Shaq working out hard, in good shape?

Young Shaq.

Getting into shape before the season apparently doesn’t intrigue Shaquille O’Neal. He would rather take a month off during the middle of the season, due to injury, and use that month to begin shedding weight.

“Trust me when I tell you Shaq has been busting it hard for a few weeks now,” wrote Greg Dickerson on Twitter, “and his body is in fantastic shape..dropped 15..look out east!”

As Julian Benbow wrote in a piece for the Boston Globe, “Everything hinges on whether the O’Neals can get healthy and stay healthy.” Which, frankly, sucks. The O’Neals have missed a combined 61 games now. It’s not like their bodies became made of porcelain just this season, either. In the last five seasons, Shaq has played 50 or more (50 or more!) regular season games only twice — 53 last season and 75 in ’08-’09, when the miracle-working Phoenix training staff Mr. Migayi’d his body. Jermaine isn’t a pillar of durability, either. In the last seven seasons, he has played 45 or more (45 or more!) regular season games just three times — 70 games last season, 69 games in ’06-’07, and 51 games in ’05-’06.

Which brings me to the “Danny Ainge knows something about the O’Neals that we don’t, or else he would not have made this trade” argument. Do I believe Ainge knows things about the O’Neals’ rehabilitation that we don’t? Of course. Do I think he can guarantee a healthy postseason from the O’Neals, even with his insider information? How could he? These two big men have been injury problems for years. Their string of injuries this season isn’t just an exception to the rule — it IS the rule. Even last year, when Jermaine made it to the postseason still standing, he was hurting. He shot something like 2-fer-3,948,483 in the first round, against the Celtics… blaming his struggles on — guess what? — an injury. (Jermaine said he got “kicked in the ankle.”) Even if Ainge knows the O’Neals are both progressing well, he couldn’t possibly predict their health come May or June. Their bodies have proven shaky, for years.

Kendrick Perkins also has an injury, right now, and that’s important to point out. But Perkins, despite a rash of minor shoulder injuries in the past, had always been durable before this season. The past four seasons, he played more than 70 games each year. In other words, Perkins played 70 games or more games each of the past four seasons; in the past decade, the O’Neal brothers have combined for five 70-game seasons. The recent knee injuries are troublesome, indeed. But Perkins could normally be trusted to stay on the court. He has been far more durable, during his career, than either of the O’Neals.

“We still have size,” said Celtics coach Doc Rivers. “I’m almost laughing at people that say we don’t have size. Last time I checked, Jermaine O’Neal and Shaq and Krstic, they’re pretty big. It’s almost laughable to me that people keep saying you’ve lost size. I think we may still be the biggest team in the NBA.”

The Celtics still do have size. Plenty of it. But the C’s traded away two seven-foot centers at the trade deadline, receiving only one in return. Left on Boston’s roster are three seven-foot centers (a number down from four last week). Two of those seven-footers have injury histories, both past and present.  The other is Nenad Krstic, who can certainly play effective minutes but lacks the girth to defend real centers. Not that there are many real centers in the league, but still.

It’s now a good time to point out that Glen Davis has finished almost every game as Boston’s center. That’s a valid point, and calming. But the Celtics could use a bigger, bulkier player to gobble up minutes, and to match up with the Dwight Howards and Andrew Bynums — especially in the playoffs, when the pace slows and size becomes more valuable than ever. If the O’Neals aren’t healthy, is Krstic capable of being that guy?

There’s no guarantee Perk would have been healthy for the postseason. But history tells us he has a better chance than either of the O’Neals.

“We want them to get healthy,” Paul Pierce told the Boston Globe, referring to the O’Neals. “They’re everything that we need to make a run at the championship. If they don’t get healthy then it’s going to be tough.”

Isn’t that a scary thought?

Jay itis time to move on. Perk is a member if the thunder you need not mention him at all in this article. Talking Aboutmoerk does nothing. We must look to the future. Not the past. #allaboutbanner18

I think DA’s moves are still fair game but missing from Jay’s discussion is while we lost KP who is a question mark healthwise, we also gained Green. Let’s face it Pierce while effective cannot go mano a mano for 48 minutes and he would wear down in the playoffs without Green to backup both him and Ray Allen.

So when you think that we will have a rested Pierce/Allen going into the playoffs, and the gamble that at least one of the ONeals will contribute I think DA deals look good. Keeping KP and hoping he would be healthy would also be a gamble so whatever DA did would have been fraught with risk.

I agree that Green will help to keep the wings fresh, while providing his do-everything-but-excel-at-nothing help (which I mean as a good thing). Just talking about the big guys here.

Any center that comes in will most likely improve his defensive game–players respond when demands are made and the culture of the Celtics dictates a strong defensive effort–just ask Von Wafer–everyone said Krstic was soft and just a finesse player but lo and behold his first game as a Celtic he is effectively mixing it up in the paint.

OK Jay now I’m getting ‘angry’ again. In regards to your comment about KP, which I hope you get over soon, like today, and stop writing about as he is gone, you said he “had always been durable before this season”. Key word ‘had’ but that applies to ALL players that ever step on the court. An injury can happen at any random moment. Just ask KP or KG. So what’s to stop another more serious injury from happening? Is he worth the extension vs getting 2 healthy starters including one DA drafted and liked but had to give up to get better? Well he made the trade to get better. Of course, every single time I’d make that trade and I would hope DA would too. We got PP help and a younger more athletic wing since (plug in a name if you can) …forever. How many articles have you written about the Cs needing a wing player? 25? 50? At least.

