Why the Erden/Harangody trade?

It’s reasonably safe to say the Boston Celtics are done dealing, which is okay. Danny Ainge has put together a deep team, one that will (hopefully) be able to withstand whatever injuries occur (and, on this team, injuries will inevitably occur). Even if you disagree with the Jeff Green trade, it’s not hard to see why Ainge made the deal (versatility, roster flexibility, faith in the O’Neals — wait, what?). Likewise, adding Troy Murphy made sense. So did the Marquis Daniels trade. The Celtics only received a 2017 (!) second-round draft pick in return, but Daniels probably won’t play another second this season.

One move Ainge made at the trade deadline looks less justifiable: Semih Erden and Luke Harangody for a second-rounder.

At the time, I figured Ainge had a plan for the two roster spots opened by the trade. I envisioned him adding two proven vets, even if the vets’ best days were behind them. Richard Hamilton’s name was tossed around as a buyout candidate, and so was Samuel Dalembert’s. The Celtics could have added Troy Murphy with Daniels’ roster spot, then added two veterans to take Erden and Harangody’s places.

In reality, they added Sasha Pavlovic and “Empty Roster Spot X.” Confusing, I know. (Note: Chris Johnson occupies that spot for now, but I don’t suspect the Celtics will keep him beyond his ten-day contract.)

Erden will not necessarily become a star, or anywhere close to it. He’s already 24 years old, and his PER (10.75) and rebounding rate (12.2) both scream “not terrific.” But still, he’s a rookie seven-footer with potential. Unless you trade him for something of worth, you might as well hold onto him and let him develop. Especially considering how the Celtics have struggled considerably with injuries all season, and Erden provided depth in the frontcourt. If Glen Davis misses any extended time due to his injury, Erden certainly could have helped.

I wrote “unless you trade him for something of worth, you might as well hold onto him and let him develop.” Sasha Pavlovic, by any measure, is not something of worth. The only way Pavlovic ever sees the court (at least, if Doc Rivers understands how bad he has been for the past five years) is if the Celtics experience an onslaught of injuries at the wing. Even then, Von Wafer would seem a far better option than Pavlovic. As would my grandmother.

Even if the Celtics have a different view of Pavlovic than most observers, they could have added him while also holding onto Erden. Cut Harangody, pay the remainder of his $437,604 salary (plus luxury tax), and keep Erden while still adding a roster spot.

Maybe the trade was about money? But, combined, Erden and Harangody made less than $1 million this season, and will make approximately $1.5 million next season. Wyc Grousbeck, Steve Pagliuca and the Celtics owners have normally been more than willing to pay for winners, and Erden and/or Harangody were hardly out of their price range.

Most likely, Ainge thought the Celtics could add two veterans with the deal, but the buyout market did not pan out the way he expected. Now, the Celtics lost a talented seven-footer with potential (and Luke Harangody), using their two deserted roster spots to add only Sasha Pavlovic.

The Perkins trade is defensible, at worst, and some would even say a very good trade (though only time will tell). But the Erden/Harangody trade? Unless Ainge has another signing up his sleeve, the early returns say:

Blah.

Harangody will be out of the league shortly (not a good pro, Ainge recognized that) and Erden’s got a bum shoulder.

Lol! I knew you’d slide right over to supporting The Trade. See, it’s important in Blog World to stay fairly close to the Herd. Stray too far and you lose ‘respect’ (never mind that it’s not respect worth having), and people stop linking to you and so forth and so on.

No, it’s NOT easy to see why Ainge made the trade, unless you choose to follow the herd in ignoring the fact that, while making a move to strengthen the bench made lots of sense, making a move to put a hole in the starters made no sense at all.

The real reason for The Trade, I’m increasingly convinced, was to give Doc and the starters new toys to play with. It’s become so obvious that the only opponent that can beat the Big Four is boredom.

I didn’t say I agreed with the trade.Still VERY worried about relying on the O’Neals come playoff time. But you can see why he did it. Versatility, yada yada yada.

I think the Big Four are potentially as dominant as teams like Michael Jordan’s teams. That’s what a lot of the folks advocating the Star Clumping approach to building winners don’t seem to get. These aren’t any four stars gathered together. This is a very special group, knitted together very tightly, and all very intelligent individually and collectively.
The big difference between the Big Four Celtics and the MJ Bulls is that, where MJ seems to have an almost psychotically competitive nature, none of the Big Four have that, not even Garnett or Rondo. Oh yes, they are all hyper-competitive, but mostly they really love the game of basketball, and they love to be challenged in the context of that game. Some part of each of those guys just loves the challenge of finding a way to make this new group of guys work as a team on the run – I think Garnett and Rondo particularly like the challenge.

Erden has a bum shoulder, true. But he’d played through it all season, and played reasonably well. It also would have been nice to keep him for next year, considering that his spot is currently occupied by Chris Johnson (who probably won’t be around in a couple days).

    @nate

Yes, I agree he probably thought other buyouts would materialize. But they didn’t, and now the Celtics gave away Erden/Harangody (and mostly Erden) for almost nothing.

Actually Erden had regressed since he was out (Doc said so) and he is very distracted by his mother’s illness back home and very homesick. Perk had also regressed to his old hands of stone, bring the ball down/bring the ball up ways. Perk had peaked in his development and with his injuries. Harangody is a short Murphy, without the experience.

