Rajon Rondo cut from Team USA

Rajon Rondo has “withdrawn” from Team USA, finalizing the 12-man roster that will travel to Turkey for the World Championships.

“Rajon came to us and said he was going to withdraw from the team,” said team director Jerry Colangelo,”that he had some family matters to attend to and some things to take care of before the NBA season. He did an outstanding job during our training, we appreciate the effort and commitment he made to our program and he completely has our support.”

Rondo travelled to Athens, Greece with the team for the last exhibition game before the World Championships begin on August 28th in Istanbul, Turkey. In an interview this morning on ESPN.com, Rondo admitted he was on the bubble, but made no mention of his family committments, or his plans to withdraw from the team.

“It’s what’s best for the country,” Rondo told Chris Sheridan of ESPN.com. “It’s part of it. We knew coming in it was still tryouts until we make the team that goes to Turkey.”

Rondo had started each exhibition game before playing poorly against Lithuania. Rondo did not play in USA’s win Sunday against Spain.

So why would Rondo tavel with the team to Greece, if he planned on withdrawing from the team? Why would he talk about being on the bubble in his interview with ESPN.com–without mentioning his plans to withdraw? I think you’d have to ask Colangelo. It all sounds like a bunch of bullshit to me. Rondo got cut. Say it like is Colangelo, you’re not sparing anybody’s feelings.

The final 12-man roster for Team USA:  Chauncey Billups (Denver Nuggets); Tyson Chandler (Dallas Mavericks); Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors); Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder); Rudy Gay (Memphis Grizzlies); Eric Gordon (Los Angeles Clippers); Danny Granger (Indiana Pacers); Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers); Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves); Lamar Odom (Los Angeles Lakers); Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls); and Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder.

I’m so pissed and NO ONE around me right now cares, damn it!! How big of them to allow him to leave on his own accord when no one asked them to! Rondo is capable of handling the truth, idiots. So much for getting some Celtic basketball early, now I’m left jonesing until October! Feeling a little better, thanks for the vent and article Jay. Can you give your thoughts on the coaches picks for Team USA?

Uh guys relax, seriously. Rondo played awful against Lith, and if he says he’s got family stuff, I believe him. Maybe he’s been distracted and it’s hurting his performance, maybe not, and we have absolutely 0 evidence to not believe this was Rondo’s choice and he wasn’t “cut”.

Good side of things is he won’t come back exhausted or injured from Turkey, and he’ll have some time to work on his free throws and jump shot…

However, we don’t know how getting cut will affect him (let’s hope he just got cut and that all is well as far as his family is concerned)

Rondo you got cut……. So now do you want coachK to regret that durning the regular season??? So practice your free throws take 500-1000 free throws a day record them before training camp find out what’s your%…. Practice some of your out shots maybe have a friend play good defence on you… .. Maybe Durning trainging camp callange Ray Allen for 50 free throws and see who’s better…. Well do that and spend some time with your family……. Yeah I know he not going to read this…. But the 0.09% he is, do that be bettter when the season start, try to make coachK regret it durning the season just like you did to Phoenix…. Well now I don’t haveto watch the FIBA :D ….. Forget Gold, that’s get the 24k gold 14pound Torphy that the NBA gives out in the fanial and you go get MVP of the season award if you want to shoove it around coachK, yah Iknow that rondo Withdrawl butmaybe because of 2 resoans Family Problems and don’t want to hear the words “Sorry, you gotcut, sorry” from Colangelo…

Yup. It’s redemption time. I hope he wrote down the name of every player that made the team and whispers it to himself as he puts up an extra rep in the weight room.

I don’t think he should of got cut for his play with Lithuania. Derrick Rose had a awful game against them as well and didn’t perform well at all up until the Spain game (which Rondo didn’t get a chance to play even). And quite frankly, the Spain game was very guard friendly (lots of space, transition, isolation and no zone). Rondo would of excelled in that Spain game. And he didn’t even get to play.

Somethings up! Oh well Rondo. Now you know which guards to embarrass during the regular season or playoffs.

I’m with you. Rose was just as bad as Rondo in that game. I didn’t get the DNP at all, and now I don’t get this cut/withdrawal thing either.
