And the switch remains off: Celtics fall to Bobcats

payday loans

I don’t know what to write about. I honestly don’t.

I’m looking at a blank screen and thinking about D.J. White dominating, and I don’t know what the hell to type. I’m thinking about the Celtics getting outscored 30-15 in the fourth quarter, and I’m thinking about when the camera panned to Doc Rivers and he looked like someone attending a funeral. I’m thinking about how Rajon Rondo didn’t have an assist in the entire first half, and about how he has seemed completely bored with basketball the past few weeks. I’m thinking about Dante Cunningham (Dante Cunningham!) hitting a game-winning jumper, and I’m thinking about Ray Allen missing a wide open three that would have won, and I’m thinking about Kevin Garnett’s futile last-second heave, and I’m thinking about how it never should have gotten to that point.

When the Celtics led by 13 points, I was already cursing their effort. That they lost, blowing that entire lead in the fourth quarter, was only appropriate. They deserved to lose. Even playing against a team that started Kwame Brown, Boris Diaw, Dominic McGuire, Gerald Henderson and D.J. Augustin, the Celtics deserved to lose. They didn’t care. They didn’t care to do the small things, like boxing out and sprinting in transition. They didn’t care to do the big things, like defending or playing offense. There’s something seriously missing in Boston right now, something that’s quickly knocking them out of contention for the East’s top seed, something that has even put them in danger of losing home-court advantage against the Miami Heat. What’s missing, exactly? I don’t know. But whatever it is, it has the Celtics playing like zombies.

I don’t want to overreact to one game, but it hasn’t just been one game. It’s a growing pattern which is manifesting itself just like it manifested itself last year, back when Kendrick Perkins admitted the Celtics were bored with the regular season. Maybe they’re bored now. Maybe they’re more hobbled by injuries than we know. Maybe they miss Perkins, or gave up trying for Lent, or have been watching too much NCAA basketball to concentrate on their own play, or really hated the movie “The Adjustment Bureau” and are trying to boycott it by showing they can lose on their own free will.

I don’t know. I have no idea what’s bothering the Celtics, and that’s what’s most troublesome. I can point to Rondo and blame him, but the problems go far beyond Rondo’s oddly disinterested play. I can point to the Kendrick Perkins trade, but that was actually supposed to improve the offense, not make everything a bloody mess. Plus, the trade shouldn’t make the Fab Four so much less productive. Maybe there’s something to the “loss of Ubuntu” theory; in other words, maybe the loss of Perkins hurt chemistry in ways John Hollinger’s formulas could never account for. But I thought—I think—the Big Three are too professional for that, too driven by winning. Aren’t they? Additionally, these losses remind of last year, when Perk was around and healthy. So maybe it’s something else. Or maybe not. As you can probably tell by my rambled thoughts in this paragraph, I’m confused.

The sky isn’t falling. The playoffs will come, and Boston’s energy will improve, and the Celtics will still (rightfully) be considered contenders for the NBA championship, and no team will want to play the Celtics in the postseason, no matter how many times they lose to sub-.500 teams during this slump. But these losses are frustrating, and they should piss us off as fans, and I can only hope they infuriate the Celtics as much as they infuriate me.

At one point, almost despite themselves, and I’ve already mentioned this but it bears repeating, the Celtics led by 13 points. The lead should have been about somewhere between 30 and 40 points at that point, but it wasn’t. They just didn’t seem to care enough to build a big lead, no matter how badly the Bobcats, a 28-42 team missing two of its best players, sucked. The game shouldn’t have come down to the final twelve minutes, and it shouldn’t have come down to the final two three-pointers.

But it did. Eleven games until the playoffs. The proverbial switch remains off.

I think the key problem with this team on the offensive end right now is Rondo. Earlier in the year one of the C’s blogs (forgive me if it was this one Jay) had an article about how there was a flaw in the Celtics’ success in so far as the Big 3 weren’t having miracle-career years because their legs had suddenly found the fountain of youth. In fact, the article went on to prove that even Pierce couldn’t create his own shot the way he used to and that the true fountain of youth was Rondo, his amazing court vision and incredible passing ability.

