Morning Walkthrough: Perk might not be the same for a long time

The Morning Walkthrough is a set of links to Boston Celtics articles throughout the internet, designed to get your day started the right way.

Peter May, ESPN Boston – “Monday was the four-month anniversary of the procedure, which was performed by Celtics team physician Dr. Brian McKeon. Perkins walks without a brace, can do shooting drills and, to the untrained eye, looks like he could step in at starting center Wednesday night against the Wizards. ‘He is looking great,’ McKeon said. ‘He’s keeping his weight down. He’s sticking to the proper diet. But it was a major surgery, and I always tell athletes that it could be 18 months before it’s the best that it can be.’”

Michael Lee, Washington Post – “The protective walking boot that John Wall wore as he left the United Center two days ago was upgraded to crutches on Monday, as the rookie was held out of practice while recovering from a sprained left foot. Wall visited with a doctor while Gilbert Arenas shared the backcourt with starter Kirk Hinrich in drills during practice. Wall was injured in the third quarter of the Wizards’ 103-96 loss to Chicago on Saturday but he returned to contribute to a rally in the fourth quarter. While Wall’s availability for Tuesday’s game against Toronto appears unlikely, Coach Flip Saunders didn’t rule him out, listing him as a game-time decision.” (Editor’s note: The Celtics play Wall’s Wizards on Wednesday.)

Paul Flannery, WEEI – “For all the talk about how deep the Celtics are, the reality is that Rivers is playing with an eight-man rotation and only two of those bench players have had positive contributions so far this season. Glen Davis has been fantastic, a legitimate sixth man and a game-changer off the bench who finishes games, while Marquis Daniels has been solid, doing a little bit of everything. But after that, things are unsteady. Robinson has struggled, but he shot the ball well on the road trip and the Celtics are anxious to see him and West together. Semih Erden has shown flashes in limited minutes but he still has a long way to go. Without Jermaine O’Neal and Kendrick Perkins, and with Shaquille O’Neal and Erden battling through various ailments, the Celtics are thin up front and it’s not likely to get better soon. Jermaine O’Neal may be out a couple of weeks, or it may be out longer. No one is really sure right now how bad his knee injury really is. ‘Semih and Shaq are playing through whatever they’re playing through,’ Rivers said. ‘Semih’s shoulder and Shaq’s everything, really. It’s a concern but there’s nothing we can do about it. We’re not going to go out and get anyone else. There are not a lot of really good 7-footers walking the earth that are not signed in the NBA, so we just have to make do.’ The Celtics have made out just fine through the first 10 games. They have proven, again, that their starting five is good enough to beat anyone in the league consistently. If they are going to maintain that level, however, the bench is going to need to be a bigger factor.”

Peter May, ESPN Boston – “Delonte West will make his season debut on Wednesday against Washington after having missed the first 10 games of the season due to a suspension. ‘He’ll play. I’m not sure how much,’ coach Doc Rivers said. ‘We’ve still got to get all our stuff down so we may limit what we do when he’s out there.’ West was the last player off the practice floor Monday, taking extra shooting practice with assistant coach Lawrence Frank. ‘It feels good [to have the suspension done],” said West. “Who knows where we go from here? I have to still earn my playing time. This is a talented team; guys that want to be out there, earn the right to be out there. So it starts here[on the practice court], just getting in here, showing the guys I’m committed to this, and hopefully they trust me enough to have me out there.’”

Dan Duggan, Boston Herald – “‘I’m just ready to go and help this team out the best way I can,’ West said. ‘If it’s Wednesday night or not, it doesn’t matter. I’m just happy to have this suspension behind me, and if my number is called, I’ve prepared myself to go out there and try to help out the best I can.’ West certainly has prepared. The basketball court has been his respite. He has spent most of his time there during the ban. ‘It starts here,’ West said after his workout. ‘I’m showing up every day, showing the guys that I’m committed to this and hopefully they can trust me enough to have me out there.’”

Gary Washburn, Boston Globe – “O’Neal’s agent, Bob Myers, said the next step will be at least an evaluation from noted orthopaedic surgeon Dr. David Altchek, the team physician of the New York Mets and medical consultant for the NBA. Images of O’Neal’s knee will be sent to Altchek and the center could also visit the doctor in New York. ‘I think at this point, he’s going through a couple of evaluations and we’re collecting information right now and it’s to be determined,’ Myers said Monday. ‘The issue is more him listening to his body.’ When asked if the injury is serious, Myers said. ‘Not at this point. Nobody is using that term.’ ‘I will go along with what Doc said,’ Myers said. “We are at the point where we’re gathering information and figuring out a game plan.’”

Frank Dell’Apa, Boston Globe – “West’s workout partner was rookie guard Avery Bradley, who is expected to return from an ankle injury this week. ‘Avery’s a talented young man, he’s big and strong for a guard,’ West said. ‘He’s physical, athletic, and the biggest thing is he has heart, he plays defense. Unfortunately, we have one of those teams where we have a long pecking order for opportunity. Given the right opportunity on a team where he can go out there and play 40 minutes like some rookies do, he’d be showing you his talents. I think it’s good to get an opportunity to learn from these guys we have here.’”

Dan Duggan, Boston Herald – “The C’s already are without starting center Kendrick Perkins (torn ACL) until at least January. The loss of O’Neal puts even more of the burden on Shaquille O’Neal and Semih Erden, who both are dealing with their own injuries. ‘I worry about it because Semih and Shaq are playing through whatever they’re playing through,’ Rivers said. ‘Semih’s shoulder and Shaq’s everything, really. It’s a concern, but there’s nothing we can do about it.’”
