Celtics to meet with Kwame Brown

The day Kwame Brown's fall from grace began.

Oh, dear lord. The Celtics have set up a meeting with Kwame Brown. I hope he doesn’t have to take a cab to the meeting: I hear he has trouble catching them. (Boston Herald)

As a testament to the Celtics’ willingness to kick the tires of every big man who might help the cause, Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers have set up a meeting with Kwame Brown tomorrow in Orlando.

“We’re checking out a lot of possibilities – it’s still very early in the process,” Danny Ainge said today of what is certain to be a broad casting call for big men, including Shaquille O’Neal.

Ainge said he has not set up a meeting, to this point, with O’Neal.

The 6-11 Brown spent the last two seasons with the Pistons, and in strictly a backup (13.8 minutes per game) role averaged more rebounds (3.7) than points (3.3) last season. But his value as a shot blocker (0.6 career average) may be what the Celtics are looking at now.

Brown, of, course, is better known as one of the greatest draft disappointments of all time.

In case reading the sentence, “Brown, of course, is better known as one of the greatest draft disappointments of all time,” wasn’t enough to clue you in, I think it’s safe to say the Celtics would be better off without this meeting.

Kwame Brown? Sweet Jesus, I never thought it would come to this.

We’ve gone from Euro-sticks to this now? KB has no tires. Sign Shaq and end this nonsense. And make Shaq play a high post where he can pass and set picks and let Rondo roam free to the hoop. He can also get to the boards with 2 steps that would take Kwame not tripping to get to. Let’s have some good news next post; please?

      James –

“And make Shaq play a high post where he can pass and set picks and let Rondo roam free to the hoop.”.

Really ?? And you think someone is gonna guard him in the high post? …on account of his jumper?
Meanwhile, you’ve also taken him out of rebounding position, on account of the fact he’s too slow to crash the boards, unless he’s already in the paint, at this point in his career.
In either case, he’s too slow to retreat into defensive position off of missed shots (which is the Celts preference on missed jumpers: establish the defensive perimeter to avoid opponents’ fastbreak baskets).

Have we reached that point already?

Where is Eric Montross when we need him?

This is bad, seems every day the big man list gets worse and worse..Please don’t let Ray hear this news of Kwame…I don’t think he will see that as a chance to revenge the Lakers next year.

People need to relax. First, it’s just a meeting, Danny is just evaluating all options, if he doesn’t like what he hears then nothing will come of it.

No matter what, there’s no way in hell Danny offers him more than a minimum contract. So what’s the risk? He defends, and he rebounds, two things the Celtics need. And maybe, just maybe, KG and Big Cliff Ray can actually get through to him and get him to reach even a small fraction of the ridiculously high potential he had that made him a #1 pick. And if he doesn’t, Doc will sit his ass on the bench and he’ll rack of the DNPs.

No need to try to talk me into Kwame Brown, even at the minimum. I’m just hoping this is only a meeting, nothing more.

Forget the meeting, lose his #, and move far, far, away from even thinking about him EVER again!!!! He is a cancer and I would only want him back on the Lakers.

All Kwame has to do is block shots, ‘block out’, rebound, which he can and has, and defend, where he has demonstrated he can handle the pick & roll and the low post. On offense, he can’t catch, he has lousy footwork and he rushes his shots (e.g. he misses); however, he is replacing (and later augmenting) Perk, whom the Celts don’t rely upon for offense.

KB will come for the Veterans’ Minimum Level, of which the Celts have as many as they wish to issue (not subject to the team salary cap, but only to the player limit — which is 15). If he doesn’t workout — and he might in this limited role — they inactivate him.

Brown is one of the most collossal ‘busts’ in NBA history. However, just because he didn’t become the player he was expected to be doesn’t mean he can’t (potentially) fill the limited role that the Celts need.

Kwame isn’t just bad offensively: He’s earth-shattering, Tony-Allen-at-his-worst-times-ten bad. It’s not worth it, even if he plays a little defense, even for the minimum. Even having Kwame take up a roster spot is a waste.
