Don’t get me wrong, I’m still against the Avery Bradley draft pick. But with every high-flying aerial maneuver I see him complete, I become a little more enamored with his potential.
Get on the bandwagon already, Bradley is going to be great. He has all the athletic talents he needs to succeed in the NBA, the rest is just confidence in his shot, and learning the point guard position.
Doc Rivers was an incredible point guard in his day, one of the best to play the game, and he’s got Rondo to learn under.
Dude! Seriously! I cannot understand the posting on this page that this draft was a night to forget! What?!
Bradley has NBA ready defense, athleticism out the ying yang, and can hit the spot up jumpers!
He is TA at the point with handles and a jump shot! Not to mention he can play either guard spot. We needed a backup for Rondo and Ray, now we have a guy that could be both! Yeah it may not have been our biggest need but it was a need that was filled through the draft and he will be looked at as a steal in the future. No other player available at the 19th spot, who was the #1 rated prospect coming into college, was going to help the Celtic’s now or be nearly as good as what I think this kid is going to be.
Good for Danny to look beyond just NEED and draft based on who the best available player is. In a couple years we’ll need a new SG, SF, and PF too so we’ve got lot’s of needs all accross the board.
Good job for picking another stud in the middle of the 1st Danny! He’ll soon silence the doubters!
1) Doc already said Bradley can’t play alongside Rondo. 2) He was a major disappointment in college. 3) He’s at least a couple years away. I agree with his potential, but the Celtics needed help NOW and they did not need another point guard.
Drafting for need is a fools game. You take the best potential, best player you can at every spot.
And you know for a fact that if they had drafted a big man at 19, and he tanked, 90% of people out there saying Bradley was a bad pick would be crying “Why are you gambling with the 19 pick, Danny you suck!”
For as your points:
1) He said he’s not sure he will, he’s also said Nate and Rondo can’t play together, which they did for stretches. Bottom line is it’s matches, if teams have a small line-up, and are playing a smaller SG, Bradley can certainly play out there. He’s got a 6’7 wingspan, and the ability to guard players slightly bigger than him.
2)He played for Texas, and was asked to be a starter in a position he doesn’t know, in a system he was just learning. This isn’t fantasy basketball, you can’t just throw guys into a spot like your moving pieces on a board and expect them to just run with it. Given time, with the right coaching and right mentoring (Doc and Rondo) he will be great.
3)You will not get immediate help at any position with the 19 pick. Ever. Even top 5 picks are hit and miss in that department. Wall, Turner were NBA ready, Favors maybe but that’s debatable. Bottom line, no one at 19 will be instant impact, so drafting the best available player with the best potential (and a guy that was very high on Danny’s board who he never expected to be there) was without a doubt the smartest thing they could do.
Guys like Damion James and James Anderson could have helped right away. But one thing I didn’t foresee when I hated the pick so much was the ability to trade Rasheed’s contract. That will let the C’s shore up the more pressing needs via trade, rather than the draft. Don’t worry, the pick is growing on me, even if I still don’t think he’ll help this season.
He might now, but he absolutely will help in the future. Either as a reliable back up in 2012, or if he really progresses, as a great trade chip for a sign-and-trade in 2013, when his rookie contract is up, and the Celtics can use his bird rights to sign him, and deal him to an over the cap team for great value.
Either way, he was the right pick, and yes, they can use Sheed’s contract, plus the MLE to deal with their immediate problems.

Steal of the draft at 19, mark my words.