Put all these moves in a trade and it is a blockbuster steal for the Celtics. Built for this year and very flexible for the future. I think Krstic play will surprise you now that he is playing with the Big 4, just like You Know Who’s play was better because of it. It will be interesting to see Perk’s PER and his RR on the Thunder next year, as well as Krstic’s, who is 27 and has less NBA miles on him than Perk, who’s knees have Bynumitis.

I am not worried about losing Perk’s D as it was a function of KG more than people credit it for. Look at what Perk did when KG was out vs what the Celtics did when Perk was out with KG in the lineup.

You can parse this moves out and be picky like in your lead premise (i.e. we got nothing in return for Semih/Harangody) or you can see the whole sum of the moves as one big roster change and do the math. It adds up to a much improved roster with health, depth and experience.

The Harangody/Eden trade was TOTALLY seperate from the OKC deal – I don’t know why people are lumping them together…that ‘s why it is refreshing to see this Celtics Town piece.

It was totally done because the Celtics thought they might need those spots for trades/pick ups. Now that it turns out we didn’t need those spots and we are left with a 2013 2nd round pick (right?), I’m still fine with unloading Erden and Luke. Erden always put the ball on the floor when he touched the ball around the basket instead of going right up with it – so frustrating – and Luke will be a Notre Dame assistant coach in 2 years.

Now we have a chance to get a 10 day look at Courtney Sims or Marcus Cousin…

Part of the decision had to due with their inexperience. I dont think Doc and Co fully trusted them in crunch time

I still like the SE/LH trade as now we can see what CJ develops into and can still sign another player or bring DeShawn Sims back from Maine which I am all for, if SP does not work out or if CJ flames out on his 10-day (which he can get another before a decision is made). Sims can play and should be given a chance to develop but also be around the team as it prepares for the playoff run to soak it all in and gain experience from the bigs. Go Cs…P S. I have faith in you Jay that you’ll rebound and find the ‘Green’ happy place everyone expects from you by mid-March… is my guess.

This was clearly a salary-motivated move by Ainge and Co. If he had just cut them, their salaries (for this year and next) would have remained on the cap and Wyc would have had to pay luxury tax as well. So that’s a (pro-rated) $2m this year and $3m next year in cash that the Celtics don’t have to pay, to open up two roster spots.

Let’s be honest– Haragody wasn’t going to get any PT the rest of this year once Murphy signed (except in blowouts, when it wouldn’t matter), and once Shaq gets healthy Erden wouldn’t have gotten any playing time either. There’s still a small chance that they become useful NBA players (Erden especially, as a 7 footer with some athleticism), but it wasn’t worth $5m to find out. I know we drool over guys like Bill Walker and Gerald Green and Patrick O’Bryant all the time, as young players with potential, but over time they almost always wash out of the league in the end. Plus, that 2013 2nd rounder might end up being the 33rd or 34th pick, which is great value– the talent level of a last first-round pick with the unguaranteed contract of a 2nd rounder.

(I suppose ‘Gody has the ‘scrappiness’ and work ethic and not the athleticism/body, and Erden is just raw, as opposed to the guys I listed that have the physical skills but don’t ‘get’ the game. But we also tend to overrate our own players regularly, and I don’t think Erden is a good enough rebounder or Harangody is a good enough defender to stick in this league).

    @ Jet
Right – inexperienced and dumpable (in the nicest possible way).

    @ James
No need for DeShawn Sims – more need for Courtney based on size. Or Marcus Cousin. Chris Johnson is too skinny…puts up decent D-League #’s, but doesn’t have a pro body built for the NBA painted area. I do like DeShawn though…maybe we should bring up him and Tiny Gallon :)

    @ John
Well said. Except I don’t rememer ever drooling over Patrick O’Bryant.

My buddy and I have been talking about this very point all week. This trade made no sense. We thought the same thing, that Ainge had a move up his sleeve. The best explanation I have heard was from A. Sherrod Blakely that if we had kept SE/LH we would have had a harder time lureing Murphy as we would have had too many bigs and then he may have chosen Miami.

My issue with this trade is a little different than everyone else. The Celtics used 2 second round draft picks to get these guys. They could have decided not to offer them contracts but they thought enough of each of them to keep them on over Lasme and others. This leads me to believe that they were satisfied with the use of those draft picks and that they were worth while. So my point is that it seems to me that evan if the Celtics needed the space they should have been able to “get there money back” so to speak, and get at least 2 second round draft picks for these guys. I mean Semi only slipped to the 60th pick in 08 because he needed to go back to Turkey to finish out his contract or something, as an athletic 7 footer he certainly should have gone higher. One second rounder, and I think it was a 2013 or 2014 second rounder seems like a joke.

Regardless of whether or not Erden has a bum shoulder or anything of that sort, we can agree that he is a big body, when we need it most, and is much better than Pavlovic. Thanks for writing this post, my room mate and I have been saying this since the trade deadline– while I don’t necessarily agree with the perk/nate-jgreen/kris trade I get what the intent was. This one I don’t understand at all.

U didn!t notice that Pavlovic is Serb/Montenegro (wich is the same) like Krstic and two will go along just perfect, u will see that they would have a chemistry, and one will help another to adjust, and rise others value, they must have been played together sometimes in the past..and krstic playd with green, green with krstic and west, pavlovic with west and krstic, i might been wrong and my english is not so good, but i can see connection…
