The reason Boston traded Semih Erden

On multiple occasions, I wrote about the most indefensible trade Danny Ainge made this year: no, not that one—Luke Harangody and Semih Erden for a second-round draft pick. Trading away a seven-footer with potential (and Harangody) just to open a roster spot for Sasha Pavlovic (and Carlos Arroyo) made as much sense as reading with a blindfold on.

But there was a reason for the trade after all: the Celtics feared Erden would return to Turkey after this season because of a bout with homesickness. (Boston Globe)

Apparently, the Celtics traded Semih Erden to Cleveland because they felt he would return to Europe anyway out of homesickness. The Cavaliers have yet to see what they have in Erden because of shoulder and groin surgeries and a lack of conditioning. The Celtics relayed to Cleveland that Erden needed shoulder surgery, but the groin issue is new. Erden played in just four games after being acquired from the Celtics Feb. 24.

With the Celtics big man situation currently “Kevin Garnett and whoever A) decides not to retire or B) re-signs for a smallish contract,” the Celtics could have used Erden next season. But if he’s going to return to Turkey anyway,  trading him for a basket of potato chips makes more sense in retrospect.

It’s too bad that we gave up Harangody as he proved to be a good rebounder and while he needs time to polish his game I think the Cs will regret letting him go; if they haven”t already. It just is so frustrating that we draft guys and then do not let them develop, then trade them to have them play well elsewhere (Walker for one with NY). Go Cs…

Although Walker, except for a few highlights here and there, hasn’t done much in his career.

He averaged 7/3 vs the Cs in the playoff series despite going 0-11 in one game (had 8 rebs in that game though) and is only 23. And when Melo showed up his minutes got cut almost in half. He averaged 12/3 and shot 52% in 2009-2010 once he was traded. But instead we get Sasha and Carlos instead of developing our own like Harangody. I’d rather see the players we drat stick around as they are going to learn under 4 HOFs and going against them every practice and being around them will only help improve their games as they garner more minutes. Hopefully, Doc will start giving Bradley minutes. If we’re going to peck in the regular season then why not give our rookies some of the vets minutes so they can develop? Go Cs…

I believe there was an article posted somewhere, maybe even here, about Erden having homesickness. Not that anybody made the suggestion that that was the reason for the trade, but Erden having some homesickness is nothing new. That being the reason for the trade is.

And to call the Erden trade the most indefensible is itself indefensible. What that trade was was an indication of how The Trade opened the floodgates of stupid in Danny’s mind. Again, it’s the gambler’s mentality. Having made the big screwup, might as well throw all the cards up in the air, just to muddy the waters, if for no other reason. And you bit hard on that bait.

And as you know, if you have a shred of sense, this supposed explanation doesn’t do any more to make sense of any of this. For one thing, it’s a transparent self-serving leak by Ainge, which should tell you that it’s part of a campaign of damage control. And homesickness is something everyone experiences. For the Celtics to just assume that there was no possible way to overcome Erden’s homesickness is … totally absurd.

You are just eating up all the propaganda, like everyone else. Danny had a manic episode or something. But rather than call it what it was, you and everyone else prefers to chug down the oceans of self-justifying propaganda flowing out of Celtics’ hq.

They effed up a damn good championship opportunity, perhaps the last one we’ll see for a long time, and we should all be ticked. But we’d rather just bliss out on the lies.
