Is Rasheed Wallace retiring? (Gulp) Maybe not

Say it ain't so.
Wouldn’t you know it? A day after my post titled “Sheed is definitely retiring?”, Sheed is no longer definitely retiring. Never say never, I guess. (CSNNE)
Boston Celtic fans might have to put those retirement party balloons for Rasheed Wallace on hold.
The newest Celtic, Shaquille O’Neal, said Wallace may in fact return to the C’s this season. [...]
“I know Rasheed is thinking about coming back,” said O’Neal, who was in attendance at a charity basketball game in Orlando, Fla. “Rasheed, go on and come back for one or two more years.”
Rasheed in his prime, or even “Rasheed with a slight ability to move his feet laterally,” would have been PERFECT for the 2010-2011 Celtics. He could have played both power forward and center, allowed the Celtics to play some absolutely monstrous lineups, and given Boston the most versatile lineup in the league.
Sadly, “Rasheed in his prime” is long gone and “Rasheed with a slight ability to move his feet laterally” will probably never return… even if Sheed himself does. And that makes adding Rasheed redundant and unnecessary. The C’s already have three centers, none of whom can defend power forwards. (Note: I don’t think. Jermaine O’Neal could potentially prove me wrong. In his former life, he was a power forward.) Rasheed coming back would only serve to take away some minutes from another over-the-hill center (likely adding at least one more disgruntled backup to the squad) and take away Boston’s best trade bait. Doesn’t sound like the best deal to me.
But let’s say Sheed does come back. The Celtics would have to A) tell Luke Harangody “thanks but no thanks,” B) use Harangody’s roster spot to sign another wing and add security for Marquis Daniels and Von Wafer (the pickings are very slim — Jarvis Hayes anyone?), C) hire Sheed a personal cook, D) hire Sheed a personal trainer, E) stop feeding Sheed beers in the locker room and F) force Sheed to run three miles on a treadmill every day, on top of what his personal trainer would make him do. Sheed’s biggest problem last season wasn’t that he was old. It’s that he was a lazy, out-of-shape, lumpy man who didn’t give a rat’s ass about the regular season. If came back and somehow, miraculously returned to camp in good shape, all of a sudden he could play the four and every problem with adding Sheed would be alleviated.
But I think I’ve got an even better idea than all that: Maybe Shaq should just keep his mouth shut and stop telling Rasheed to “go on and come back.” Not even offseason blackout goggles can make me believe a frontcourt of Perk, the O’Neal brothers and Sheed could somehow work out.

I’ve just had a vision of a reality show in the C’s locker room, starring KG, Sheed, Shaq, Nate and Baby.. too bas TA’s gone..
I believe Sheed was pretty good at defending on Gasol and Howard though, this can’t be threw away imo

That would be one hell of a show. And you’re right about Sheed. He was great defending those guys, at least in the playoffs.

sheed defended pau possibly the best i’ve seen in the league this year, esp the finals, but he is too old and slow to do another else but post up on offense (which he is good at, but his body will only let him do it a few times a game).
i doubt he is coming back, doc is the guy who really knows and he has never even hinted that sheed is coming back. i dont think he would be stupid enough to ring chase and mess up an entire teams roster in the process. maybe retire, the retire and get signed at the mid-season deadline on a tiny contract if we have the roster space just to put us over the top in the playoffs. but i can live without that! i loved sheed in the finals but he knows he doesn’t have it in him anymore.

Yeah, if he gets bought out the Celtics could sign him at midseason for the stretch run. I could deal with that, but it would likely mean he’d be superbly out of shape when he got back.

Who’s the expert saying Sheed doesn’t have it anymore? Maybe he’s getting his back issues resolved and if so, and with Shaq/JO/Perk all in the picture he can come back and do what he does best; play solid defense and shoot lights out from the wings/baseline 12-18 ft area. But as I have been saying, when I hear Sheed say what his plans are then and only then will I celebrate or be disappointed. I’m hoping to celebrate. Go Cs…

I feel like the back issues were only because he’s out of shape. Get Sheed back into shape and he’s worth it because he could play the four. But if he’s not in shape? I’ll pass.

A Month and half ago if we Had Sheed,Perk and the two O’Neils we would be hanging banner number 18 on Oct.26th…It solves the length problem against LA and causes problems for the Heat and Magic..Sheed won’t mind limited minutes…He can make em count…size matters!! I know they’re old, so it makes sense to have 3 old centers splitting minutes rather than two old centers..They get less minutes. They wont complain, it’s BOSTON!!

Size definitely matters, but it only works if the size you’ve got can defend. I don’t know if those guys could.

yo jay
cant the celtics still trade sheed even if he decides to come back?
maybe jr smith, igoudala, prince, caron butler, or anyone else who can play the small forward position for sheeds contract and maybe big baby too

They COULD… but he still has two years left on his contract. Nobody’s trading anything good for $12 million worth of Sheed.

I would have been down with this if we knew the story BEFORE getting Erden to come over here. If we left him in Greece and had what we will further refer to as “In Shape Sheed”, then you have an amazing lineup. Perk, JO and Shaq at Center and KG, Sheed, and BBD at PF would obliterate anyone in the league, but we are hamstrung by Danny getting Erden too early. If we had waited, we wouldn’t have this problem. We’d only have 13 guys committed and Sheed could come back, we could sign Harangoddy AND go get another wing like Delonte or Hayes. That would be ideal! But now we have too much logjam…unless we waive Erden.
