Will the Celtics win the Eastern Conference? I’m still confident

(Editor’s note: I am visiting my buddy tonight who’s on two-week leave from the Peace Corps. Thus, there will be no recap tonight. I apologize in advance.)

One day, the boys from the Hangover were celebrating a bachelor’s party. The next, a naked Asian man was trapped in their trunk, Mike Tyson (and his tiger) were their enemies, Stu had married a whore, Doug was lost on top of a roof, the police were after them for stealing a cruiser, and Fat Jesus—err, Alan—had taken a stun gun to the nuts.

A lot can change in a day, especially if you accidentally ingest a dosage of Roofies. But my choice for Eastern Conference favorite isn’t one of those things. Even before yesterday, when the Celtics were mired in a “damn, they just lost seven out of 12 games” stretch, I believed the Celtics would win the Eastern Conference. I’m not just a helpless homer who believes in his team whatever the situation, either—okay, maybe I am. But I’ve got some reasons for still believing in the Celtics, despite the recent run of play that’s been uglier than a Ben Wallace free throw.

Some real reasons.

1) Derrick Rose has never won a playoff series.

Not a single one. I know he’s been spectacular this season. I know he’s (probably) going to win the MVP. I know the Bulls have looked terrific, Tom Thibodeau could devise a defense that would stop the Original Dream Team  from scoring 100 points, Chicago will almost certainly have home-court advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs, and Carlos Boozer, Joakim Noah and Luol Deng make one hell of a supporting ensemble. I am well aware of each of these facts.

But there’s a pecking order in the NBA. Experience matters. Just ask Lebron James, who’s still searching for his first title despite winning the regular season the past two seasons. Just ask Michael Jordan, who lost to the Detroit Pistons in three straight postseasons before finally learning how to get past them. There’s a postseason learning curve that keeps young stars from winning titles. Think about it; who’s the last young star to win a title? You could say Dwyane Wade, but he also had Shaq. Tim Duncan in ’99, but he also had David Robinson. And before that? Magic Johnson, but he had Kareem. If you want to go back to the last young star who won a championship without a superstar sidekick, it’s Larry Bird in ’81. His supporting cast included young Kevin McHale, young Robert Parish, Cedric Maxwell, and Tiny Archibald.

The ’08 Celtics didn’t need to become playoff seasoned, but they were the odd exception. They threw three veterans together who A) were in the perfect stages of their careers, where nothing but a title mattered, B) fit perfectly together on the court (this should not be overlooked), with Pierce slashing, Allen spotting up, and Garnett working the high-low game, and C) had little competition. Don’t believe me? Check out Boston’s playoff foes: the Hawks sucked, the Cavs were “Lebron and the pu-pu platter,” the Pistons were slightly over the hill, and the Lakers were in their first playoff run themselves, and also missing Andrew Bynum. I don’t mean to put an asterisk next to Boston’s title. Not at all. But if you think ’08 had the same quality of play that this year does, you’re crazier than Ron Artest (and also crazier than whoever nominated Ron Artest for a citizenship award).

All that said, if you think I’m pissing my pants about the thought of playing Chicago in Chicago, you’d be correct. Consider me Miles Davis. Although thinking “Keith Bogans, starter” helps me out.

2) The Heat just don’t fit.

There’s no other way to put this. Are they capable of winning games in the playoffs? Yes. Does the thought of having to beat Dwyane Wade and Lebron James, at the same time, strike the fear of God in me? Yes. But they just don’t fit, for a number of reasons.

Here’s what I wrote back in November:

There is something beautiful about the way Boston’s Big Three complement each other. Allen’s the shooter, Pierce the slasher, and Garnett the mid-range shooter, defensive menace, noted trash talker and occasional post threat. From day one, they developed a synergy. Together, they are greater than they ever could have been alone. Their games thrive off each other’s. Not just because they are willing to put egos aside, either. Because their talents mesh almost perfectly. Pierce’s slashing makes it easier for Allen and Garnett to find space; Allen’s shooting enables Pierce’s slashing; Garnett’s basketball IQ and unselfishness allows it all to flow. Boston’s Big Three is a match made in basketball heaven.

