Morning Walkthrough: KG not feeling potential rest

The Celtics have gotten rid of their morning walkthrough, but that doesn’t mean we have to. Here are a few Celtics links, and maybe even an NBA link or two, to help wake you up and get you focused for the day.

Chris Forsberg, ESPNBoston – “Before Friday’s game, Rivers suggested he’d be open to sitting Pierce and Kevin Garnett if it meant getting them more practice time and allowing them torecover during the remaining games before the postseason. It was an idea met with hesitation from the principle parties. But Garnett being someone who previously stated he’d run through a wall if Rivers asked him to, Garnett acknowledged he’d oblige with his coach’s wishes. ‘I’m not really feeling that idea, but, hey this is the ‘Doc Rivers Show’ and we are just guests on it,’ said Garnett. ‘So whatever he feels is best. You know, Paul and I, I think I speak for both of us, we don’t really feel that. But practice does make everything better. You get to clean up a lot of different things. We’re not ones that like to miss games and he threw that idea at us, but we’ll see. He gives us a lot of rope around here, Doc’s really good at the dialogue and speaking with us, he only asks that we are honest with him. So I don’t suspect that to be continuous, but for the most part, it’s about having a rhythm and playing well going into the latter months.’”

Julian Benbow, Boston Globe – “‘Nobody wants to be booed at home by the home crowd,’ he said. ‘That really sat with me that night ,to be honest, and I think it sat with everybody.’ Before they crushed the Indiana Pacers, 122-103, at the Garden last night, the Celtics met to air thoughts and feelings. Some players talked, doing self-analysis in cliques. They had gathered to watch movies for inspiration, a form of long-term motivation more than short term. Celtics coach Doc Rivers sat them in front of the videotape. They looked at the first quarter of the Memphis game — not specific edits as they had become accustomed to, but the game as it unfolded — and watched as the wheels fell off, missed shots leading to hollow defense. ‘We just had open dialogue,’ said Kevin Garnett.’Just general conversation . . . I think the best thing about this team since I’ve been here is that we’ve all been able to talk to one another, critique each other and be positive and get results out of it.’”

Dan Duggan, Boston Herald – “The Celtics were up 29-23 after one quarter, and the lead ballooned to 67-47 at the break. Despite 23 points from Roy Hibbert, the Pacers were unable to get the necessary stops. ‘We played with 200 percent more energy tonight than obviously the other night,’ Kevin Garnett said. ‘To concur with what Paul said, you never want to be in a situation where you’re getting booed at home. Home is supposed to be where you lay your head at and where you’re most comfortable at. We had to re-establish that here. I thought tonight the results of us playing hard came out, and obviously we hit some shots tonight.’ And as they walked off the court, they were met with the familiar sound of cheers from the Garden faithful.”

Chris Forsberg, ESPNBoston – “Even the Pacers admitted this was a tough time to encounter the Celtics. ‘We were playing a wounded tiger,’ sighed Indiana coach Jim O’Brien. ‘They came out and pounded us, and we never recovered from that.’ Friday’s win was the first step in reestablishing themselves as playoff contenders, but the Celtics know there’s more work to do. Pierce again acknowledged that Boston isn’t a team that can simply flip a switch when the postseason arrives; rather, they need to start showing consistency now. ‘We’re supposed to be able to bounce back, that’s the type of team we are,’ said Pierce. ‘The important thing for us is to play better. We want to start building these habits going into the playoffs and it’s not too late. We’re going to use these last 18 games to try to gather some momentum and just start playing better basketball. We’re going to try to win all of them, if we don’t, regardless, even if we lose some games, the key is to feel good about the way we played and leave it all out on the court.’”

Frank Dell’Apa, Boston Globe – “The Celtics went with reserves for the final 66 seconds of the opening quarter, holding a 24-23 lead. Over the next 5:24 spanning two quarters, they stretched the advantage to 13, on four Robinson 3-pointers and a Davis 3-point play. This second unit is an eclectic mix of the team’s two oldest players, Finley (37) and Wallace (35); two of its youngest, Davis (24) and Robinson (25); plus Daniels (29). Of those five, Davis has played the most games as a Celtic. Finley and Robinson are so new to the system the team can only expect to execute one or two sets while they are on the floor. But, because of Finley, Robinson, and Wallace’s perimeter shooting abilities, the reserves can spread the floor and freelance.”

Steve Bulpett, Boston Globe – “The people in the seats had to be wondering whether a good Pacers gust might blow their heroes into the Charles yet again. Hey, if New Jersey could do it, then all possibilities were on the table. Until Nate Robinson said no. Robinson entered with 1:06 left in the opening period and decided this should be a rout. He stole Indy’s inbounds pass after Marquis Daniels hit a turnaround, and he drilled a 3-pointer from the left wing. The Celts could breathe a little easier with a six-point edge entering the second quarter, but Robinson was evidently not satisfied. He hit three straight treys in a 1:07 span to create a double-figure cushion that would remain the rest of the night.”

Jessica Camerato, WEEI – “The Celtics only watched the first quarter of their loss to the Grizzlies, but that 12 minutes of film was all they needed to get the message. ‘You could say that was enough,’ Rajon Rondo said prior to Friday’s game against the Pacers. ‘We knew what happened in the game. We didn’t need to watch the whole game.’”

Dan Duggan, Boston Herald – “‘We gotta find more practice time, in my opinion,’ center Kendrick Perkins said. ‘I know we got an old squad and we need rest, but we can rest in the summer time. I feel like we have to find more ways to get practice in, get more work in and kind of just go from there.’”

Steve Bulpett, Boston Herald – “‘When our main guys are struggling, we’ve got to get them going first,’ Perkins said. ‘That may take away from my offensive chances, but that’s the way it has to be. I can’t worry about that. No matter what I’m asked to do, I just have to be consistent at it. That’s something I’m really going to work on these last games before the playoffs.’ Perkins had a rather calm 10 points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes vs. Indiana, but Doc Rivers singled him out. ‘Perk won’t get a lot of credit tonight, but I thought it was one of his best games in a long time because of the picks,’ the coach said. ‘He was a human pick machine, just flying around, got guys open. They got the points . . . you don’t get an assist for a pick, but if you did he probably would have led the team in assists tonight.’”
