Nate Robinson close to re-signing with Celtics

The Donkey could be wearing Green again.

Nate Robinoson, the Diminutive Dunker, is close to re-signing with the Boston Celtics. (Boston Herald)

Aaron Goodwin, the agent for Nate Robinson, said yesterday the two sides could reach a deal by the end of the week.

“Things are going well,” Goodwin said. “We’re just trying to get something worked out. But both parties are talking.”

Unlike they had with Allen, the C’s don’t hold the so-called “Larry Bird rights” to Robinson, and as a result, can’t go over the salary cap to give their backup point guard more money.

I’m almost positive Mark Murphy is wrong about the amount the Celtics can pay Robinson. I’m pretty sure the Celtics can offer Robinson as much as $4.8 million in salary next season, due to a salary exception called the non-Bird exception. Then again, Salary Cap for Dummies can only help if you read it correctly… and reading that stuff is like reading a physics textbook.

P.S. – Leandro Barbosa is now off the table and Murphy reports that Rudy Fernandez seems to be out of the question:

Portland guard Rudy Fernandez was thought to be another target, though talks between the Blazers and C’s appear to have fallen apart.

“I don’t think it’s going to happen,” a league official said. “That deal came and went.”

Why, again, didn’t the Celtics re-sign Tony Allen? They’ve GOT to have a plan, no? I’m still not convinced they do, though. Consider Danny Ainge guilty until proven innocent.

I’m starting to get really worried :S I guess they’re waiting for the Heat to make a few moves so that they’ll know what to expect… Rasheed Wallace’s contract is the most intriguing thing right now…

I’d have to think Sheed’s contract is a HUGE trading chip. It expires immediately, so teams can get under the cap instantly. I’m just interested to see who they bring in, if they bring in anybody. They still have a couple needs on the bench. Backup wing (or two), another big man, and a point guard. Call me crazy, but re-signing Nate is not the answer. He’s the same guy who was benched for a portion of last year. It wasn’t like there was no reason for that.

Funny how there are not many sources now talking about the Celtics potential moves… I guess they all went on vacation after last week… apparently rudy fernandez is out, al jefferson too (not that I had many hopes that we could get him)… yeah I definitely think Rasheed’s contract has to be the most important piece right now…

Yup. Not many whispers about potential Celtics moves now, except the Josh Howard thing. Hopefully it’s the calm before the storm.

When Sheed says he’s retiring then I’ll believe it. Until then he can always change his mind from what has been “speculated” by everyone, including his agent. My question for DA is who is going to be our lockdown defender for Kobe & LBJ? Defense wins championships, not offense. And whoever it is better be at least 6’6″ even though TA did well at a shorter height. Not re-signing TA is looking worse every new day. Go Cs…

Ainge and Doc have both said Sheed is almost definitely retiring. I think Danny’s got something up his sleeve, but if Sheed doesn’t retire the C’s wings are going to be mighty thin.

The defense that the celtics play are set by their centers anchoring the back end, and kg and baby davis having the abilty to lock up PF and big SF on perimeter—-with rondo on the perimeter—add nate pressure DEf, and Bradley (regarded as the best defenser in draft)—

sure u want a true wing defender, but at the end of the day we held the lakersto under 95 points in 3 of four losses—-we didnt have enough offense—and Tony and Rondo were the problem with inabilty to make shots—tony is almost 30, injuries, no shotttt—-we can upgradeee

Marvin williams for sheed contract, and bring in wilkins for vet minimum

more about length then height, wilkins would be an upgrade over Tony—7″0 wingspan—can hit shots, and can lock down, and has been much healthier then TA

Wilkins would not be an upgrade over Tony in very many areas at all, besides basketball IQ.

hittn any shot outside 6 ft—is a huge uprage when compared to Tonys jumper—he is also one of those guy everytime he dribbles im worried he is goin to do something crazy—i will not loose sleep over Tony even though i love the way he defends—-way 2 one dimensional

I like Nate, and I’ll be glad to have him back.

With all the talk about his defense and his spotty decision making, he really proved the doubters wrong.

His defense was stingy, in your face, full court, he learned Boston’s system. His height is a problem, and allows oppositions to get shots off, whether or not he’s in the right spot. But for the most part, he’s been solid.

He learned to make smarter decisions, take better shots, and had some GREAT games for us in the playoffs. I’ll be glad to see him in a Cs uniform again.

The problem I see, is what’s done with Bradley now? He can’t play SG with Nate on the floor… can he? I mean I know the guys got a pretty long wingspan, and is a natural defender, he should, hypothetically be able to guard bigger players at the 2, but I dunno, I have my doubts on that one.

Yup. Which is exactly what I said when Bradley was signed — where does he fit? Doc already said he probably won’t be able to play with Rondo. Good thing Damion James (my choice to get drafted by the C’s) looked horrible in Summer League… wait, he didn’t? He was great? (Slamming head against the wall.)

Bill Walker looked great in Summer league too, what happened with him in Boston?

Bottom line was I don’t see Damion James being the SF answer for the team next year either. Maybe years down the road, but I think Bradley has a much higher upside. If I’m going to look at two players, neither who have much chance for immediate impact, I’ll take the one with the bigger upside, and Bradley was definitely that guy.

Pick for the future, whether in trade, or as a backup to Rondo. It was still the smarter move.

Also, I said I had doubts he could play the 2, I don’t think it’s impossible. Don’t underestimate the natural ability the kid has to defend, and not all SGs out there are Wade/Kobes, there are a lot of teams that play smaller 2s in the 6’3-6’5 range, who don’t have post games, and Bradley can definitely cover.

Either way, Doc probably doesn’t play either of them first year. Doc hates rooks.

Doc hates rookies who can’t play defense. Which sadly, has been every rookie he’s coached in Boston, not named Rajon Rondo.

Remember, Rondo played behind Sebastian Telfair during his rookie season. Doc despises rookies of all colors, shapes and sizes.

hell play wit nate at the 2—-

Tony allen is a very good defender but lets be honest the celtics system with thier defensive talented bigs and rondo at the 1 make a lot of wings look like they are great defenders—-

Tony all has no offense—wilkins can bring the defense and is a much better thrat on offense, which isnt much b/c tony allen has the worst shot i have ever seen, where is the coachn, its one thing to have a bad shot but with that shooting technique no1 would have a chance to hit a shot—ugliest form i have ever seennnnn perioddd—u cant play him with rondo or bradley

You’re talking about Wilkins like he’s an All-Star lol. Let’s remember, he’s a guy who averaged 5 points last year, shot 43% from the field and 29% from 3pt. Not exactly a dead-eye shooter.

Maybe Doc should re-think his anti-rookie playing ways and start using them so we don’t sacrifice skills that might be useful come the playoffs. The Cs showed you can get to the finals as a 4th seed and that was with injuries but playing the starters too many minutes. Cut down on PP/RA/KG minutes and let’s start developing the players we draft. Need a letter to Doc!

The C’s actually do a good job of developing players (see: Powe, Davis, Rondo, Gomes, etc.), they just don’t develop them quickly.

wilkins isnt an all-star but is a way better shooter than Tony Allen—in boston that wing defender will get open shots—your comparing guys with a defender on them (shootoing percentages) to Tony Allen who doesnt have any1 near him for 45 feet—(shooting percentages) safe to say he is the worst jump shooter at the gaurd position in the league—-wilkins doesnt have to do much to eat that—

wilkins is a good defender with long arms good athlete—i think it is an upgrade or at least even—Tony killed us on Offense last year

Wilkins isn’t an All-Star… nor can he even sniff being one. Nor is he an even decent player. Nor is he as good as Tony Allen.