Is Miami’s? Not in a conventional sense, at least. James and Wade thrive in pick-and-rolls, but neither are pure shooters. Wade’s talents aren’t utilized when spotting up in the corner while LeBron runs the pick-and-roll, and vice versa. Basically, when one has the ball the other might as well pick his nose on the other side of the court. So far, James and Wade don’t make each other better. They don’t make the game any easier for themselves. The only places the new duo really thrives, right now, are on defense and the fast break. But fast break opportunities, even for these guys, are tough to come by.

Months later, none of those concerns have been alleviated. I have never once looked at Wade and Lebron and thought, “Wow, they make things easy for each other.” Not once. Sure, they make some (okay, a lot of) highlight plays. Sure, they’ve won some (okay, a lot of) games. Sure, the thought of needing to win four games against two of the NBA’s top five players (and Chris Bosh) still petrifies me (if not as much as beating the Bulls does). But when the playoffs become a grind-it-out, half-court game (and it will), do the Heat have enough chemistry and teamwork to win the tight games?

I don’t think so. And I haven’t even mentioned the thought of Mike Bibby and Mario Chalmers defending Rajon Rondo for seven games, or that Erick Dampier—in the year 2011—is starting for a contender.

3) Ryan Anderson, Brandon Bass, Earl Clark, Daniel Orton and Malik Allen are Orlando’s only non-Dwight big men.

Need I elaborate?

4) The Celtics have owned their Eastern Conference foes.

The Celtics have played exceedingly well against their best competition this year. The only contender the Celtics have a losing record against is Dallas, and if last night was any indication, Dallas won’t be making the Finals. No matter how well Dirk has been playing, no matter how good that defense has looked at times, it’s tough to beat the Lakers when Jason Kidd has to spend significant time defending Kobe. It just is.

And in the East? Boston’s even better. They’re 7-2 against the top contenders (I’m including Orlando, just in case), including 3-0 against Miami, 2-1 against Chicago, and 2-1 against Orlando. Without Kendrick Perkins in the lineup, since that matters now, the Celtics are 5-2 against those teams. If you add Atlanta, Philadelphia and the Knicks, the Celtics are 14-3 against the Eastern Conference’s six other best teams. That’s pretty damn good.

5) I need to add caveats, because they exist.

I know Shaq hasn’t played in 15 months. I know thinking about relying on Shaq and Jermaine O’Neal to play 20+ healthy games in the playoffs gives me an ulcer. I know Rajon Rondo has looked bad, Paul Pierce hasn’t shot well, and Ray Allen is suddenly slumping for the first time this year. I know the Celtics haven’t consistently played to their capabilities in a few weeks, and I know losing to the Bobcats (who were missing Stephen Jackson and Tyrus Thomas, mind you) does nothing to inspire confidence. I know winning the Eastern Conference championship on the road (part two) will be grueling.

(Note: fuck, that’s a long list of caveats.)

All that said: as the Celtics showed last night, they’ve still got the 100-MPH heater when they need it. In a tough but flawed Eastern Conference, that will be enough.

I think.

I hope.

Please don’t blame me if this entire column turns into a jinx.

If they run the table with these last 8 games they’ll have the h.c. adv. So the question is… do they care enough to give the focused effort of the Spurs game to these next 8??? Tonight will tell a lot. Go Cs…

P.S. The jinx is KP on the Celtic Town wall.

Sadly, even if they run the table, they might not get home court. The Bulls are two games up and have a pretty weak schedule the rest of the way.

James, if he had Larry Bird on the wall, would that be a jinx? Perk won a championship with this team; let him be remembered as a champ.

    GO C’S

Jay… they beat Chicago they’re 1 down and they have the tie-breaker. Why can’t Chicago lose a game or two?

