Celtics Summer Forecast: What to expect from Marquis Daniels

Today’s question for the Celtics Summer Forecast on ESPN Boston: What can the Celtics expect from Marquis Daniels?
After an up and (mostly) down season, Marquis Daniels is back for a second season with the Boston Celtics. The signing was an example of mutual need: the Celtics needed a backup small forward, and Daniels needed a chance to prove to NBA executives that last season was abberation.
Most of the Celtics bloggers predicted that Daniels would improve on last season’s letdown and produce a better overall season. Jay wrote:
Jay King, Celtics Town (8 points, 3 rebounds, 18 minutes)
For better or worse, Daniel is the first wing off the bench. I’m not sure yet whether that’s good or bad; he is a tough dude to read. There’s no way around it, he was bad last season. Really bad. But it’s a new year and I’m willing to give him a clean slate. I expect more from him than last year. I just don’t want to get my hopes up because the prevailing image of his 2009-2010 season is of him rotting away on the bench (or him getting concussed by Dwight Howard). Predicted averages: 18 minutes, 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists.

I’m guessing an average of: 9 ppg 4 ast 2 rpg and maybe .5 steals.
I see him getting more minutes this year and being much more settled in his role. He will be D first but a nice scoring punch off the bench with slashing and midrange J while Nate and VW spread the floor. Throw Davis’ rebounding and jumpshot ability into the mix while adding the destruction that Shaq will wreak upon 2nd string Centers…you’ve got your self a nice versatile bench with some serious scoring ability!

I had similar averages for Quisy, and for similar reasons. With TA gone, and Nate resigning, ‘Quis has a defined role this year. He won’t have to play any point guard, and he’ll be the backup three, whether Doc trusts him or not. Doc has no other choice but to play Quis this season. That stability will be very beneficial for Daniels, boosting his confidence and his overall production. Daniels is a good defender, though I’m not sold he’s strong enough to tangle with the likes of LeBron, Carmelo, Igoudala, but then again, not many SF’s are.

I agree with that. My question is still the size and strength factor. The fact is Quis CAN play SF but he ISN’T a SF. That’s where my petition to sign Jarvis Hayes comes from. He would have the size, and he’s a guy that I wouldn’t care about burrying at the end of the bench if he didn’t work out.
With Hayes, at least you’d have a sizeable guy to throw at the bigger SF’s like Lebron, Carmelo, Durant because those guys get PP into foul trouble a lot now because he’s lost a step.
Quis is a good defender but I still worry about the size. Although that game against CLE last year when PP was out and Quis had the flu, he played AWESOME the first half! I think Lebron only had like 10 pts at the half!
