Shaq to Celtics is now official

Shaq looks nice and cuddly, doesn't he?

Shaq is a Celtic. It’s official. I assume it’s either a one- or two-year deal worth the veteran’s minimum. (Celtics.com)

The Boston Celtics announced today that they have signed free agent center Shaquille O’Neal. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“It is not every day that you can add a player of Shaquille’s caliber to your team,” said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations. “His past experience speaks for itself and we believe that he is a great fit for our roster.”

“I am honored to be joining the Celtics,” said O’Neal. “I have played against Paul, Ray, Kevin, Rajon, and Jermaine for many years and it will be great to be able to call them my teammates. I cannot wait to get to Boston to get started in pursuit of another championship.”

I’m telling you, in 2002 this team would have been a monster. But if it were still 2002, it would have been tough to deal with the Heat and then 43-year old Juwan Howard.

P.S. – Here are my long-winded thoughts on the matter.

P.P.S. – Shaq will wear #36. Which means I’ll definitely be rocking the three six before long.

Do you think it’s possible that the Celtics, in order to lure him in, promised to re-sign him after this year to more money because of non-bird rights? I still find it hard to believe that he settled for the vets minimum just because he had a chance to win a ring. Either way one of my all-time favorites (even when he was with the Lakers) is now on my team and for nostalgic value I can’t be any happier.

Only 13 Players can be ACTIVE (meaning they can play in a game). You can have another 2 inactive.
