Is Harangody close to signing with the Celtics?

La-La-La-La-La-Luke.

Yesterday, A. Sherrod Blakely tweeted that Luke Harangody’s agent believed Harangody would sign a contract with the Celtics sometime this week: “Talked with Harangody’s agent. Said he and Danny A. should get something done next week. Danny’s plate has been pretty full lately.”

Blakely then went ahead and wrote a piece that discussed whether the C’s would ACTUALLY sign Buzz from Home Alone. In it, he discussed the problems with a potential signing. (CSNNE)

With the additions that Boston has made to its frontcourt this summer coupled with the guys returning, Harangody won’t play much this season.

And that creates a bit of a conundrum of sorts for Boston.

If you’re the Celtics, do you give that final guaranteed roster slot to a player who deserves it but probably won’t see much action as a rookie, or do you instead try and add a player like Larry Hughes, who has the potential to crack your regular playing rotation?

First of all, with regards to Hughes, I just want to say one thing. NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!!!!!!

Secondly, Blakely forgot to mention that the Celtics still have the option to sign ‘Gody and trade Sheed’s contract, upgrading their backup wing situation and retaining their newest, whitest member all at the same time. But even that scenario brings up a problem. Even if the Celtics trade Sheed’s contract before the season, which I’m almost positive they will, a Harangody signing (if he’s given a fully-guaranteed contract) means they will have no roster flexibility moving forward. They will have 15 guaranteed players, which, short of waiving someone like Shaq or Harangody, will keep the Celtics from signing someone off waivers near the end of the season. Alas, that may not be such a bad thing. Because yeah, P.J. Brown was instrumental to the 2008 title, but Sam Cassell, Mikki Moore and Michael Finley weren’t exactly front-runners for the All-Star team. But the Celtics like to add guys late in the season, and signing Harangody would keep them from doing that. (Unless he was later cut, a la Lester Hudson. Nobody said this whole roster talk thing was simple.)

Still, late-season waiver wire be damned, I’m all for signing Harangody. But if the Celtics have a chance to add someone to the roster who can help this season, they’ve got to do it. Because even in my wildest dreams I don’t see Harangody having any type of role this year. And I don’t know about you, but I’m a “win titles now, ask questions later” type of guy.

It’d be disappointing to see ‘Gody go, he seems like a great kid. I’m all for signing him, but I guess if we have a chance to add someone who will contribute on a regular basis we should, simple as that.

Then again, watching Luke in the summer league draining all those threes and turn arounds was great, but held no signifigance at the time. Now, however, that we’ve signed Shaq, wouldn’t it make more sense to throw ‘Gody out with The Big Shamrock then it would to send him(Shaq) out with Baby? Luke, although unproven in the league, would most likely get a TON of opportunities to throw it up from deep when Shaq has the double team in the post. People have been talking about how Shaq and Baby won’t fit together, so here’s a solution: Try Shaq and Harangody together early in the year in games considered relativly “unimportant”. If it works out consistently, you can use Baby in a different situation, or even throw him in with Sheed’s contract in an attempt to get another solid winger.

Sign him. We need to develop some young talent or Rondo & Perk will have nothing to work with come 2012. This kid can play and even if his minutes are limited the players he’ll be going against in practice are all All-stars or former All-stars and how valuable will that be to his education and development. Absolutely plenty! Go Cs…

I think DA is in a win now scenario and as much as I would like them to keep gody, he won’t get the playing time.
Sooo, trade machine says that a trade of Sheed and Baby for Dunleavy is viable. He is in the last year of contract, 6′ 9″, 84% Ft, consistent 3Pt shooter and would be a solid role player behind PP.
I think we are going to struggle with Baby and Shaq in the fold and although I love Baby, he is pretty much all the trade bait we have.
There is not a lot left out there, nor teams willing to help us to banner 18 and we need to use Sheed’s contract!
    What do you think?

JO can backup PF who I think will run with the second unit this year as I can’t see Shaq with a quicker unit.
Hey, you asked who we could use Sheed’s contract for and I don’t think houston are going to give up Battier.
He fits DA’s MO and he is a quality role player we need.

Yeah, Battier would be perfect. I just don’t think they’ll give him up.

I think we need to sign Gody. Unless there is no chance to move Sheed then I think you do it, because he has the tools to become a bench guy in the NBA.

He’ll never be a starter or anything but by god if Luke Walton and Sasha Vujabich can get payed $5 mil a year to play 5 mins in the NBA then Luke Harangoddy deserves a minimum deal from the C’s.

Trade Sheed for a wing (Is Nocioni available?), then sign Goddy and be done with it.

If anyone is a problem like Erden or VW then they can be waived for a late season addition. Even Goddy could be waived if they REALLY need someone.

I don’t love throwing in Davis for Dunleavy. For one year, I’m not down.

If it’s Granger then yeah do it but to me Davis is not an option unless you’re getting a guy who will be there for the future.