Chris H….Bird retired a Celtic. Read my previous post, in the Spurs recap, about Leon/Posey/PJ Brown and why they deserve the wall more than KP. There is no good argument or reason to have KP on a Celtic wall when in fact he is not a Celtic. By your logic Eddie House and Tony Allen should be up there, too??? And why not G. Davis as he was on that team too? KP is remembered as a champ and I am thankful for his time as a Celtic, but I thought the wall was for the current starters? If not my mistake. Go Cs…

James, okay, so maybe it’s a matter of doing the artwork, pasting and clipping, which is a pain in the ass if you’re ever designed a web page. Jay? When is KP coming down?

I just watched the Association on ESPN. Have you guys seen it? It truly shows the impact of the Trade (yes I’m still talking about it).

With Krystic injured, can anyone argue it was a good trade? Is Green that good off the bench? And does anyone know if there are any D League centers available? Doc says he wants more big people, but where are we going to get them? Anyone in Europe? Does Gasol have any more goofy brothers? Does Bill Walton have any more goofy sons (but taller)?

If Shaq is still hobbled, he may as well continue resting; it would be pointless to injur him worse right before the playoffs.

Jermaine (admittedly) looked to be moving well yesterday, something that surprised me. If only he can stay healthy for 30 Plus games.

So much for Rasheed coming out of retirement, thank goodness.

Chris H…Jay said about 2 weeks ago he was being lazy and needed to use Photoshop, etc. Can’t be that hard. And I understand the sentimentality but he’s been gone a month and we need to focus on the team we have. The trade is still great even if NK has a torn ACL because we had no offense off the bench before. Nobody before could get 15 pts in 10 mins or less like JG can. Now we have a better and stronger bench. And JG was praised for his defense last night. He just needs to rebound a whole lot better.

We’re going to be fine because Shaq will return and JO and he will plug the middle and the other starters know they can flip the switch. It’s just how they roll. Go Cs…

Pathetic effort against the Hawks tonight in the second half. I watched the C’s, then caught the second half of the Lakers later in the night. Complete opposites. The C’s look disbanded and tired whereas the Lakers look like a championship team that is revving its engines hard for the playoffs.

Short of a miracle, the C’s will not get the chance for a rematch. And if they do, can the ONeals really match up against Bynum and Gasol? Can Big Baby and KG?

And James: Since you support the trade so much due to Green coming off the bench, why is Green playing fewer minutes already? He was horrible against the Hawks. And few minutes means he’s not giving relief to PP and RA, which is what Ainge supposedly wanted from the trade. Green has shown tremendous potential, but he’s not going to be the savior off the bench to carry them in crunch time.

If the C’s are truly too tired to win back to back games, then maybe they really are too old to compete for a championship. The Lakers played last night, yet still brought it against Utah on the road tonight. What really sucks is that I live here in Smogtown, and I’m going to have to endure another frigging parade. (Unless the Basketball Gods stop pissing on the C’s with injuries and help them pull off a miracle)

Go C’s, as frustrated as I am.

Chris H…ask Doc as he is the one that decides who plays. I agree he should be playing more so the other two can rest but when you dig a hole because you only score 16 pts (Q3) & 15 pts (Q4) in the 2nd half but the same amount in the 2nd qtr (31 pts) then Doc feels (ergo = insists on) he has to play the starters, which is wrong I believe. A guy like Green should get more minutes in a back-to-back, not less. But Doc is stubborn and plays the same old moves even when they are obviously not working. Getting out-rebounded by 14 and giving up 14 offensive rebounds says it all. No defensive rebounding last night and terrible shot selection by RR at the 69 pt mark where he goes 3 straight times to the hoop with no one else touching the ball. He scored once in those three efforts and the momentum swung to the Hawks. Go Cs…learn to rebound please.

Hey guys, everyone forgets that Shaq and JO were supposed to HELP perk.. that’s how we beat the Lakers.. they were never meant to be our main centers… they were supposed to hold down the fort till Perk came back, then come off the bench to help us size wise

Now we’re depending on two old guys that aren’t even to give more then twenty minutes… Ainge thought Jeff Green was Kevin Durant… he looks like an inconsistent role player.. i know he will get better with a training camp, but that’s just it… it killed the rest of THIS year… i think the core four know it’s over

Frank: Yes, I remember before the season started, the team was saying that the ONeals were to BACK UP Perkins and give some “added help” to the rebounding problem they faced in game 7.

