Shaq says he’s 85% healthy; Ainge explains the Jeff Green trade

Shaquille O’Neal made a public appearance today, which means the media assaulted him for an update on his health situation. Shaq explained to his assaulters how he would play Wednesday if it were a playoff game, and how his body’s now 85% healthy. The Green Mile believes he’ll return in another week or so, and might have returned already were it not for a setback he experienced last week. (Chris Forsberg’s Twitter account)

In other news, Danny Ainge spoke about his reasons for making the Jeff Green trade.

One of the reasons was “[From a health standpoint,] Shaq’s better than he was in the fall.” There were more reasons. (Sports Illustrated)

First of all, we were leading the conference because of Shaq. We had a better record with Shaq than we did with Perk. Our offense was better and our defense was at least the same. I don’t think Perk is Perk yet. I hope that he becomes that for Oklahoma City’s sake. We thought it was going to take some time for Perk. He wasn’t the shot-blocker or the rebounder that he’s been in the past. We think that by adding Jeff Green (Green had 21 against the Warriors last Friday), Nenad Krstic, and Troy Murphy we think we’re a better team than we were. Shaq was starting for us when we had the great run this year. Baby (Glen Davis) was finishing for us. So we basically lost middle minutes.

Just to set the record straight, Perkins’ rebounding rate this season was his best since The Big Three Era began (though he played only a few games in Boston this season, leaving a small sample size).

Ainge continued.

Nobody put more time and effort into helping Perk become a better player and a better man than me. I spent so much time with Perk. I feel like I raised him in the NBA. I’m a big fan of Kendrick Perkins. I just think we have every bit as good a team now, and it helps us for the future. And the numbers back that up. Now if Shaq and Jermaine [O'Neal] can’t play we could be in trouble. But Perk’s out for three weeks right now. He’s coming off an ACL tear and he’s got a sprained MCL on the other knee so the health of all of those players is in question. I’m a Perk fan. Love him as a player. But I think he’s a player that is not irreplaceable. Time will tell.

After five games post-trade (I throw out the loss to the Nuggets, because the new acquisitions did not suit up), Ainge looks like a genius. Jeff Green has been everything the Celtics could have wanted, Nenad Krstic looks like a poor man’s (okay, maybe a homeless man’s) Kevin McHale, and the Celtics are 5-0. Not bad.

There’s also this: (Boston Herald)

“Doc’s a mastermind when it comes to the lineups,” Garnett said. “He’s throwing some things offensively and defensively, things that we haven’t seen since the James Posey days. Man, I’m telling you, every time I see Jeff Green I’m just more impressed. The versatility of this guy is unbelievable. He’s just helping us so much right now.”

There are problems, of course. I point you to Ainge’s comment: “If Shaq and Jermaine can’t play we could be in trouble,” and I could also point out how the new-look Celtics have yet to play a contender. But the trade’s effect has been mostly rosy so far, unless you find five-game winning streaks miserable.

That Shaq’s apparently close to a return only makes my growing smile wider, even if I’m still in “I’ll believe Shaq’s return when I see it” mode.

It’s too early to tell, since they are completely out of sync with everyone learning the system.

@Jay, I agree they haven’t played any great opponents yet, but being 5-0 against mediocre teams is a good sign, since they were previously losing against such teams.

Rebounding is going to be the key, no matter who’s on the court. I know Doc has his plate full right now, but once things start to gel, they need to focus on that more than anything. Rebounding is a team effort, not something expected only of the big men.

Watching the C’s yesterday, especially in the first half, they need to go back and do some drills like we did in freshman basketball practice. They all stand around when the ball goes up, nobody boxes out their man. They play great D but then fail to chase down the board. It is truly a team thing.

To make up for the loss of Perk (and possibly the ONeals) they will have to compensate as a team. Yesterday, some of the smallest players on the Bucks were grabbing boards, simply out of hustle.

It’s getting more and more frustrating, to see this every night.

We needs Shaq for the playoffs —and even the season where he struggled to play 50 games —he was always there for playoff push—I dont expect anything different with the celtics—-dont rush him back Doc

As I have been saying all along, Shaq will be there when needed. He is not needed yet. Playoffs yes, sub .500 teams’ part of the schedule – NO, as he could get injured again. He can come back in mid April as far as I’m concerned, although I do enjoy watching him so maybe a little sooner. The bottom line is Shaq is a winner and knows what it takes and when to bring it. He has already proved his value and will deliver when he is back. Chris H…good pts especially about the lack of ‘hustle’ but this is a Vet team and they tend to coast as we saw last season. Go Cs…

An observation about Krstic: If Shaq makes it back to play, and I think he will, if we make it to the Finals, I think Krstic has sufficient mobility to be able to defend Gasol. Krstic doesn’t have the heft to handle Bynum, but with Shaq back, that won’t be an issue. Krstic doesn’t have the quicks to handle Odom, but the combo of KG and Jeff Green will handle him just fine.

I’m just a little intrigued by the possibility of Krstic being able to defend Gasol. As we all know, this whole endeavor probably rests on Shaq’s ability to come back. I’m not even bringing JO into the equation because anything we get from him is found money, in my view. I also think that Murphy should be just about rounding into form by the time the playoffs start. It’s fascinating to watch all this unfold with less than a month and a half til the playoffs.

I don’t know why Doc is not in consideration for COY. I don’t think anyone has dealt with more injuries and roster flux than he has, and considering he’s kept us as number 1 seed in the east, it’s worthy of COY consideration, but you never hear his name come up.

If and when Shaq returns, does anyone have faith that he’ll actually STAY healthy? Shaq can’t even get through the healing process without getting another injury. He’s been out of the lineup for a while now and it’s going to take some time for him to get re-acclimated with the system. I’m not buying him saying he’s a week away. He’s been saying that for about three weeks now. I’ll believe it when I see him on the floor. He’s going to be needed very soon.

Shaq’s too fat to stay healthy. His legs & feet can’t support that amount of weight running (actually lumbering) up and down the floor. Until he drops some weight these issues will continue to repeat itself.

Actually, I’m more interested to see JO come back because I think we need to keep Shaq pretty much on the bench until the playoffs.
Platoon JO, Kristic and BBD at Center until the playoffs and Murphy and Green at PF so that KG and Shaq can get rested until the playoffs.
We’ll need Shaq, KG, Ray and PP healthy for the playoffs.
I also advocate that toward the end of the season Doc pushes to lock in the #1 seed until we are enough games ahead to just play our backups for almost the whole game.
That way the starters can rest and the bench can get a large ammount of minutes together.
The last few games of the season I want the starters playing >20 mins a game and the bench playing 30+. Lineup can be West, Wafer, Green, Murphy and JO or Kristic with the backups to them of Aroyo, Bradley and Pavlovich playing maybe 5 mins. Tighten up the rotation for the playoffs Doc!
