In 1989, Tom Thibodeau had a sick mullet

You’ve got to admire a man who can break into the NBA coaching ranks looking like he’s ready to go shoot geese. The Bulls must be pumped, mostly because this is the only picture that could ever allow Joakim Noah to make fun of somebody’s hair.

Boston Celtics sign Von Wafer to 1-year deal

The Boston Celtics have signed Von Wafer to a one-year contract for the veteran’s minimum, according to Alex Kennedy of Hoops World.  (Hoops World)

The Boston Celtics have signed Von Wafer to a one-year contract, according to sources close to the situation. The deal will be fully guaranteed and worth the veteran’s minimum.

The Celtics had spent the past week looking for a guard to replace Tony Allen. Jarvis Hayes and Roger Mason were mentioned as options, but the team ultimately went with Wafer because of his ability to score off of the bench.

Welcome to Boston, Von Wafer

Von Wafer is a 6’5″ shooting guard who played his college basketball at Florida State. He has played four NBA seasons, his best coming in 2008 with the Houston Rockets. He averaged 9.7 ppg in 19 mpg, while shooting 39% from behind the arc. Last season, Wafer played with the Greek team Olympiacos, where he struggled to receive consistent playing time before being waived in December.

Wafer’s signing could be a sign that Rudy Fernandez  trade talks have hit a rough patch, or come to a complete halt. While not as high profile a pick up as Fernandez would be, Wafer will fill a similar role off the bench– providing three-point shooting and a scoring punch. For the veteran’s minimum this is a no-risk, high-reward signing.

Kevin Garnett switching from Adidas?

In news that you probably don’t care about one bit, Kevin Garnett is signing with the Chinese sneaker company Anta this weekend. If I’m not mistaken, the deal will end his tenure with Adidas.

I wonder what Anta’s motto is. I’d love to know what Garnett is going to scream to the heavens after the Celtics win the 2011 title.

I guess we’ll never see commercials like this one again.

Ex-Celtics coach Rick Pitino’s 15 seconds of infamy

Once a Minuteman, always a minute man.

Former Celtics head coach Rick Pitino testified Wednesday that Karen Sypher, the woman accused of extorting him, initiated the sexual encounter they had in 2003. Pitino alleges that Sypher’s intent was to use the sexual encounter as blackmail against him. Pitino also alleges that he doesn’t have much stamina. (USA Today)

Staring straight ahead and not looking at Sypher, Pitino — the married father of five — acknowledged that he made a mistake when he had a brief sexual encounter with her at Porcini restaurant after it closed the night of July 31, 2003.

He said it began when she started rubbing his leg as they were sitting at the bar, then suggested that they go to a booth. “One thing led to another,” Pitino said.

He said he got nervous after Sypher told him she was very fertile and joked that her first husband once got her pregnant just by looking at her.

“Our encounter lasted less than 15 seconds,” Pitino said.

Pitino graduated from UMass in 1974 as a Minuteman. 36 years later, he can’t even make it that long.

By the way, if some chick told me she was very fertile before I ever had sex with her I’d be out the door and running away from her faster than Pitino can say, “Umm, sorry, but I already finished.”

P.S. – Ron Jeremy’s not walking through that door.