James: Agreed, Green needs more minutes, as does Wafer, and even Arroyo, guys who could have given a tired team a boost last night.

I thought Doc was the best coach in the NBA last year, until I realized the real talent on that staff is now coaching Chicago, the number one seed in the East.

Can the C’s start rebounding come playoff time? I’m not sure if that is a switch that can be turned on or off; it’s a habit, a practice, a discipline, a style of play. If they can’t rebound, they can’t win, and it’s getting very tiring seeing them give up so many offensive boards, night after night.

The bigger question arises: Where is their pride? In the 3rd Q last night, they should have pulled away by 20 or more points and buried the Hawks.

I still believe, despite their recent struggle, that they will be the eastern conf. champs. I think that the Celtics are still the best team in the NBA (yes, you heard me), and that they will prove it come playoff time. All we need is the players to return, and that is exactly what Doc is focused about, just like he was last year.
When healthy, the Celtics can win wherever, whenever and however.

The Celtics are an old, tired team. Yes, they still are the best, on a one game basis, when they really get motivated and pull it together. But winning a championship means winning one grueling series after another, not just one game. So are we gonna do that with no defensive anchor and our team cohesion suffering? Ridiculous. Just ridiculous.

And what amazes me even more about all this pollyanna crap is that Celtics fans and writers are willing to indulge in so much delusion just to justify a trade that they should be angry about. And too, I’m shocked at the sneering disdain Celtics fans and writers apparently have for other teams. Derrick Rose is not Lebron, and Thibodeau is not your average coach, and that should be perfectly obvious. Rose is an amazing clutch player, reminiscent of Koby. Oh, but wait, supposedly, according to the ‘serious people’, Koby isn’t a clutch player after all. !!

So, whatever. You are right. It’s a brave new world. Defense doesn’t matter. Team cohesion has an on/off button. Shaq will make us forget Perk. Delonte West can start over Rondo if the scrub doesn’t ‘get his head together’. Most importantly, if anything goes wrong, BLAME IT ON THE PLAYERS.

paul…they weren’t “an old, tired team” vs the Spurs. They just think all they have to do is show up vs inferior teams to win and that’s when they play like crap, like last night. The fact is that RA and JG played 60 minutes and got ZERO rebounds. They give up 14 offensive rebs and get out rebounded by that same number after leading in rebs at the half. They started taking stupid shots, playing one on one, and missed way too many FTs. And then there’s Doc lack of use of the bench in a back-to-back game. If the ‘old’ players are tired, which I do not buy as the core 3 (KG/PP/RA) and JO shot 17/34 or better than the ‘younger’ players and rebounded pretty good except for RA (KG – 10 and PP- 8) then they should be rested in this type of game. Doc doesn’t do that. I think GD & JG should get more than 5 rebs (all GD’s) in 48 minutes of play. And they are the young guys that need to flourish in this type of game. JG only got 23 minutes and he needs more. He’s also here to spell PP & RA. And why did KG only get 27 minutes? He was playing great and had only 2 fouls. I think you can lay this loss on Doc as his subbing sucked. The players played terrible in the 2nd half and that is more of RR falling back into his bad habits (only 5 assists and 0 steals) taking really poor shots at the most inopportune times which led to runs by the Hawks. Just an ugly performance all around. Go Cs…

James, agreed with your comments. Not only did Doc not rotate players wisely, he never got control of his team when it started spinning out of control, something you see Van Gundy do with his Magic team. Remember Christmas Day? The C’s were clearly outcoached that day, blowing a fourth quarter lead to Orlando.

How many times do we see the C’s go to sleep when they should be putting games away? Once in a while it happens to all NBA teams, but when it happens time and time again, I have to look to the coach.

@Fisken, yes the C’s are the best team when healthy, but they are not healthy, and won’t be healthy anytime in the months to come. How many times must we repeat: Shaq and Jermaine cannot be counted on during playoff time.

And with Krystic likely being out for the rest of the season, it turns out that Ainge basically gave Perkins away for Green, an inconsistent player off the bench (who Doc “hasn’t figured out how to use” (his own words).