Something’s terribly wrong with Rondo. He doesn’t even resemble that player that chased down and dove for that ball to take it from behind an unsuspecting Jason Williams and then lay it up right in his face. Maybe it’s the injuries, maybe it’s the Perk trade… maybe it’s both. Months ago some people saw that the Celtics success relied almost completely on Rondo’s offense and KG’s defense. Now Rondo’s off and at least on the offensive end it’s throwing this whole thing out of whack.

So much for all the BIG ‘practice’ talk. Pathetic. Two qtrs. of 17 pts & 15 pts isn’t going to beat Jay’s JV team. PP and all the guards (bench, too) combined averaged 1 reb every 10 minutes. That’s not going to gain anything other than more loses. Celtics SUCK right now. Go Cs…stop talking and start playing with some intelligence!

I also think that Doc is a major problem because he is not doing anything to shake the team up, address the lack of rebounding, or talk about the poor shooting. Again, why not sit Rondo a game or two? At this point what’s the worse that can happen? Another lame loss like this? Go Cs…

If we had won the last two games we would all be saying how we won on defense… our dee hasn’t been that bad.

I lost sleep after the Memphis lost, which means tonight I will be a ZOMBIE.
Ray is in great shape, but his legs need rest.Because his shooting percentage is way down.
The whole team’s destiny is in the hands of one man,and his name rhymes with Hondo. That is the bottom line. This team goes as Rondo goes, and if he’s not dishing,we are just wishing.
Garnett has no defensive help in the post. That means you have to sit Kristic and start Big Baby if you want to win anymore games.
The good news is,are bench is vastly improved with Green and West and the O’Neal’s,when they come back.More good news, nobody is blowing us out and we are holding teams under 100.Even with Kristic in the lineup. Are problem is offense not defense.
EXECUTION AND BALL MOVEMENT AND OFF THE BALL MOVEMENT.
More good news,if we get the second seed,we play New York.I predict a sweep in the Garden since the Knicks play no defense.
We are going to see Chicago or Miami anyway,so what the hell.Let’s not wear ourselves out.
Let us pray for wins in San Antonio, who just lost to Portland. And let us pray for wins against Miami and Chicago at the end of the season. So we can send a clear message to the league.Everybody thought the Lakers were dead before the All-Star break,Everyone goes through this.Let’s have some perspective.
The CELTICS ARE NOT DEAD by any means.

    At James and Kennard:

Good comments. And why isn’t Doc doing something to shake up the lineup? Rondo needs to sit out a few games, either to rest his body, or to make him want his starting job back, or both. Ray Allen is TIRED! Why use him all these minutes when they are losing anyway?

the number one seed is gone, folks. Admit it. Congrats to the Bulls who wanted it more. So now it’s time to plan for the playoffs as the number 2 or 3 seed, likely 3.

Doc has said that he would choose resting his players over winning regular season games, yet he’s doing neither. They are losing and only getting more tired.

I’m not as optimistic as Jay right now. They are going to be weak defensively without Perkins. Too much is on KG (and older KG). And even if the O Neals come back, how much production are you going to get? Shaq is always in foul trouble and Jermaine is a ghost of his old self.

This team is in trouble folks. The Bulls are going into the playoffs full steam ahead, getting more confident with every win, and gelling as a young, athletic team that wants to become champions.

By the time the C’s decide to hit that switch, they may find out it’s much too late.

I am so pissed and frustrated right now.

At halftime I said “fuck it” and shut down the stream I was watching. The C’s were merely going through the motions against a pathetic team, when they could’ve chill out on the bench in the fourth quarter and get some Gino if only they came with that famous “sense of urgency” they’re all preaching before games and forget once they step on the court.

I think all this nonsense with Rondo has to stop. Like KG said, everyone is hurting at this point and I can’t believe his slopiness should be credited to his pinky finger, his foot or whatever. It’s fairly obvious he is not interested in playing basketball right now. Remember the game at MSG when he was oddly resembling his old self. He can play if he chooses to.

We should’ve cruised to the playoffs by vanquishing sorry teams like the Bobcats, Nets or whatever early in games with our starters, allowing them to rest while the subs would get court time and gel as a solid second unit. Right now, the starters play way too much because they do not start games with this damn “sense of urgency” they keep on talking about and throw out of the window once they start a game.

Yeah, I know they flipped the switch in a quite remarkable manner last spring, but we shouldn’t be counting on a repeat while we were in such great a position to avoid this situation just two weeks ago.

Wake me up when the playoffs begin…
