Why I could care less about who starts the All-Star game

Just a great picture, no?
A commenter today asked me why I never started an All-Star campaign for the Boston Celtics. The answer to that question is easy — the All-Star game’s the last thing I care about. This season’s not about Rajon Rondo starting rather than Derrick Rose, or Kevin Garnett starting instead of Amare Stoudemire. It’s about a championship, folks, and only a championship.
It doesn’t phase me that no Celtics will start in the All-Star game. In fact, I kind of love it. In a strange way, it validates everything the Celtics stand for. They don’t have a single All-Star starter, but they still hold the East’s best record. They don’t have a single true MVP candidate, but they’re one of the two or three favorites to win a title.
The way the Celtics play, the team is valued far more than the individual. Which is why, since the Big Three came together in the summer of 2007, only one Celtic has ever averaged 20 ppg — and that was just barely, when Pierce averaged 20.5 pgg in ’08-’09 (which was the year KG missed a whole slew of games). Nobody forces shots. Nobody becomes selfish. Nobody gives a damn about who scores the buckets, or who grabs the rebounds, or any other stat. As Kevin Garnett said yesterday, “I’m more into letters, than numbers.” In other words, all KG wants is a ‘W’. It doesn’t matter how that ‘W’ comes. And his teammates echo that mentality.
As a fan, you can care about who starts the All-Star game. You can care that Rondo got beaten out by Rose, or whichever other Celtic you feel deserved to start. Personally, I don’t think any deserved to. But, really, it doesn’t matter either way. Quick, name last year’s All-Star starters. (*Waiting.*) (*Still waiting.*) No? Don’t worry, I can’t name them either. The only one I remember is Allen Iverson, and that’s only because his inclusion on the team was such a monstrosity. I assume Lebron James, Dwyane Wade and Dwight Howard also started, but I’m far from positive. And I couldn’t begin to tell you who started in the West, although I assume Kobe did.
Now, name last year’s NBA champion. It probably makes you want to puke, but you remember. At the end of the year, when it’s all said and done, people don’t remember who starts the All-Star Game; they remember the NBA champion. And championships aren’t won in a meaningless ballot in February. They’re won on the court in June.
Next time you care about no Celtics being named All-Star starters, think first about the team’s mentality. Or, more specifically, the team’s team-first mentality. Then, realize that individual accolades mean nothing to this team. Kendrick Perkins recently spoke about the minutes crunch in the frontcourt, and about how he and Shaq will have to split minutes. “We’re trying for a championship,” said Perk. “It’s bigger than the both of us.”
That the Celtics are on pace for more than 60 wins without a single All-Star starter reminds me of a phrase: Ubuntu. Together, we are more valuable than we are alone.

Maybe you should look at the All-star game as a contest between the best players and enjoy it for what it is. Considering I’ve seen about 50 of these things the dynamics have changed a lot since I watched Russell/West/Robertson/Frazier/Maravich and all the greats play the game. It’s become a slam dunk fest with little defense until the end of the 4th qtr but only then if it is a close game. If you saw any of those older contests then you would have seen sharp play and defense as each side really wanted to best the other. Now nobody wants to get hurt (obviously but also the case way back when) and all they want to do is showboat. It might as well be an And 1 game. It’s too bad because if they played like the players did in the past I think you would ‘care’ a whole lot more. And it’s not about who starts; just making the team is all that matters. Nice post. Go Cs…

Great read I thought it was ironic that both teams in first place in the east and the west did not have one starter on the all-star game.
On the same note ginobolli being snubbed for Carmelo That’s a joke.

Wow Jay King, am still perplexed that I inspired you to write a whole article in response to my comment.Hmmm. Quite emotional but am not buying the crap you selling in this article. I have to say you did one hell of a sorry job trying to justify why you couldn’t help out the Celtics, your supposed beloved team, to get on the All Star team despite the fact that you have quite a little bit of some influence in Boston Sports. Am sure the older Celtics wouldn’t mind too much for not being on the All Star team but but Rajon is still very young and hopes infact dreams to one day be on the All Star team and am sure he would have appreciated a little help/mention from influential sports bloggers like you who claim to be avid fans.
I did not imply that you needed to start a campaign… No one asked you to start a campaign for them either. I just asked why you preach to love the Celtics on your blog but couldn’t help them out with votes..That statement doesn’t sound like a campaign to me..
Also It’s not for you to decided what is more important to them and try and make that an excuse for not caring if they make the All star team or not..but again you know what they say, a bad excuse is better than none at all.
As much as we hear about Celtics Ubuntu (me being Zambian/South African I know what exactly Ubuntu should be), the individual players also want and need individual achievements, believe it or not, but they can’t publicly say it because of the whole Ubuntu thing…It’s the same as, as much as one wants a family achievement we also want and need individual achievements, right? Anyway I too couldn’t care less if you ever mentioned a ‘Vote for your All Star players’ ever but please just stop preaching about how much you love the Celtics when clearly you do not.

@chisala LOL. I have an entire blog dedicated to the Boston Celtics, and I’ve watched every game since I can remember. I spend more time thinking about the Celtics than most people spend being awake. I promise, I love the Celtics.

@Jay, nothing personal. I like your blog but am just mad that they didn’t make All Star. I really wish we the fans could have done more to help them make the team. I would have wanted them to make the team and if they thought it wasn’t as important, then they themselves would have turned the opportunity down then they wouldn’t be viewed as washed up players that aren’t good enough to make the all star..Am outraged..Extremely outraged..Maybe am just relieving the pain of game 7 and watching Kobe walk off laughing while KG was crying..Hurts still.sob.sob. and more sobs

@chisala… They can still make the All-star team and likely will. Unfortunately, The starters are voted on by fans who are clueless and vote as if a popularity contest. why else would Yao Ming have made the team while only playing 5 games to date. He’s out injured. So being voted a starter means nothing. RR will be on the reserves. I think Jay is a huge Celtics fan, sometimes too much as it clouds his vision (summer beer goggles during the season at times perhaps?) but he has been more critical of late as he is seeing some bad tendencies that will affect the team come the playoffs unless they address them during the season. Go Cs…play Harangody more!!!
