Davis: “I feel like our bench is way stronger than [Miami's]“

After Boston’s bench performed like a fish out of water during round one, Glen Davis spoke out on behalf of his second unit. During Boston’s two days off, Davis had taken it easy, “chilled,” met penguins and fed seals. No, that’s not some kind of weird fat joke. He really did. But when the team reconvened today, Davis preached the importance of Boston’s depth.

“I feel like our bench is way stronger than [Miami's],” Davis told ESPN Boston. “We’re way deeper than them. We’ve just got to make sure that we use our depth.”

Ahh, “we’ve just got to make sure that we use our depth.” Indeed, on paper the Davis-Delonte-West-Jeff Green-Nenad Krstic quartet should significantly outperform Miami’s “James Jones-Joel Anthony-Mario Chalmers-and-let’s pray Dwyane Wade and Lebron James play 45 minutes” unit. But the Celtics also should have had a big advantage against New York’s thinner-than-Tayshaun-Prince bench, especially after New York had been hurt by injuries. Sadly, you already know how that went.

Boston’s second unit has the talent, we know. But using that talent to make a positive impact has proven to be troublesome. Thankfully, the Celtics afforded themselves quite a bit of practice time by sending New York to an early vacation.

“I told you all year, the opponent’s been us,” said Rivers. “So we get a chance to work on our stuff, very similar to training camp. When you’re starting training camp, you really don’t have an opponent, you really just trying to work on all your stuff. We have an opportunity to do that with us, so that’s good.”

Ideally, Boston wouldn’t need a training camp of sorts at this juncture of the season. But the bench needs to mesh, and this extra practice time could prove essential. It’s time the on-court product starts to match the paper promise.

    I find a comment like this …

… stunningly disingenuous. Yes, ideally, Ainge wouldn’t have reset the team to preseason with a month to go before the playoffs. But he did.

I just hope Rondo is working with Green a lot right now. Got to get those two guys onto the same page. GOT TO.

It would certainly help too if Doc would actually use the bench more than he did in the NY series. Sometimes you just have to trust the players. I don’t like the core 4 playing 45 minutes every night even with time off between games. Other teams use their benches so why won’t Doc use his more??? Go Cs….

The core 4 don’t play 45 minutes… i would like to see more of Green with Rondo KG and either Allen or Pierce. Put him in a line up that would make him the 3rd option

It was an exaggeration Frank. And you’re right about seeing the mix changed up. But I’d also like to see Murphy, VW and CA or whoever is on that night’s roster. Go Cs…

Russell Westbrook made me appreciate Rondo a lot more tonight. Sometimes, he just doesn’t seem to like giving the ball up to Durant that much.

Delonte West is apparently losing his identity, the hustle and aggressiveness is not there, Glen Davis is having some playoff bugs, Jeff Green is his own worst nightmare, its hard to know what his identity is within the team, is he a post guy, jump shooting guy, we all know his versatility, but right now everyone in Boston plays a role and has an identity, Green needs to establish his. Nenad is doing okay considering the number of minutes he is given. Overall the Boston bench will be better in th Miami match-up. Having the Diesel would be nice though

Paul… I agree. There was one play in the last two minutes( I want to say it was after they reviewed to see if it went off of K-Mart or not) where Russel Westbrook got the ball on the elbow behind the three point line and he looked like he was goin to shoot it, and like he wanted to shoot it, but almost reluctantly he passed it to Durant. I’ve noticed that when they lost on Monday, Westbrook was shooting the ball a lot more than Durant when clearly Durant is the better player; and sure as hell the better closer.

I think Arroyo might deserve some burn especially against his old crew. Murphy’s rebounding (if he is still decent at that) couldn’t hurt and Wafer was really putting together some good games (better than Nate) before the injury, I think he’d be great to stretch the floor and give the bench some rest. I hate him on Lebron James but not as much on Dwayne Wade or whomever their backup SG is. I believe we’ll see Shaq this series my prediction is by Game 2.
