Celtics actually resemble the Celtics in beating Spurs, 107-97

We wait for so long for the switch to flip. We wonder whether the Celtics will ever play championship-caliber basketball again. We blame the Perkins trade. We blame Danny Ainge. We blame Rajon Rondo. We blame anyone who plays poorly, and we blame anyone in the front office who might have caused the players to play poorly. We even blame the O’Neals, whose bodies just won’t work properly, even though we know they’d be on the court if they could. It’s somewhat irrational, this blame game, this amount of time we spend pondering a basketball team, the theories we create to explain why a crew of NBA players doesn’t seem to care, but it’s what being a fan—a true fan—entails. During the good times, we fall in love. During the bad times, we’re still in love but love fucking hurts.

And then our team suddenly cares, and we remember how beautiful it was to watch them, and we remember exactly why they were considered title favorites as recently as a month ago. Rajon Rondo operates on another level most players could only dream of, and the offense runs well, and the defense looks suffocating, and the Celtics execute the Spurs to death like they were a bunch of rookies, and that love becomes beautiful again, like the first time you heard the Beatles.

The Celtics’ sense of purpose was so much better tonight, and by that I mean it actually existed. Maybe it was because Jermaine O’Neal returned. Maybe it was because the Celtics were waiting for a legitimate opponent. Maybe Doc Rivers gave a terrific motivational speech. Maybe the Celtics finally decided collectively, “We’d rather not shit the bed this time.” Maybe playing Matt Bonner, wink wink, was exactly the challenge Boston needed. Maybe Sasha Pavlovic offered a pregame prayer, or Troy Murphy killed a sacrificial chicken (a la Pedro Cerrano), or Kevin Garnett ran around naked making “Yo Momma” jokes to lighten the mood. The truth is, I don’t know why they showed up tonight after boycotting the past 12 games. I just know it was nice to see the Celtics finally resemble the Celtics.

A dominant second half allowed the Celtics to coast to a win, but the increased effort began in the first half. Contested shots. Rotating defenders. Box outs. Hard cuts, like the game meant something, like the Celtics finally decided to cut the bullshit and play like a real team. I took offense when Tony Parker drove unmolested to the hoop time after time, but the Celtics made adjustments. I took offense when George Hill hit Paul Pierce to the floor and nobody got in his face, lamenting the Celtics’ suddenly soft play. But they played hard, and they kept fighting, and by the end of the day they had a swagger about them that hasn’t been evident lately.

Rondo led the way, and he played an almost-perfect game. Doc Rivers called his shooting “coach’s porn,” and I would like to add that it was also “blogger’s porn.” People always wonder how tough Rondo would be if he could consistently hit jumpers, and he showed why tonight. If the Spurs went under a screen, Rondo rose without hesitation. If he was open in transition, he pulled up smoothly. At one point Kevin McHale said Rondo’s jumper “looks beautiful,” and after thinking to myself, “I bet that’s the first time anyone ever said that without a double dose of sarcasm,” I thought, “Hell yeah, it does.”

But the shooting wasn’t the whole story. Hell, it was barely half the story. Rondo played 41 minutes, most of those with the ball in his hands, and turned the ball over zero times while dishing 14 assists. He made the right decision almost every time down the court. He chased down loose balls, and he chased down rebounds. He played downhill, attacked off screens, and hit KG and Glen Davis for wide open jumper after wide open jumper. I guess one night off was all he needed to get his head back on straight, or his body right, or to fix whatever the hell it was that was bothering him.

Paul Pierce was great, too, in a far more understated way. So were Kevin Garnett, Glen Davis and, for a brief stretch when Matt Bonner defended him, Jeff Green (the lesson, as always: if Rondo making jumpers is “coach’s porn,” being defended by Matt Bonner is “player’s porn”). Jermaine O’Neals return was a success, too. He didn’t have a huge statistical impact, but he competed and looked more advanced in his recovery than I expected. He’s another big body down the stretch, someone who can defend players who are able to shoot right over Davis (like Duncan did tonight).

Ray Allen wasn’t great, missing eight of his eleven shots, but–I swear—his movement off screens opened his teammates all game long. And Delonte West’s stat line won’t wow anyone, but he simply makes winning plays. Like the time he stripped Duncan down low. Or when he made a hard foul on Dajuan Blair to force him to make free throws. Or when he curled around a screen, penetrated into the paint and hit Allen for a dagger three.

Only one thing went truly wrong tonight: Nenad Krstic went down with what might be a torn ACL. The Celtics will find out more about Krstic’s injury Saturday, when he undergoes an MRI. For now, they should celebrate a win, and more importantly the return of Ubuntu. Maybe the Celtics will turn the switch off again tomorrow night. Maybe this type of performance was fleeting, rather than permanent. But the Celtics still have that 100-MPH fastball when they need it. And it was oh so beautiful to see.

I’m sorry, but I haven’t been blaming anyone but Ainge, and I still blame him. I’m glad we won tonight. We still have the Big Four, and Rondo is still the best player in the league when his head is in the game. I loved the game tonight. But The Trade still sucks, for so many reasons, starting with the fact that it was reckless and wrong to make a trade like that, in the heat of a championship stretch drive, basically just because you don’t want to have to negotiate with a key guy on your team. I’m sorry, but there is no way Ainge should still be here after this season, unless we win number 18. What he did was reckless and wrong and he should be gone.

I love your comparison to the first time hearing the Beatles! I remember my first time. I thought I’d never heard such exciting music. Couldn’t believe it. And yeah, these Celtics do have moments like that.

