Glen Davis: I’m immensely better than I used to be

Big Swoll Baby doing work.

Glen Davis complained about his role before practices even started. Since that not-so-rare display of immaturity, Big Swoll Baby has actually thrived in the same role he worried about, producing more through three preseason games than any of his more glamorous teammates.

So Glen, are you better now than you used to be? (NESN)

“Way better,” Davis said Monday. “Immensely better. I feel like I’m a whole different player now than I used to be. When I first got here, at the beginning of my career, I was in a different realm as far as team, role. You don’t want to be in just one role — you want to be a more versatile player.”

You don’t want to be in just one role, Glen? Weren’t you frustrated just two weeks ago because you didn’t have just one role? Oh, well. I’m not even going to try to get into that.

Versatile Davis is. He gets upset by his ever-evolving role, but the fact that he can chameleon his way into many capacities helps the Celtics immensely. He’s been the pick-and-pop guy, and he’s banged down low. He can swish a 17-footer on one possession and drill a jump hook the next. He can play alongside centers or power forwards, and he can defend anybody from Rashard Lewis to Dwight Howard. Off the bench, that type of versatility can be a dangerous weapon.

“I’m going into my fourth year,” Davis said. “You go into your rookie year, and you have no clue what you’re doing. You go into your second year, you have a little bit of an understanding of what you’re doing. You go into your third year, and you kind of know what you’re doing.

“But you go into your fourth year, and you know what you’re doing.” …

“I’ve grown tremendously with the help of Doc, and being around a lot of veterans,” Davis said. “I’ve come to understand the game more.”

Way better. Immensely better. Versatile. Understands the game more. Is Big Baby growing up a little?

On the court, at the very least.

This is a bad sign. Big baby needs to be the best role player he can be. He does a good job on the post and makes good plays but he shouldn’t get any more touches than the big three. He wants to be a “versatile player”? He needs to stop with the bs buzzwords and be the same crucial role player he’s always been.

I don’t think it’s a bad sign that he’s versatile. That’s the trait that allows him to change roles for the Celtics. He’s looked great in the two games so far.

His versatility is his role Evan. How could that be a bad thing?

If teams are weak in the post, he’ll post up, and they have trouble guarding the screen and roll, he’ll pick and pop. Especially playing against second units, he can hurts teams in a lot of different ways, and he’s very good defensively (an underrated part of his game, he hedges and recovers with the best of them.)

I don’t understand how this is not a good sign. Unless of course we’re talking about him pricing himself out of the team next year; which of course is a very real possibility.

Yeah, I’m sure he’s ready for a pay day too. He thought he was going to get a lot bigger deal last time he hit free agency (when he was coming off the playoffs when he averaged 15 and 6). Big Baby may not be around next year.
