Clippers sign Vinny Del Negro, leave me speechless

Not to be outdone by the Celtics’ meeting with Kwame Brown, the Los Angeles Clippers have signed Vinny Del Negro to be their next head coach. (Yahoo!)

Del Negro was fired by the Chicago Bulls in May after going 82-82 in two seasons and making two postseason appearances. Del Negro and Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Dwane Casey were finalists for the job and had second interviews in Los Angeles on Monday.

Mike Dunleavy stepped down as the Clippers’ coach midway through last season and continued as general manager until he was eventually fired. Dunleavy’s assistant Kim Hughes finished the season as interim coach.

Del Negro made a good impression on Clippers owner Donald Sterling and other team officials when he interviewed last week.

What, was Rick Pitino not available?

And Donald Sterling just continues to hit home runs.

I’m pretty sure he’s embraced being a joke at this point.

I lived in LA for a long time and even had Clipper season tix so I could see the Celtics, Bulls (Jordan time) and other good teams. Consistently, more visiting team fans every night than Clips fans. Pretty sad considering the amount of talent they have wasted. Sterling should have the team taken from him. He is absolutely the worst owner ever and doesn’t deserve to own a franchise (of any sort, even a KFC). Dunleavy was a very good coach and GM (replacing Baylor who just couldn’t take it any more) and loses his job because Blake Griffin gets injured and loses his season? Pathetic is the word for the Clips.

HAHAHA – “of any sort, even a KFC” – I think Dunleavy and Del Negro would make great cashiers. I’ll agree to disagree with your opinion that Dunleavy is a good coach.

Was he a bad coach because Griffen got hurt? Or Davis is a flake? Or the talent sucked?

Because his team was unprepared, he routinely subbed in completely cold players during crunch-time, and his teams always underachieved. The talent in LA isn’t that bad. It really isn’t.

Sounds very much like Doc’s coaching effort during the 27-27 run this past season; poor substitutions, players tuning him out, etc. and he had much better talent. Any team with Baron Davis at PG will underachieve. Those players are not as good as you think. If so, who would you want as a Celtic other than Kaman or Gordon?

It sounds a lot like Doc’s coaching… except Doc did it on purpose. Davis is talented, Kaman is legit, they had Camby there, Gordon. They had some decent talent.

When players tuned out Doc that happened because he “did it on “purpose”? And 27-27 was also “on purpose”? I think you are way wrong on that.

Davis is a flake and ball hog (I watched a lot of GS games as I am on the west coast), Camby got traded in February and the rest are on their 5th, 6th or 7th teams. Look at the Clips early season games and they were in most of them. Coaches do not take shots, rebound, etc. Ask Doc. Would he have preferred better rebounding all season? (Dumb question but obvious.) If so, and remember they were 23rd this past season as opposed to 3rd best in ’08, then why didn’t they board better? It’s not the coach that sucks all the time. It’s the players responsibility to do their jobs and many nights the Cs coasted, and even flat out QUIT this past season. The coach on the Cs that mattered was Thibodeau. Just my opinions…Go Cs…
