Avery Bradley recalled from D-League

Avery Bradley has been recalled from the D-League, and will rejoin the Celtics in Charlotte today. (Boston Globe)

After the bruised spinal cord sustained by Marquis Daniels that will keep him out at least one month and maybe more, the Celtics recalled Avery Bradley from NBDL Maine and will join the club [today] in Charlotte.

Bradley’s already able to defend at an NBA level. We know that. On defense, he’s a great white shark who smells blood. By the end of the game, he knows what flavor of gum his opponent is chewing. He lives inside his opponent’s shirt. Any other defensive cliches I’m missing? Because I could use those, too — Bradley can already play lockdown defense. (Unless he’s playing against a guy named Jeff Teague, who, oddly enough, was the one guard who really made Bradley look like a rookie.)

It’s still to be seen whether Bradley can offer anything offensively, which is currently the side of his game holding him back. But with Nate Robinson struggling, Delonte West still injured, and Marquis Daniels out for at least a month, Bradley might soon get another chance to prove his worth.

He’ll get experience by playing. That’s the only way it works. He’ll be fine offensively as if you – Jay – were out there you would defer to your all-star HOFs and only shoot as the last option or on a break or where it is expected. At least he won’t jack up threes like NR who can’t resist doing it even at the worst of times. Looking forward to seeing how he’s improved. Go Cs…

It’s not the deferring that’s the problem, to me. I’m completely fine with Bradley rarely ever taking shots. It’s the lack of comfort that worries me. He never looks like he’s comfortable. Maybe that will change soon. Maybe not.

Again, I think it’s just a matter of time. Most rookies aren’t comfortable until they are “accepted’ by their teammates (and coach) from earning such in real game situations. They are all nervous to start even KG, Kobe, LBJ but the difference is they get 40 minutes a game and it usually only takes them a few games to get that sense of confidence. Getting 3-5 minutes per game just takes a lot longer. And in essence the rookie ‘stars’ know they aren’t going to get pulled whereas players that have to ‘prove’ themselves live with that threat by the minute, TO or dumb play. If he can get 10-15 mins per game while MD is out and NR is sucking then we’ll know whether he can hold his own on the offensive side. Good to hear about MD as well. Go Cs…
