Matt Barnes delays his decision

Matt Barnes has delayed his free agency decision, according to his Twitter account. He said the delay is because a couple of teams got into the action at the last minute. Before whatever teams entered the discussion, Barnes was reportedly looking at the Celtics, Lakers, Heat and Mavericks.

More teams is probably bad news for the Celtics, because more teams mean more money. More money means less chance for the C’s, who can only offer the minimum. I’m getting less optimistic by the second about Barnes joining the C’s. If the Celtics strike out on Barnes after missing on Ronnie Brewer, Marquis Daniels is going to start looking mighty, mighty good.

Damn. I’m really starting to worry about the backup wings. Think Ray and Paul are up to playing 48 minutes a game next season?

People forget Marquis started out the year great last year, he really clicked with the team through Christmas. Now injuries derailed him (and the entire Celtics team) after that, and for some reason Daniels was never able to get it back.

But he is still a VERY capable swingman, who was a starter in Indiana and averaged 14 ppg. Given another year in training camp, time to get stronger, to gain his confidence, and the confidence of Doc back, and knowing the back-up 3 position is his, with no TA breathing down his neck, he could be great again.

He’s also a capable ball-handler who can play point-forward for stretches, which is always useful, especially with no true PG in the second unit (Nate improved a lot in that regard, but cannot be considered a true PG.)

I’m not against them bringing back Daniels at all. Obviously I’d prefer we grab Barnes, but it’s not a bad Plan B.

I’m trying to talk myself into Marquis right now too lol. I’m not against him, but he’s already shown he’s not a perfect fit.

I still think Danny has to be working the phones with Houston. Houston is dangerously close to that luxury line, and maybe be looking to shed a few million once the luxury situation becomes clearer.

They also have two swingmen the Celtics would be VERY interested in, with either Ariza or Battier (Battier would be my first choice, but I’ll take either one) who’s either salary just happens to match straight up with Wallace.

    Danny should be calling everyday.

If they have Ariza or Battier coming off the bench at the end of this offseason, I will personally write Danny Ainge a thank-you note.
