Bill Walker: Celtics have nine lives

Bill Walker knew not to expect the regular season Celtics. No matter what Boston looked like during their end-of-season funk, he knew, they would become gladiators come playoff time. (ESPN Boston)

“Those guys have got nine lives,” Walker said of his ex-mates. “It seemed like every time we got them down, or made a run, they always had another trick up their sleeve.

“You see them on film and they look like they’re old and slow, until you get out there and they’ve got a 7-foot-1 power forward [Garnett] who is more mobile than you think and a point guard [Rondo] who is an emerging superstar and two guys [Pierce and Allen] who never miss big shots. Then you’ve got JO [O'Neal], who wants to win so badly, and then you realize, they’re hungry.”

They’re hungry. And damn talented. And damn experienced. Miami, the Celtics are coming for you.

I don’t think defeating Miami is going to be a walk in the park. We can do it, IF we play our game and keep it up. What happened in the last Knicks game should wake us up a little. This is a team that can turn from juggernaut to ‘how are they even here?’ in a minute. They let up on the Knicks for just a few minutes, and next thing they knew, a 20 point lead was a 4 point lead. Think what Miami can do when we stop playing our game.

We can win. But this won’t be easy. And an awful lot still depends on Rondo. Will he continue to play great, perhaps even rise higher? Or will we get that Rondo we saw against Miami and Chicago two weeks ago?

Well, we just have to wait and see. Walker said they are hungry, that doesn’t mean they will get full, but we should hope they will. Good thing is they’re not satisfied, and that can mean only one thing, continue to progress. And yes, it won’t be easy, but as harder as it gets, it can only be sweeter.