So let’s take your ‘fears’ and analyze what the team would be like without both O’Neals. So now let’s say they’re not available but we still have 2 – 7′ centers, Murphy (hopefully) and Green all of them new and able to help the front line issues. Again, center by committee and Green to defend, score off the bench and give rest to PP. Did we have anything close to that last year? NO. And we still made it to Game 7. I like our chances as long as we get Murphy, Leon (if healthy) and either keep CJ or find another center (and you know I’m all for Sheed to come back) or good player. The bottom line is our bench is better with DW/VW/JG/CJ and the new guys coming than anything the Cs trotted out last playoffs. KG is 100% healthy and therefore to sum my argument up – the Celtics, even without the O’Neals, are better than last year’s team (I think by far). So when the O’Neals come back which I believe they will in good playing shape (that’s what DA knows and of course no one can guarantee anyone will not be injured again or newly injured (RR/PP/RA etc.)) then that just makes the Cs EVEN better and deeper. The front line is deeper and more pts off the bench.

Last point. As proven last season the regular season means SQUAT to veteran players. Hell, if they could get paid and just play playoff games they’d all sign up immediately. Because that’s where the fun and purpose of playing are found; i.e. to win the title. Shaq is better off not coming back until mid April as far as I am concerned. Let him workout, get stronger, get healthy as I think he understands what playoff runs mean. JO can come back sooner as I think he needs a little more playing time with the team that Shaq already has under his belt. But April is key so rotations and getting in sync for the run are established. I am so not worried about Shaq because he signed on to win titles (yes, more than 1) and if the playoffs were happening I believe he would be playing right now. The difference this season is that the Cs are currently seeded #1 in the East. While it would be nice to have the home court advantage, catching the Spurs will not happen unless they start having injuries. But the Cs can beat anyone, anywhere, anytime as that’s how they roll in the playoffs. So having the #1 seed is allowing Shaq more time to get healthy as he really isn’t needed at this point in the season. If catching the Spurs gets down to 2 games compared to the 5 game spread now then I might want to see him back sooner; and maybe that happens in April anyhow. Bottom line is our team is much better right now than last year’s and has more talent. I love our chances as long as the critical injury does not happen. But that’s what all teams have to deal with and our depth if such an injury does occur (JG for PP, DW for RR or VW for RA, etc.) may just allow some crippling injury to most teams not affect the Cs because of how DA has built this team. Whew…sorry for the length. Is it game-time yet? Go Cs…

At this point, Rivers is just embarrassing himself, trying to ‘sell’ a horrible trade with silly arguments, and so are fans who hand out variations on ‘just get over it’ and ‘stfu’. This was a horrible trade, and the history-rewriting smoke and mirrors about the magic of “spacing”, about Perkins being an injury prone scrub who didn’t matter anyway, about Jay Green being the WunderKind and Shaq being reborn … and on and on and on and on … the deeper and more absurd all these justifications become, the more they reveal the absurdity of the situation Danny has put us in.

HE TRADED A CHAMPIONSHIP QUALITY STARTER FOR TWO CHAMPIONSHIP QUALITY BENCH GUYS! He traded a gaping whole on the bench for a bigger gaping hole in the starting unit. He got so worried about having no one to back up Pierce that he got us into a situation where we have no quality starting center at all. Oh sure, we have a good backup center in Krstic, and if we get Murphy we’ll have another backup Big. BUT WE DON’T GOT A STARTER!

    WTF!

Oh wait, Shaq is gonna come back and be in great shape and super-motivated and won’t ever go down again. And the skies will open and green colored roses will descend upon us, accompanied by green colored doves that sing like canaries. … If we are lucky, Shaq will be back in a week or so, and we’ll get some motivated play from him for a week or two or three. And that would be great. But we still need a quality starting center. And we had one. Three days ago.

Paul…how do you equate KP’s 5.8 pts and 5.8 rebs per last season’s Finals as “a quality starting center”??? You need to get over it. And yes, obviously I am “one of those people”. Your analyses up to the ‘trade’ were quite good but now your sour grapes are getting real old, real fast. It takes talent to get talent and I would rather center by committee and have Green’s talent than have KP any day. KP is not out 3 days but now several weeks. But you want to trust KP’s knees over improving the team’s chances to win the title? Again, we do not need the O’Neals to win the title because our team is that much better becasue of the trade. Go Cs…

damn get over it… if someone doesnt agree with the trade let them be… i dont know why everyone here is trying to convince the people that do not agree with the trade to understand that the trade was good and see eye to eye with them. the kp sucks and kp needs to be here arguments that have been going on in the last like 20 articles have to stop…

I loved seeing KP on the floor–OK he was a defensive security blanket when he was healthy-I’ll grant you that–but offensively not so much and he could never be counted on in that regard–please don’t tell me that it doesn’t matter that he had no offense. Are we better now?–YES–why?-because we have someone who will prevent our older forwards from getting burnt out and we have a center that can also play offense. At least I don’t have to watch KP get the ball in the paint, gather himself, put the ball on the floor and get stuffed because he gave the defenders so much time to set up shop.
