“Rasheed is retiring,” says his agent

I don't know why, but Glen Davis's eyes creeping behind Sheed was funny to me.
You can put all that “Sheed is coming back” talk to rest. For now, at least. This whole Sheed retirement thing is kind of starting to resemble the annual Brett Favre saga, only on a “slightly” lesser scale. (Boston Globe)
The Celtics made roster moves this summer believing that Rasheed Wallace was going to retire, despite constant speculation that he was reconsidering. Team president Danny Ainge appeared convinced Wallace was done.
Yesterday, Wallace’s agent, Bill Strickland, said that his NBA career is indeed over, ending a tumultuous 15-year run.
Strickland simply stated, “Rasheed is retiring.’’
Now we can all get back to plotting a plan to flip Sheed’s retiring contract into Shane Battier. My best idea so far involves some ice cubes and a nine iron, a buffalo (live or stuffed, preferably stuffed for safety’s sake), Houston GM Daryl Morey and roofies. But mostly Daryl Morey and roofies.

this is the one!
we get battier, the rockets get tayshaun prince (so they dont think theyre getting rid of shane battier for nothing and can still go deep into the playoffs) and the pistons get sheeds retiring contract (all they really want is cap space) and filler which i think could be on non guaranteed contracts. we can include lafayette and gaffney if anyone wants them as well they both dont effect the trade.
i think this trade actually suits everyone. the rockets have publicly said they dont care about being over the cap for this year, so they remain around the same place, the pistons save a tonne (tayshauns 11 mil and sheeds 7 mil and any luxury tax if they were above it) and we get our superdefender battier.
this needs to happen!

That’s the best Battier offer I’ve seen yet. But the Rockets basically would be trading Battier straight up for Prince. With Prince’s injury problems, do they do that?

and we get mike harris who actually isnt a bad player and won d league mvp last year. probably worth more of a gamble on than lafayette or gaffney and he gives us more depth at our thin wing position…

i’m not too tuned into whats up with prince, is he that much of a liability? last year was the only year he’s played less than 82 games (bar rookie season) so hopefully its a one off. i think he’s quite a good fit for the rockets too (is more of a 3/4 than a swingman so adds depth to them in that department too rather than the traditional wing which the rockets have tonnes of at the moment). i obviously have hugely rose tinted glasses on for this, but it does seem to fit every teams needs. prince is a proven competitor with huge experience and isn’t downward trending anywhere near as consistently across the board as battier is.
if the rockets are really in a one and done frame of mind this might actually be a good move for them. they could also dump another small-ish contract like jordan hill if they got a bit worried about the extra luxury tax they would incur.

I’d take Battier over Prince anyway. So why Houston would flip one expiring deal, for another expiring deal and a worse player, I have no idea.

is prince a worse player for the rockets though?
hes a capable defender and can fill the 3 and 4 (where they only really have scola) spots opposed to just the 2 and 3 where they’re overly deep and battier is struggling for minutes now with ariza martin and buddinger. i dont think its a bad move for the rockets, it could even make them better, i think its more about if they are willing to part with battier for sentimental reasons and if they are willing to pay a bit more luxury tax for prince (which i suppose could be cancelled somewhat if detriot or us include money with the deal)

all this battier crap is getting me sick- the rockets gm said THEY DON’T WANT TO TRADE HIM lets get realistic and talk about Prince and Beasley and other players that are on the trading block!

Amen. Houston is not going to trade SB so get over it. Although there’s not much left out there worthwhile. Go Cs…

What if, say, a team like Miami tries to recruit Sheed mid-season? – similar to what we did with PJ Brown in ’08.
What possible scenarios are there if we: bought out Sheed, kept his contract, traded his contract, etc…?
