Miami Blues: Boston Celtics Jones’ing for better days

So much went wrong for the Boston Celtics, beginning with Dwyane Wade’s brilliance and including a laundry list of other items.

Rajon Rondo endured early foul trouble and never found his rhythm, never controlled the game the way Boston needed him to. Paul Pierce was ejected, after losing his cool one time, after being in the wrong place at the wrong time another, after playing the role of chameleon for most of the night and blending into the background at a time the Celtics needed far more. The bench was not magically cured of its shortcomings, nor did Jeff Green suddenly become the player Danny Ainge compared to James Posey, nor did the refs handle the magnitude of the game, nor did the Celtics care to contest James Jones’ wide open three-pointers. And the Heat? They were good. Really, really good.

After the game, Doc Rivers complained that his team made itself easy to defend. His point being that the Celtics didn’t move the ball from side to side or execute the way he drew it up. To illustrate Doc’s point, the Celtics shot only 42.7% from the field, a number that would have been worse if Ray Allen had shot darts directed by the hand of Jesus. Because almost nothing Boston did came easy. Only during brief spans did Boston’s offense look efficient, and even then, Miami came equipped with an answer on the other end. Many times Boston challenged to cut the lead. Every time, the Heat got stops and made a bucket of their own.

It wasn’t that Boston’s defense was bad as a whole. It wasn’t. Wade hit some superstar shots, indeed, but for the most part Boston forced tough jump shots and limited second-chance opportunities. Boston’s defense was actually pretty good. Except, you know, for a number of “let’s just leave James Jones open and pray he misses” snafus.

Suffice it to say, if Jones scores 25 points each night, the Heat will prove difficult to defeat. An easy excuse for Jones’ easy looks would be that Boston spent too much effort helping on Wade and James. But after watching each of Jones’ shot attempts, most of them had nothing to do with allotting too much man-power to the superstars. I could pick many brain farts the Celtics made on Jones today, but I’ll choose the following example of Jeff Green’s nice defense. And when I say “Jeff Green’s nice defense,” I hope you know I’m saying it in the same tone I would use to say “Shaquille O’Neal’s terrific free throw form.”

I picked on Green (mostly because he was the most egregious defender, partially because I wanted to pick on Green), but there were many other culprits: Ray Allen, Delonte West, and, when the Heat went small, even Kevin Garnett. Boston’s defense on Jones was atypically lax, considering that he’s Miami’s primary outside threat. You don’t want James or Wade to hurt you, but the Heat are most dangerous when their role players impact the game.

The Celtics and Heat spent nine months training for this moment, nine months longing for the day when the two teams would meet and the games would mean something truly significant. The series was inevitable, two locomotive trains on the same track, two cars traveling different directions on the same side of the road. By virtue of Chicago’s surprising regular season, the series came a round earlier than expected. But the regular season only served to ferment a mutual dislike, one that began in past postseasons and has grown steadily and exponentially during the past year. Now we can reasonably call the dislike hatred, the escalation of the teams’ differences culminating in Pierce’s ejection and a fierce, mixed martial arts feel to the second half.

The Heat were better today. Much better, even. But ask Paul Pierce: the Celtics, should they be defeated, won’t fall without firing a few rounds of ammunition themselves. These two teams don’t like each other, and they understand what’s at stake. Expect a steel cage match the rest of this series.

    Keys to the Game:
    Rondo in foul trouble
KG getting double teamed in the post
7 days off between games.Too much rust
J.O. needs to play at least 30 minutes if he can
The Celtics were making runs when they double teamed the ball handler at the top of the key.We must do this on every possession.
    James Jones
Jeff Green showed signs of life, but sucked on defense.Plays better at 4.
Don’t laugh, but Kristic is getting better at defense, but still a liability
The game was won by the Refs.David Stern is a scumbag.
32 To 18 free throw attempt disparity.
Who in the hell gets thrown out a playoff game for talking trash.
Rondo picked up a cheap no call and so did JO
Let Lebron and Wade get theirs in isolation and shut down everyone else
KG won’t get double teamed once Shaq returns.
KG can easily shut down Bosh
Decent job on the boards tonight, limit turnovers and move the ball and we should be fine.
Played poorly and were without Rondo for the third quarter and still kept it close.
    Must win game 2.
    That is all

I seriously want the Celtics to win. I love em. That said, I believe they are going to lose this series because Stern wants the storyline:
” LeBRON revenges disastrous loss from last years playoffs to stun Celtics”
This series will go seven. Miami will win by less than ten in the last game.
    Because of the damn refs.
    And Stern.

I believe the Cs will overcome everything, even the Heat refs, and fix the things that ‘kennard’ pointed out. Their ability to stop Miami and make runs shows they have what it takes. Now they just need RR for a full game and play JO more as he was a difference maker despite some of the really cheap fouls he was called for. and PP is not a happy camper and the Heat are going to have to deal with that on Tuesday. Lastly, they were rusty from the week off. They play so much better every other day. Go Cs…

Home team always gets the calls, which is why the C’s should have fought harder in the regular season for a higher seed. That said, if the NBA is truly “coaching the refs” for ratings, then this series will go 7 games and the Heat will likely win, since the NBA would rather have Le Bron or Rose against Kobe in the Finals.

As much as I despise Stern, I truly hope that the NBA isn’t being completely orchestrated or we are all just fans of an elaborate puppet show.

But even so, a great team can overcome corrupt officials. But to do so, you can’t have all the turnovers, or missed free throws. You have to play a perfect game almost. Can the C’s do it? I actually have faith.

The refs were not kind to the C’s today, but they didn’t exactly play their game either. Give credit to Miami; they played great D and capitalized on C turnovers.

    GO C’S.

Good sign this could have been a blowout. Rondo had a plu minus of +7 thats pretty good.

I believe the celtics are a better team but damn Jeff GReen sucks alot. Any way we can get marquis daniels back or put wafer on the court any but green.

I dont understand why doc played the bench extended minutes in the second and why he keeps playing green when he keeps coming up short.

Wish we could get Quis back.

nate…Green actually played much better than Davis but he needs to rebound and just get minutes. I think he guarded LBJ pretty good too. The rust is off and we’ll see the full throttle 48 minute version of the Cs on Tuesday. If RR plays the 2nd qtr (only 1 minute) then we win. Go Cs…

I don’t understand why Rondo’s still just walking the ball up and letting the Heat get its defense set. In fact, it was so bad that Doc was seen lecturing Rondo about it on TV. He knows that when he pushes the ball the offensive gets into a rhythm. Wojnarowski wrote an article after the knicks series about how Rondo was back, how he carved the Knicks defense and was setting his eyes on Miami and could possibly be the difference maker. Please, Rondo, for the love of Christ be the LeBron killer-triple double machine that we saw in last year’s playoffs.
