Michael Sweetney too fat to play in NBA summer league
Anyone who remembers Michael Sweetney from last season’s brief preseason run with the Celtics knows he was only a few cheeseburgers away from exploding. I guess he’s even closer to that explosion now. (Scott Schroeder, Ridiculous Upside)Things you need to know: source says Michael Sweetney weighed in at 348 pounds in Washington and thus didn’t make the trip to Vegas. Ouch.
What I want to know is, why couldn’t he play at 348 pounds? After seeing him last season, I would have thought 348 pounds is an improvement. Hell, I thought his breasts alone weighed 348 pounds last year.
Either way, Sweetney is squandering some serious God-given gifts. He has hands soft enough to hold a sleeping dove.

I saw him play in the Puerto Rican Basketball League this past season and he looked pretty good, notching a couple of double doubles in some of the playoff games….watching him face off against “Tractor” Traylor was interesting to say the least.

To All of the Basketball World. I don’t remember the last time that weight scored a basket in a basketball game.
This weight issue that is made so much of is totally unfair to Michael Sweetney. This young man has NBA skill, power and knows how to play the game of basketball.
There aren’t too many big men in the league with a power game who can also put the ball in the basket. Don’t judge this book by its cover. Anyone who wants to have a player who will contribute in the paint, pass the ball effectively and set a hell of a pick should give Mike a shot.
You are not going to put Mike on the perimeter to defend someone but he is a tough son of a gun who makes teams better and is an excellent person. H
He came in second place in MVP votitng in Puerto Rico this year which is one of the better leagues in the world. The NBA has enough 3 point shooters and not enough people who mix it up and get there hands dirty.

I don’t mean to disrespect the Puerto Rican basketball leagues, but there’s a far cry between the players Sweetney faces in Puerto Rico and the players he would be facing in the NBA. I wrote this piece about him when he played for the Celtics summer league squad: http://www.celticstown.com/2009/10/15/the-curious-case-of-michael-sweetney/ Clearly, I see the potential, skills and talent. I also believe a lot of it is squandered because he isn’t in shape. He can still dominate against the smaller, less athletic players in the Puerto Rican leagues, but to thrive in the NBA Sweetney would have to get himself into good shape.
