Tom Thibodeau’s new defense does the trick, Bulls down Celtics 90-79
Very few teams can make these Boston Celtics look so disorganized, so disheveled, so entirely unaware of what they’re attempting to accomplish. With a tip of the cap, I salute former Celtics defensive coordinator Tom Thibodeau, and his troops, who proved willing to follow their peerless leader’s advice all night long. These Bulls receive top-notch education at the dirty end of the court, and tonight they deserve an awful lot of credit for making these Celtics look so abominably disjointed. The Bulls earned their 90-79 win.
But while taking away nothing from Chicago’s beyond-worthy effort, let’s not let these Celtics off the hook. Against a defense like Chicago’s, ball movement and player movement initiate success. Yet the Celtics were uncharacteristically unable to find the open man with any consistency, and also unable to shed the stagnancy that plagued an ugly offensive night. If you want to know why Ray Allen and Paul Pierce seemed curiously uninvolved, the woeful ball movement’s your answer. The Celtics didn’t bring their normal energy. I suspect the cause was a combination of Kevin Garnett’s absence, the natural effect of a back-to-back’s second night, and the simple yet thorough bullying session pieced together by a physical, tough Chicago squad.
From an individual standpoint, I saw little that I enjoyed. Perhaps the most striking realization came from Shaq. Looking across the court at a frontcourt of Kurt Thomas (6’9 and flabby) and Carlos Boozer (not so flabby, but also only 6’9 and pointedly less defensively inclined), Shaq should have smelled mismatches. He should have feasted like Michael Sweetney on Thanksgiving, posting and toasting and roasting in a way that would have brought Walt “Clyde” Frazier immense pride.
Instead, Shaq offered what he’s recently become far too likely to offer — a dud. Five points, four rebounds, and very little impact on the game. If you expected Shaq to successfully exploit mismatches, think again. He’s officially a complementary player, and nothing more. He can thrive when finishing his teammates’ plays, but that’s it. Even against defenders far smaller than he, Shaq no longer possesses the requisite balance or the lift to take advantage of his extra five inches of height. I suppose I should have known that before. I guess I even DID know that. But this was Kurt Thomas we’re talking about! He’s short, and flabby, and he’s got (in the memorable words of Sonny Koufax) old balls! I know Thomas has established a stellar defensive reputation throughout his career, but Shaq (in my dreams) still should have manufactured a big night. Or, at least, better than five points and four rebounds. Alas, my hopes of Shaq exploting mismatches are now permanently shattered. With a 38-year old Shaq, there’s no such thing as a mismatch.
Haters will point to Derrick Rose’s free throw tally and shout conspiracy. Realists will look to his free throw tally and realize, “Damn, Rose was THAT difficult to defend.” For a long time, we’ve heard analysts say Rose needs to draw more fouls. With his cheetah-like package of speed, quickness and power, there’s no reason Rose shouldn’t average as many free throw attempts as anyone else.
Tonight, we might have seen the latest step in Rose’s evolution. He didn’t just draw contact; he invited it. He didn’t just pick up fouls shots; he actively sought them. If the Derrick Rose we saw tonight — the scary, miniaturized freight train intent on accumulating charity shots — becomes the Rose who plays every night, the NBA’s Eastern Conference may soon have another legitimate contender. And please, try diminishing his output by telling me he only notched two assists the entire night. I don’t care. The Bulls need Rose to score, and that’s exactly what he did. Assists be damned, I’ll take 36 points on 19 shots any day of the week. And twice on Sundays.
Back to the Celtics, Kevin Garnett was missed sorely, which was clearly obvious to anyone who saw Carlos Boozer traipse unimpeded to the hoop. And annoying doesn’t even begin to describe getting (almost literally) nothing from the second unit. While Davis fills in for Garnett as a starter, the Celtics’ bench holds a bunch of wild cards. Do you know what Nate Robinson’s going to offer from one night to the next? Absolutely not. Can you rely on Von Wafer to produce every game? Nope. What about Luke Harangody, Jermaine O’Neal, Marquis Daniels or Semih Erden. No, no, no and no. With Davis starting, I wouldn’t call a single Celtic reserve consistent. Or anything close to it.
Davis wasn’t a stud tonight, either, of course. In fact, it’s time to end this post right now. If I keep writing any longer, I fear Davis will somehow find a way to miss yet another jumper.
Well done, Thibs. Well done.

Pathetic effort. 4 rebs and 10 fouls in the 3rd qtr by the Celtics. -21 rebounds on the night and Noah did not play. So too many fouls (25) and negative rebounds equals a typical loss where the team (especially the bench (6 pts/4 rebs through 3 qtrs and only 10/7 for the game) and specifically Davis 4-17 and only 3 rebs in 42 minutes don’t give the necessary effort. And I could give a f*** that it’s a back to back or whatever excuse anyone wants to make (refs/injuries etc.). Go Cs…learn to rebound!

baby plays 43minutes and grabs 3 rebounds, shoots more than anyone on the team, and ive just been noticing he has more shot attempts than anyone on the team in most the games even when hes coming off the bench, and he just keeps shooting that jumper right inside the 3 point line. i like baby’s efforts but i think hes confusing himself with amar’e or something and its really starting to piss me off. he got blocked almost every single time he shot the ball in the key tonight but that doesnt mean he should be throwing up shots like ray allen. FUCK jermaine should get the start over baby and doc needs a serious talk to him about shooting the ball like hes playing for the warriors or something

I love Rondo but I think the Rose-Rondo debate is over.

