards available who are under the age of 35.

Agreed. But the things Finley would bring are his veteran experience and nice outside shot. Doc Rivers, as much as we'd like him to, isn't going to give any young guys a chance. Definitely not now, as the season winds down. He's been against young guys, for whatever reason, for a long time. He would consider playing a guy like Finley, but I don't think he'd ever give any minutes to an unproven D-League callup, no matter how much better he may be than Finley.

Except at this point in his career, Finley is basically more unproven than some D-League prospects who have been lighting it up this season. I'm not even sure Finley can still dribble.

I agree with you, absolutely. But there's no way Doc Rivers plays a D-Leaguer. Not a chance.

I love Doc, but he has to get over this hump. Celtics should make use of 10-days more rather than rent-a-washed-up-veteran. At least Nate Robinson is under the age of 26. Last thing we need is more age on that team. Better no change than a bad change like this.

If they wanted a grandfather figure, couldn't Danny Ainge pop on down and visit the locker room now and again? Or Tommy? That'd be free.
