Delonte West unlikely to play against Nets tonight

Delonte West missed this morning’s shootaround and will likely miss tonight’s game against the New Jersey Nets, according to Gary Washburn’s Twitter account.

West originally broke his right (non-shooting) wrist on November 24, also against the Nets. He re-aggravated the injury yesterday during practice, after which Doc Rivers told reporters West would likely undergo X-rays to determine the extent of his setback.

With Nate Robinson banged up (and, even when he’s not banged up, playing like he’s banged up), the C’s could use West’s steadying presence and point guard skills. Remembering back to preseason (which seems like years ago by now), West and Robinson played very well together, displaying great chemistry. Granted, it was preseason and, granted, it was a small sample size. But the “Nate Robinson plays far better off the ball, because then he can do what he does best: score” theory holds weight, and he would seemingly benefit as much as anybody from West’s return.

Still, after his setback, it’s unclear when West will play again. Rivers did not seem overly worried when discussing the injury, so I remain cautiously optimistic that West did not hurt himself seriously. (ESPN Boston)

“I was worried about [aggravating the injury on Monday] and it happened [Tuesday], so we’ll see,” said Rivers. “I’m sure we’ll do another X-ray to make sure nothing happened.”

Even following yesterday’s practice (and West’s aggravated injury that came with it), Rivers did not rule out the possibility of West playing tonight. But it doesn’t make sense for him to play, if the wrist is yet to entirely heal. The All-Star break could present a nice opportunity for West’s wrist to heal, and to strengthen, so he won’t have any setbacks the next time he returns to the court. After tonight, Boston won’t play another game for six days (February 22, at Golden St.).

I’m trying not to get excited about tonight’s game, knowing that it’s almost certain to be another ugly, ugly, ugly “trap game” performance, and likely an L, but the brave and gutsy victory against the Heat is making it hard for me to fight off enthusiasm…

Speaking of over-enthusiasm, anyone notice that the Heat seemed to try to fight off the miasma of their painful loss to the Cs by showing off a bit extra against the Pacers? I think that could be an interesting window into that team’s psychology.
