Pierce: I think Sheed’s retirement is still up in the air

So you're telling me there's a chance?

So Danny Ainge is trying to convince people Sheed’s retiring, Sheed’s agent won’t confirm it, Jermaine O’Neal is trying to urge Sheed to play again and Paul Pierce thinks there’s a chance Sheed could still play. (Boston Herald)

But Paul Pierce had a similar response to the ’Sheed question yesterday. In the minds of some, apparently, the big guy can still play.

“I’m not sure,” the Celtics captain said of whether he believes Wallace is actually going to retire. “I’ve texted him a couple of times. I think it’s still up in the air. I definitely think we could use him, but that’s on Rasheed.”

At first, I thought it’d be the worst thing ever if Sheed came back. If he was THAT lazy last year, what’s he gonna do with an extra year of age and beer under his belt? But the more I think about it, the more I’m kind of sold on talking Sheed out of retirement. Buy him a personal trainer, work off some of his sagginess, pray Matt Barnes signs here, re-sign Marquis Daniels or pick up a minimum wing (Antoine Wright?) and all of a sudden the Celtics have a damn good bench.

Plus, we know Sheed now. So when he fails to pass the three-point line at either end of the court we won’t blame him. We understand he doesn’t give a shit until the playoffs, so it won’t be as frustrating as it was last year. Of course, there’s the other side to this, which is basically: Any time you can write the words “We understand he doesn’t give a shit until the playoffs, so it won’t be as frustrating” about a player, it’s usually a pretty bad sign.

Truth is, Sheed is probably faking his retirement to cover up the real reason he went into the referee’s locker room after The Game I’m Still Trying to Forget — to kick some serious ass. I’m only kidding, by the way. I think.

P.S. – Ronnie Brewer is off the market. Chicago scooped him up for three years, $12.5 million. And he turned down an offer from the Celtics. He wanted the chance to start in Chicago, even though the Celtics offered him similar money.

If sheed plays like he did during the playoffs then he can coast all he wants during the season. But I think having another good buddy in JO with him might just rearrange his coasting issues and actually help motivate him all season. We could have some interesting line-ups with him on-board again; like Sheed, JO, KG, PP and Rondo. Please come back Sheed! Go Cs…

I dunno. KG is a good friend and he couldn’t do a single thing to motivate Sheed.

sheed can still play and would add depth—i have no issue with him back if we get barnes….

Im gaining confidence in Barnes, b/c if wants to go to a winning team—-take chicago out they just signed ronnie brewer—-take orlando out, (obvious reasons)—take the lakers out—(they are bringing shannon brown back) so they have blake, brown, and odom for their bench.

Leaves celtics and miami unless he chases money to a bad team which i got the feeling he doesnt want to do

Brown is more of a SG, so that doesn’t take LA out. But Barnes hasn’t traditionally gotten along so well with Kobe (ala Raja Bell) and that relationship pushed Bell to Utah, so who knows.

If he wants to play for a contender, then yes, I think Miami and Boston are there only places to look. And Boston is the better fit of those two, he’ll have a much greater role there.

But the guy has made just over 8 million in 7 years in the NBA. He’s clearly worth far more than that, and I’ll be very surprised if he doesn’t decide to cash in somewhere.

i think it does take LA out—there starting 5 plays big minutes—odom plays alot—and brown and blake will get time—barnes wouldnt get mintues comparable at all to celtics or heat

I don’t know. Pierce and Allen both play a lot of minutes too. Tony Allen only played 16.5 mpg last season. I know that’s less than it should be because he was a 12th man for a little while, but he didn’t play more than 20 when he was the primary backup.

Bell said he and Kobe actually are on good terms. I think it was a strictly monetary decision for him. I hope it isn’t for Barnes.

Wait so you’re telling me Brewer actually thinks he a starter calibur player?!

Weren’t people comparing him to a worse defender version of TA with somewhat better offensive production?

What is the league coming to where these type of guys can’t accept the role they have?

I’m serious, if the C’s want a wing who can defend at the minimum I am available for the minimum. And I can tell you I’ll do whatever they want my role to be! You want me to lock up Kobe, Lebron, Wade for 8-10 mins a night? Done!

Kobe – Clotheslined! He won’t get up so easy from mine though!
Wade – I’ll pull an Artest and pull his shorts down
Lebron – Ok…maybe someone else will have to guard Lebron.

I would be a better cost option than Brewer if he thinks he’s a starter! LOL!

It’s not too out of the question. Brewer was a starter in Utah and will have a good chance to start at shooting guard in Chicago. He’s a solid player. LOL at your post though.

I think that, if he returns, Sheed would have learned from last postseason that, although he still got it talent wise, he needs to work harder on his conditioning to avoid being limited by his aging body..

The back spasms he had to go through from the ECFs to the Finals, and his declining production and influence on the game during the course of Game 7, even though his commitment during the whole postseason can’t be put into question, have shown him he can’t let the regular season slide and flip the switch in the playoffs, not because his skills are gone, but because his body is growing older and older..

So, if we can get Sheed back, with a new mindset, and with a more limited role when Perk’ comes back at mid-season, we’d be pretty much stacked frontcourt-wise

Sheed told some reporter (I think it was David Aldridge) he was going to do MMA this summer to stay in shape. But that was before he decided to retire. But if he did MMA and dedicated himself to coming back in decent shape (doesn’t need to be in GREAT shape, anything would be an improvement) he’d be a very good addition.
