More “Paul Pierce staying put” talk

Staying put? I sure hope so.

In case you didn’t trust me earlier when I wrote it was likely that Pierce stays in Boston, here’s Steve Bulpett on the matter:

While there is still the possibility that another team will make – or has made, by the time you read this – the proverbial offer to Paul Pierce that he cannot refuse, it is expected he will finalize a new deal with the Celtics shortly.

Pierce did not opt out of the final year of his contract (and a crisp $21,513,521) to make a splash in the free agent market. According to sources close to Pierce, the plan is to work out a contract with the Celts that meets two ends – the team’s need for luxury tax and salary cap relief and the captain’s desire to remain with the club.

So while Pierce will be helping the Celts with this move, he is not hurting himself either.

I highly doubt another team would make Pierce an offer he cannot refuse. Not before all the other free agents have decided on new homes, anyway. Pierce isn’t nearly as desirable as he once was.

He’ll be coming back home to Boston, methinks. The only potential Pierce suitor that really gives me worry is the Clippers. If he wants to go play back home, and could get offered more money, would Pierce do it? My heart tells me no, but that’s the one option I’m afraid of. Hopefully the Clippers spend their money elsewhere.

I may not be a fan of Pierce but I don’t think the Boston Celtics that I’ve known all along will be Boston Celtics without him. I hope he stays, otherwise it takes some sense away from Doc returning.

People just don’t understand who Paul Pierce is. This is a man who is acutely aware of his legacy, and going down in history in the conversation as one the greatest Celtics, when years from now people will then be saying “Man that Paul Pierce, maybe the best Small forward to ever play for the Celtics, he’s right there with Larry Bird.” That is worth so much more than any dollar value. He was never going anywhere, there was never any question.

Agreed. He loves the Celtics tradition, and desperately wants to win another title.
