Tony Allen was tired of being overshadowed
Scenario 1: You come off the bench behind two certain Hall of Famers. You have the opportunity to win a championship. You play with the players you have come to love as brothers. You relish in the love of a fanbase that has finally embraced you. You play 20 minutes a game as a defensive stopper and transition finisher.
Scenario 2: You come off the bench behind two guys who have never made an All-Star team. You definitely don’t have an opportunity to win a championship. You play with a bunch of guys you barely know. You have to fight for the love of a new fanbase. You play an undefined amount of minutes in an undefined role.
If it was you choosing between those two options, what would you have picked? Call me crazy, but I’m guessing scenario 1.
Tony Allen thought differently. He went for door number two. He was tired of being overshadowed by stars. (ESPN)
“Ultimately, it was the way [the Grizzlies] embraced me, the way they reached out to me and let it all out,” said Allen. “They let me know I was needed. In Boston, I was kind of overshadowed by those guys — Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. Here’s a ball club that’s on the rise and a lot of guys can make names for themselves. It’s a coming out party for a lot of guys on this team.”
“I don’t mind embracing the [defensive] role, but there is more to my game; let’s not get that twisted,” said Allen. “Whatever I can do to win ballgames — if that’s just passing out Gatorades or flashing towels or giving somebody a high-five, I’m willing to do that.”
Yeah, TA, you were overshadowed by Pierce and the better Allen. They’re great players. And now you’ll be overshadowed by O.J. Mayo and Rudy Gay — two decent ones — while you fight to make the playoffs, knowing that even if you do miraculously make it to the postseason you’ll be ousted in the first round. Do you realize how dumb your decision was, Tony? Not yet, I’m sure. But at some point it’s going to come back and slap you straight across the face. You’ll be wearing your warmup suit, watching Mayo and Gay get blown out by a true contender in front of a half-full FedEx Center, and you’ll finally realize it: That situation you had in Boston wasn’t so bad after all.
And yes, Tony, we know you can do more than embrace a defensive role. You also pile up turnovers like a madman and shoot one of the brokest jump shots in the history of the universe.
Damn it, Tony. I had learned to love you, my man. I had even learned to almost trust you on the court. And I still wish you well in Memphis. I just think you done fucked up. There’s very little in the world that compares to the bond formed by loving your teammates and succeeding with them. Why you would flush that down the toilet for a similar role in Memphis, I may never understand.

It’s funny because he’ll no doubt be “overshadowed” in Memphis as well. He’s going to be (probably) the 6th or 7th man on the Grizzlies, and he’s going to be playing behind Mayo, Gay, and possibly Sam Young. All of those guys are still getting better as players, while TA is still just TA. Does he really expect to spend more time in the limelight in a city with fair weather fans, playing behind guys who have the potential to be better? PP and Ray are at the end of their respective careers, which would have led to more TA time this year, and less of his being “overshadowed”. Mayo, Young, and Gay will no doubt be better players this year compared to last, so TA is going to be in the exact same situation this year as he was last year, albeit on an average team. He might even end up getting less minutes in Memphis, because he’s not the only capable wing they have coming off the bench.

Exactly. He had the perfect situation in Boston. He was going to be the primary sub for both Paul and Ray, he was going to contend for a championship, and he loved his teammates. Now he’s gone? Bad move, Tony.

TA is delusional. He’s a role player and the Cs took care of him for 6 yrs when they could have easily dropped him after his injury like other teams do. Good luck Tony, you need it more as a person than as a player.

If he turns into Bad Tony again, he might need it more as a player.

I no longer feel bad that Tony is gone. He’s shown his real character. Which, obviously, is a person suffering from dementia.

He’s apparently as unpredictable off the court as he is on it.

And it’s not like Tony went somewhere where he could start. I just don’t get it. The Griz must have shown him some serious love and been very aggressive in pursuing him.

Yes Tony…willing to do that for a team that won’t win games.
All those things are what you did in BOS, only you did them in the playoffs against the toughest competition on earth. And you shined when you did. Then you turn around to take the same role for a bad team, that’s going nowhere, who will not play around your limitations like poor ballhandling, no jumpshot etc. and you will watch ever one of those three years slip by saying, “What was I thinking?!”
Goodbye TA, we loved you but now…you’ll get only what you deserve.
Oh and by the way Tony, we know the other parts to your game…none of which are helpful offensively whatsoever. I know you believe you can become an offensive superstar in your mind however, if it’s been 6 years and still nothing, probably not gonna change whether your behind Mayo and Gay or Pierce and Allen. Just FYI!
Later Tony! Enjoy the taste of mediocrity!

Did he really think that latching on with a team like MEM would allow him to become better?
A worse team that will offer him the same role with a worse coach and organization and a fanbase that won’t care…sounds like a winner Tony!
