Ainge: I think Paul Pierce wants to stay a Celtic

Stay for the name on the front, Paul.

Danny Ainge said he’s not sure what Paul Pierce will do in regards to his free agency, but Ainge DOES believe Pierce wants to remain a Boston Celtic forever. (Boston Herald)

“We were negotiating an extension in good faith,’’ said Ainge. “He’s worked hard to become a free agent, but I still think that in his heart of hearts he still wants to stay in Boston.

“It’s all a negotiation,’’ he said. “Risk is involved in all of these things. But I’m telling him that we would like him to come back and make another run at a title.’’

The Herald also mentions that Pierce could potentially earn a max contract of $96 million over four years with the Celtics, or $93 million with another team. Can somebody please give me a reason why every piece I read on Pierce’s opt-out mentions a max contract? Pierce ain’t getting a max contract. Not from the Celtics, and not from anybody else. He’s not the same player he used to be, folks. The only way Pierce gets the max is if one of the teams with cap space offers its GM position to Isiah Thomas.

I still think Pierce is coming back. Call me a homer if you want, but I think it’s pretty damn realistic to assume Pierce just wants to restructure his contract. Everything Pierce has said — both during and after the season — makes him sound like a man desperate to stay in Boston his entire career. The only thing I’m worried about is this supposedly hard-ass agent of his: The Celtics don’t need to be dealing with Scott Boras Jr.

Agreed, but I highly, highly doubt they’ll give him anywhere close to a max deal.
