Celtics offer Ray Allen, talk to Tony Allen

Trusting TA is like trusting Sherry Palmer. But I have actually learned some trust in him.

The Celtics have made an offer to Ray Allen, according to NBA Fanhouse’s Chris Tomasson via Twitter. The terms of the offer, which was confirmed by Danny Ainge, were not disclosed.

Whatever the offer was, I’m assuming it won’t offend Ray. The Celtics understand his importance. (Boston Herald)

“Oh, it’s huge,” he said. “I mean, we need Ray back. He’s big for our team and what we try to do. You know, Ray has sacrificed more than anybody on our team of the Big Three. So it’s huge for us to bring him back.

“We need that shot. We need him in the locker room. It’s as big a signing as we could have.”

The coach then paused.

“For us,” Rivers said, “it’s as important as LeBron going wherever he goes.”

Doc Rivers, meanwhile, believes Ray wants to stay a Celtic but worries about another team blowing him away with a huge offer. (CSNNE)

“He wants to be a Celtic,” Rivers said. “The problem is, Ray has to do his business. He has to do his job. We’re just hoping that someone doesn’t come out and has so much money to offer, that he basically can’t turn it down.”

So if you’re scoring at home, we have two things to worry about in regards to Ray: 1) Some team throwing a whole bunch of money at him, and 2) the prospect of playing alongside Lebron, Wade and/or Bosh being too intriguing to turn down.

On to the other Allen, the Celtics have been in talks with Tony Allen too.

Ainge acknowledged that Tony Allen, who played a critical role in Boston’s run towards the NBA Finals this past season, is also a player Boston has had discussions with about coming back.

“We just haven’t come to any agreement,” Ainge told CSNNE.com. “But, yes, we’re talking with Tony.”

I still can’t believe I actually want Tony Allen to be a Celtic next year. This time last year I was more or less trying to raise money so I could buy out TA’s contract myself. Now I finally trust Tony, even though it’s a known fact that everyone and their mother overachieve in contract years. (By the way, ”everyone and their mother” definitely does NOT include Marquis Daniels.)

It’s so funny, I am hoping they keep TA too. I never thought I would, but now I am.

Yup, I’ve done a complete 180 on TA. Actually, maybe not a COMPLETE 180. He’s still the absolute last person I want with the ball as the clock winds down and the C’s need a bucket.

They wont be a lot of 2/3s available for the C’s to replace Tony, and given his limited offensive ability, obviously there are a few names I’d rather see. But, the bottom line is, whatever chips the Cs do have (MLE, Sheeds contract) needs to be used to shore up the front line. And Tony, since we have his bird rights, may really be our only option. I’m ok with it, but in a perfect world, I want a guy who can score, reliably, to be backing up Pierce.

I do too. But what if C’s got Rudy Fernandez in a trade, signed a big man with the mid-level, re-signed Tony and came into next season with a bench of Bradley, TA, Fernandez, Big Baby and Center X. That’s a hell of a bench.

Who do you trade to get Fernandez though? Wallace’s contract is in play obviously, But Fernandez will make only 1.7mil next year, you have to get the deal within 80% of wallace’s contract (about 5.3million) Who does Portland throw in to make up that almost 4mil difference? They already waived Gomes, and I highly doubt their about to throw in the towel on Oden.

Even if they did want to clear space and might be interested in Wallace’s contract, I just don’t see the pieces to make the trade work.

Sorry, Fernandez makes 1.1 million next year.

Leaving Portland with 0 options if Oden goes down again. Plus Camby’s contract will ent him 9mil next year, so with Rudy’s 1mil, the Celtics have to match 10mil in contract. The only pieces the Celtics really have to add some money there is Big Baby or TA (If they sign and trade TA) as I highly doubt Portland is going to be interested in any other FAs that Boston has bird rights on to sign and trade (Maybe Nate, but I think he’ll earn more than 5mil next year, which is all Boston could sign him for, to make this deal match.) So either way, I don’t see a way we make it happen and keep both TA and Baby.

Very good points. C’s would have to add something else to that deal to make it work. Not sure if it’d be worth it.

Couldn’t the C’s trade for Rudy with draft picks and cash?

I’m not sure. I don’t know the rules exactly, but that would be nice.
