Celtics made offer for Fernandez before he decided he wants to return to Europe

Before Rudy Fernandez informed his agent Andy Miller “that he is prepared to be suspended by the Blazers and forfeit the final two years of his contract in order to return to Europe and play in his homeland of Spain in 2012,” the Celtics made an offer for the soon-to-be third-year wing. (The Oregonian)

Miller said new Blazers general manager Rich Cho has “overreached” in his attempt to trade Fernandez, turning down offers from Chicago, New York and Boston, leaving Miller and Fernandez with no option other than to hold firm that the former first-round pick will not report.

“All I can do now is stand on the roof top and scream ‘He’s not coming!’,” Miller said. “He’s just not coming back … I’ve made that clear.”

Cho said he has made offers, counteroffers and talked about package deals with teams, but has yet to find a scenario that makes sense for the Blazers.

“I’m not going to be pressured into making a deal,” Cho said. “I’m not going to make a trade just to make a trade. It has to be the right deal for the team.”

I don’t know about you, but this all sounds like posturing to me. If Rudy really wanted to return to Europe and never play in the NBA again, he never would have asked for a trade in the first place. Am I wrong? I wouldn’t be surprised if this is all a part of Miller’s plan to force Portland into a trade. After all, Cho has gone on record to say that the Blazers will not release Rudy and allow him to return to Europe. They “value him as an asset” too much.

Anyway, Miller then continued to make Fernandez sound like an asshole. “”He’s not going to want to practice, he’s not going to want to be around his teammates,” Miller said. “I mean, if they thought he was difficult when he was contributing, imagine how difficult he will be when he is not.”

(Video of Fernandez’s exit interview with Portland. We get it, bro. You’ve got a contract. But that’s not stopping you anymore, is it?)

He’s no longer a “valued asset” if he sits out the last two years of his contract on the suspended list.

But it sounds to me like that this point Cho won’t trade him just for the principle of it. He’d rather see him play nowhere than be forced to trade him for nothing.

If he really does sit out on the suspended list, I suppose Cho would finally release him. It makes no sense to keep such a disgruntled player around.