I completely agree on the Big Baby comment — he’s taking way too many shots away from their real scorers. Davis’s role, whether coming off the bench or not, is to score his points while on the break or while cutting through the post for open feeds. Also by offensive rebounding and quick followups.
But overall, they did not bring it tonight. All year long, I’ve been afraid of Chicago after seeing their first OT game earlier in the season. Young, athletic teams give the C’s problems. I truly hope they don’t see Chicago in the playoffs, hoping that someone else knocks them out first. Even if the C’s beat the Bulls, it would take so much energy out of them, I wonder how much they would have left for the next round.
The C’s didn’t have Garnett; but the Bulls didn’t have Noah.
I hope the C’s are taking the regular season record seriously. If they come in as a 4 seed like last year, they just might face the Knicks or the Bulls in the first round. That said, they need a 1 or 2 seed so they can have a much easier first round, i.e. Philly or Milwaukee or Indy.

Hey rondeezy–Maybe you should discuss this with Coach K. Oh wait, bad idea, you’re smarter than he is as well.

Rondo’s still hurt. He can’t guard Rose when there is still a visible limp in his step, and might even have trouble when he’s fully healthy. Look closely at last night’s game and you can clearly see Rondo not running at full speed, not driving to the bucket like all of us have seen before, and clearly not initiating on-ball pressure like he should. It’s an issue when his minutes stay in the high 30′s even with a bum leg because, come playoff time, he, and us along with him, are going to be fucked.

@len You can’t say the argument’s over after one game.
And please, all, let’s relax with the “Jermaine O’Neal should start instead of Big Baby” talk. At this point in his career, I highly doubt J.O. could play power forward, and — despite Baby’s recent penchant for shooting far too many jumpers — he’s been tenfold better than J.O. all season.

@Jay I am glad we have Perkins but that doesn’t mean he is as good as Dwight Howard. Same goes for Rondo I love how he plays and he may one day be better than Rose–but not now and that he is based on the whole season not just one game.
Rose 24.2 PPG, 8.1 APG, 4.5 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 3.36 TO
Rondo 10.6 PPG, 13.7 APG, 4.6 RPG, 2.4 SPG, 4.3 TO

20-20 hindsight say JO was a mistake–and I would loved to be proved wrong, however I wouldn’t ask too much of him or Shaq during the regular season. We don’t need either one of them tired and limping into the playoffs. Perkins can’t back too soon and I would drop West, because he can’t be trusted not to disrupt the teams chemistry. His behavior with Von Wafer should have been a one-way ticket out of Boston. He is essentially here on probation and violated the terms. It would be one thing if this were a first time offense but this is a just a continuation of bad behavior.

i dont understand how the argument is over now that in the last three games rose played better over rondo once while rondo was victorious twice, including their last meeting where rondo notched 19 assists. how come the argument wasnt “over” then?

@kathy is this a one on one game –in that case Rose would win-I compared the entire season to date and Rose is better. Why do all these armchair basketball fans think they know more than Coach K who practically a god in the basketball world.

The thing your failing to see is that Rose is more of a score first point guard and Rondo is more of a pass first point gurard. In a league where your judged mostly on your scoring outputs, most will say Rose is the better point guard. You just have to remember when you say something like Rose is better than Rondo, be aware they’re to drastically diffrent style point guards.

@Nick They are both excellent guards and I like them both. Given a choice I would take Rose but I would not feel disappointed to have Rondo. Over time I think Rose can contribute longer because of his shooting skills where Rondo’s effectiveness is more dependent on athleticism. I think Rondo does have the potential to surpass Rose if he can improve his shooting while I don’t think Rose will improve much more.

I agree with Nick regarding the styles of play are different. I’d take Rondo because he rebounds better, defends better and is better dishing the ball. He also is not required to score more because he has 4 HOFs he is starting with, whereas Rose has 0. But RR can also dominate a game if need be. Switch the two and their teams and I am sure RRs scoring goes up and Rose’s goes down. And who cares what Coack K thinks? He thought Sheldon Williams was a great player too and he’s been on 7 teams and is still trying to find his ‘college’ game. Lastly, I think JO should start and Davis come off the bench. Taking 17 shots is not the ‘thinking’ player’s experience we need out there compared to JO who would never take that many shots and actually likes to rebound. Go Cs…learn the value of out-rebounding your opponent.

@len rose might beat rondo 1on1 but why does that even matter? basketballs a team sport. you put up the stats and the only thing rose is better at is scoring and 1 less turnover. so scoring makes him better than rondo? rondo right now is averaging rose’s career high in assist. rose is an excellent scorer, but rondo’s and excellent defender and BEYOND excellent passer. stop sucking coach k’s dick and try to think for yourself

I guess it just really comes down to what you want. I agree, they’re both excellent point guards. But, if you have a team like the Bulls where Rose probably has two or three guys he can trust on a consistent basis, Rose is going to score mOre. Then you have the Celtics where you have a hell of a lot more talent, your going to score less. The celtics have more of a team concept and they move the ball way better, one of the best teams in the league at that. I’d take Rondo any day, not just cause I love the celtics, I like the way he can set up any teammate and can get to any spot on the floor he wants. Rondo can do everything Rose can except shoot. AND rondo plays better defense. Defense wins championships Len.
