Fan blog: The case for Ronnie Brewer

This post is part of our entirely user-generated fan blog. To write an article or short post, all you have to do is sign in to your Celtics Town account here (or create one here), and you will instantly be able to create a blog post. It’s that easy.

I’m not sure about our cap space situation right now, but I have a target in mind: Ronnie Brewer. Simply put, this guy’s a stud.

He’s 6’7 and plays the 2 and 3 spot. Basically, he’s TA with a few more inches and a little bit of common sense. Right now he’s not getting that much attention from other teams, even though his stats are pretty good –10 points, 3 boards, and 1.8 assists per game for his career. Now here’s the catch; last season he was injured and lost a little bit of productivity. But the guy’s only 25 years old, he can fly, and the injury was a torn hamstring — nothing to worry about. Brewer can provide a spark off the bench when Ray or Paul need a rest or can wreak utter havoc in the paint alongside Rondo. Like I said, I’m not sure about our cap situation, but this guy is worth some money.

(Editor’s note: Due to the fact that Brewer is worth more than the minimum, any deal for Brewer would likely have to include either 1) Rasheed’s contract or 2) a guy like Robinson or Daniels in a sign-and-trade.)

Brewer is a restricted free agent. So Memphis would have to agree to a sign-and-trade, as Boston has 0 cap room to offer him anything straight up (and spent the MLE and JO.)

Meaning the only way it works, is if, for some reason Memphis has no interest in signing Brewer, and really wants to cut salary. If boston agree to pay him within 80% of Sheed’s contract (meaning about 5.4mil) and you pull a sign and trade. I don’t want to pay him 5.4mil that’s for sure. So unless their willing to add another piece (Damarre Carrol?) to match that salary, and make Brewer’s more reasonable, I don’t see it.

Of course, all of this is predicated upon Memphis deciding to go with Rudy Gay over Brewer. It seems likely they’ll trade one of them, as after the TA signing, they have 3 players in the SG/SF role. I don’t see why they throw 3mil at TA, if they wanted to keep Rudy Gay and Ronnie Brewer as well. It seems unlikely they match offers to Brewer, but it seems just as unlikely that their interested in anything the C’s can offer in a sign and trade. Other than the C’s agreeing to over-pay him straight up to make the trade work, as I mentioned above. And that just wouldn’t be a smart move for them.

I had a brain fart and forgot they already signed Gay to a ridiculously absurd contract. Wow. Not sure how I forgot that one.

Lol. Yeah, there’s no way they keep Brewer.

Ronnie is pushing to head back to Utah now, things aren’t looking good that the Celtics are even in the conversation.

Yeah. Looks like they won’t be in on him.
