Game Thread: Heat-Bulls
Sorry for the lack of posts the past few days, folks. I went to my friend’s college graduation this weekend, and unfortunately his internet worked about as well as Shaq’s Achilles. Thankfully, since this is the offseason, where the news is slower than Glen Davis’s metabolism, I didn’t miss much.
Almost nothing substantial happened in the Celtics world during my absence, except that my brother created a Tumblr website to assist Celtics Town. We haven’t decided exactly how we’re going to use it yet, but assume we’ll post links and videos and quotes and things like that.
Shifting gears, there’s a basketball game tonight. Derrick Rose (who believes the NBA has a serious performance-enhancing drug problem) will take his talents to South Beach with the intentions of re-gaining home court advantage. Lebron will try to continue re-making himself as “Mr. Clutch.” Carlos Boozer may or may not help the Chicago Bulls. Keith Bogans will waste space on one end of the court. Udonis Haslem will attempt to replicate his efforts from Game 2. And Chris Bosh, if the mood strikes him right, will scream until veins pop out of his neck.
Have at it in the comments section, folks.

Now i have a debate that may intrest James and Paul, as you guys brought up Rondo’s poor shooing:
I think Rondo is a good jump shooter. Hold the “your crazy” comments for a second and let me explain my reasoning.
Doc is a fairly knowledgable coach, we can all agree on that for the most part. So, if he knows that players defending Rondo will sag off of him like he has the plauge, why does he tell Rondo to take all of his open jump shots;because doc knows Rondo is a good shooter.
Have you guys ever heard of what some people(and i want to say a phyc. doctor told him) say about why Josh Smith sucks at free throws? Because it’s a mental thing. He (claims) is a good free throw shooter, but when he is in front of a few million people(if it was on tv for example) he can’t seem to make it consistenally. Because for whatever reason, it bothers him. Wether it’s the pressure or whatever itis. That’s why he claims he will never be a great free throw shooter.
If i haven’t lost you yet, back to Rondo. Think with the same logic in Josh Smiths case. Maybe Rondo is actually a decent free throw shooter and jump shooter, but he can’t preform like that in front of millions of people. I think it makes complete sense. In theroy of course.
Your thoughts James and Paul? And others of course, but i was trying to figure out something for these to to debate, as Paul recomended.
And Rondo doesn’t do all of the shooting you two are telling him to do because he knows no matter if he shoots a few million shots every day, he will never improve dramatically. Because it’s all in his head.
I’m a decent jump shooter myself, but when i get on the court, i can’t make a damn jump shot. Which, is what lead me to this…..theroy.

Nick…By chance I went to my local outdoor court yesterday to shoot and work on my game as I hope to once again play serious hoops in a gym or at a Y; a long story I’ll not get into. That said I always start by shooting 5-10 ft and then work my way out to the three (and deep NBA 3 range – hey I love to jack it and have always had an excellent eye and shot from anywhere on the court; truthfully a bit of a gunner but when they are not dropping I know to stop shooting and help in other ways, with picks, rebounding, posting, blocking out, movement, passing etc.). One aspect of my warmup is to shoot bank shots and also from the same spots (fav is a turnaround jumper at the elbow as the line is always the ‘clear’ line in one-one or two-two games and I just go past the line, turn, and fire). Old enough to know the value of spot repetition and those bank shots. Then I always close each session by shooting 100 fts. Now I live in Sac. and there seems to always be a breeze to slight gale and shooting outside sucks but it’s all I got and I usually make in the 70s (very loose playground rims don’t help either). I bring all this up to address what I think RR should do this off-season, besides shoot 500 jumpers and 500 fts every other day. Everyday is too much and I think an other day scenario allows some rest. Since you mention players dropping off of RR I think he should float to either side about half-way between the baseline and top of the key so he could use a bank shot. Obviously, you understand shooting and a bank shot is easier than dead on, and I would think even players that freeze or have trouble shooting with crowds would be well served to add this shot to their arsenal. That way he would be shooting at a specific target (the box) and with his rebounding prowess I would imagine he could easily cover his misses since rebounds off bank shots usually come off on the player’s side of the court. And given his driving ability, and use of floaters and obviously bank shots off the glass as he has shown, together with his speed it would allow him to pull up and be able to clear his man for a short bank shot. He could be deadly doing this as he drives so much to the hoop. I am not sure about RR’s mental state or if he has problems shooting in front of the crowds. He seems OK so maybe his shot needs a lit more arc? It’s weird thinking about shooting and trying to describe it when all I’ve ever done is to do it. I do know that practice is essential. I will say that his shot seems to be improving and let’s hope he does a lot of work this summer.
Just found this critique about his shot and it seems dead on. Kind of why I suggested he use the bank shot more as the ball has to go to the basic same place every time in order to work.

Just some thoughts to toss out there. Even if he could make only 2 more per game I think that would give other teams cause and then they would be forced to change their defense and have to guard him closer thereby allowing him to use his speed and Rondo tricks to get to the hoop. Go Cs…Bulls better shoot better and foul less or they’ll lose tonight. Where’s my buddy, paul???

Yeah… Where is Paul?
I agree with everything you said. I’ve always loved that bank shot for the same reason; it goes in the same place everytime. When you get hot shooting bank shots it seems like you’re never going to miss. I also like your rouine you do. If he were to do what you do, maybe on the off day he could just practice shooting but in no specific order. I 100% like your ideas. I believe, unless he is just afraid of shooting in front of crowds, that that would help his shot a great deal. Once he gets that down, next summer he could start the three point shot. Or slowly make his way back that way. I’m getting a litlle ahead of myself, being that he struggles to hit that mid-range shot consistently, but he would be arguably the best Player In the entire NBA if he could have a lethal jump shot.

Also, as I read the first part of the link you posted, I realized something else. If Rondo’s jump shot could be much improved, it would help he entire team, not just with Rondo’s scoring. Because as it says in one o the first sentences, Kobe Was playing free safety on Rondo in thefinals. It was clogging the middle. If Kobe had to stay with Rondo and had to worry about Rondo, rather than sag off, it would open more opportunities for the other four players on the court. (If the starting five was the same, with Shaq) It would effect Ray Allen greatly and KG and Shaq the most. I would think.
Anyway, just mere speculation.

Nick…It would definitely help the Cs offense if his shot improved even more so that defenders would be forced out on him. It would just open things more but give him the added advantages I mentioned. Maybe he should hang with Ray for some shooting sessions? Go Cs…

I’ve read about your post and i liked it so much. I really appreciate how you’ve gathered those information to share it with others. You made it a lot piece of cake to understand and you’ve discussed it brilliantly. Thanks for a great post.

Bulls win rebounding but lose game because of crappy shooting and apparently no one can guard Bosh. Noah and Korver in foul trouble and no bench scoring killed them. Go Bulls…get it together please! Go Cs…