Re. Rondo’s turnovers: I’m not impressed by zero turnovers. I want to see turnovers, because I want to see him play aggressive and take chances. It’s like Rondo driving the lane and getting blocked by some hulking Big. You want that to happen from time to time, because you want him playing that aggressively. Still, I’ll take the zero turnovers. When it comes with 14 assists, well, that’s kinda beautiful…

What have you heard about Krstic? If he’s gone that hurts… it would be great with two O’Neils and one Krstic… this team can’t get healthy at the 5 spot.. it really tainted every thing tonight.

It doesn’t sound good. David Aldridge tweeted, “Nenad Krstic to have MRI Saturday; will not play Fri. Cs holding out hope it isn’t ACL tear.”

Krystic could help offensive in the playoffs.. he would be an asset if both Oneils are healthy… losing one of the 3 bigs hurts… especially when the two O’Neils are in a nursing home between games.

Krystic sucks but they could use him off the bench to give the ONeals some rest come playoff time, that is, if the Oneals are even playing in the playoffs.

Are the C’s truly jinxed this year with injuries? Or do they have to win without a steady center? Is that possible?

Will they bring back Chris Johnson from D-League? I love that skinny kid.

Yep…it appears they still know where the light-switch is and how to flip it on. Too bad the league is full of sub .500 teams otherwise the Cs would bring it every night. So everyone, you can relax again. Go Cs…

Chris Johnson has been signed by Portland.. i think it is Portland, but he is signed… i think with both Oneils healthy and Krstic they could win it all.. they can probably make a run with both Oneils playing well even without Krstic but having all three would be much better.. he can pull guys like Howard and Bynum away from the basket with his outside shooting. Plus without him the Oneils minutes have to go up and can they last till June?

If Krystic has a torn ACL then forget about him playing in the playoffs.

Ainge’s gamble with the trade only got worse. And WHY did he trade Erdin for a worthless draft pick?????

But at least the Cs won without Krystic against the Spurs (since he only played in the first half and contributed little)

Tonight they showed they can compete, yet the Spurs are down right now, and with all the injuries, we don’t know if the C’s can win a 7 game series against the Magic or Bulls, and especially the Lakers. Can the ONeals slow down Bynum and Gasol? Does that really seem realistic? KG and Big Baby can only do so much.

Tonight I will savor the win and try not to get my hopes to high with a battered team that just lost Perkins replacement.

You suck Danny Ainge. Go C’s.

James shame on you for even trying to suggest that JayKing remove Perk from the wall/header..What a fool you are. So since Red died we should we also stop talking about him and JayKing has to remove him from the header (not wall)! JayKing, you leaving Perk on your header shows Celtic pride and history and kids who will come to your blog 5-10 years down the road will ask who Perk is and it will be with pride that we’ll explain what he did for Celtics and why he’s not here anymore..Perkins cried when he was traded that’s how much he hated leaving so James, you are beginning to annoy the crap out of me each time you type here.. It would be diffrent if Perk left like Lebron James did but the guy left against his free will so how does it become a curse to remember him? If you want to leave this blog like you threatened to, go ahead but we know that you’ll be back sooner that you think..There no other Celtics blog out there that have Jay’s humor and this kind of community feeling..CelticsTown has ubuntu written all over it so we say “go out there and taste the waters then return to this Perk-Loving block when you ready.”

Anyway moving on to the subject at hand, it’s great that the Celtics pretty much showed up tonight and Rajon Rondo did a terrific job..I would still want to see more aggressive defensiveness from Rondo and some turnovers for taking gambles and flamboyant passes. 14 assists for Rondo, that’s some good news but I would rather he brings in 22 assists and have 14 points coz that would mean Ray Allen and Paul Pierce attempted more 3s. However at this point I’ll take whatever Rondo brought in last night. Did anyone see the Lakers play the mavericks last night? Their intensity made me fear for my new team Green and I wondered how Nenad would be ripped into shreds, of which he would…It’s a good thing he’s pretty much out of the picture to give room for baby or JO to start..Yes I said JO starting!!! Semir Erden would have helped had he stayed. By the way, why and who was Semir Erden traded for again? Someone please remind me! Arrrggg Ainge!!!!
Moving on to Ainge, shouldn’t we the fans be calling for his resignation. Am sure there is a way we could have a peaceful protest against how he has destroyed the team. Anyone interested in a demonstration for Ainge to resign?

Chisala…who the f*** are you to tell me what my opinions should or should not be?

KP is a member of the OKC thunder, not the Celtics. Thankfully, he is gone!!!

The ‘wall’ is composed of current Celtics and the architect of Celtic pride and championship heritage. Red died as a member/owner of the Celtics. Get your reality straight. Shaq is the starting Celtic center fo the Celtics not KP. It’s a f’in insult to the Celtics, the fans, us posters, and all of Celtic nation that KP is still up. And you want him there “5-10 years for Celtic pride”. Are you nuts??? One more day is too much. He doesn’t deserve anything more than thanks and good luck in his career.

Here are the stats from 2008 NBA Finals and just look at KP’s vs Leon Powe’s #s and you will see that in less minutes (KP 92 – LP 53) Leon outplayed your great Celtic center and had 1 more rebound in 39 less miunutes. Leon averaged 6.2/3.2 and KP averaged 4.0/3.2.

But you want KP on the wall forever more??? Why not Leon/Posey/PJ Brown who all had better stats than KP???

    http://www.basketball-reference.com/playoffs/NBA_2008_finals.html

Chisala…your knowledge of hoops, and especially Celtic hoops history, needs a lot of work so do us all a favor and please stop with the KP is a Celtic god talk because frankly I’m even more glad he is gone especially because of your inane comments. Go Cs…

I was encouraged by Jeff Green last night. He actually looked aggressive here and there — and I thought JO moved more crisply than he had in the few games he played earlier in the year.
