Shaq plans to retire

Shaq plans to retire, the Big Diesel announced via Twitter today. Obviously, Shaq’s plan to earn his fifth title this season didn’t come true. By the time the Celtics reached the playoffs, Shaq’s best basketball was well behind him, and all that remained was a mountain who limped any time he moved. After nineteen years, his body finally told him he was finished.

The limp-plagued end should not and will not overshadow everything Shaq accomplished. The most dominant big man ever, Shaq was a force of nature the NBA had never seen before and might never see again. Long live Shaq.

Really sorry to see this day as I was hoping he could get better and play one more full year with the core 4. They really clicked early on but damn injuries wrecked it all. A great center and even better human being. So glad I got to enjoy his career, even with the Lakers, as his play was just pure dominance on all levels. One of the best ever! Go Cs…

“Best big man ever”? No. Top 5 all time? Yes. Best of his era? Yes. All time? No.

Shaq would have dominated Russell, Wilt and any other center because of his size and the agility he had using such size. It is different eras and it would have been great to see these guys in their prime go head to head, but it’s no contest. Really going to miss what he brought to the game. Go Cs…

James, Shaq didn’t always dominate the centers he DID face, so it’s QUITE a stretch to dominate centers who dominated in the past. Really, the notion that he would dominate Wilt or Russell is just the usual narcissism of the young. It’s like the old folks croaking ‘you shoulda seen so and so back in the day; they’d have dominated these kids today”, only it’s looking in the other direction. The old folks think no one can compare to the old timers, and the young folks think the old timers were just useless geezers.

But really, James, do you just drink up hype? ‘Cause every single thing you say sounds like you are regurgitating some hype.

I’ve always disliked Shaq. I’ve seen him as mainly a bigger and lazier version of Moses Malone. But he won me over this season. It wasn’t the publicity stunts. It was the way he seemed to embrace his diminished role with the team, making the most of it, just giving us all he had. I’ll never forget that game where he seemed to get mad that the rest of the team was allowing yet another team-we-should-beat to stay in the game, and he started throwing himself after loose balls, etc.. It was basically his last game, as I recall. I’m not ashamed to say that I was really moved by him doing that. He’s a legend, on the verge of retirement, and here he is diving after loose balls.

It’s not Shaq’s fault that Danny made the insane Trade and then basically used Shaq as a smokescreen, as cover, to distract us from panicking over the fact that we were basically heading into the playoffs with no real starting center, and with our team cohesion blown to hell.

Thanks Shaq. You helped make this year an unforgettable year.

hmmm, Celtics with no starting centre. I think Bogut would be great in the real green and would fit a dream with the big four. How do we get him to break that Buck’s contract ? Match made in heaven.

monta and biedrins for ray JO and bradley and all our draft picks this year lolll biedrins = horrible contract gs probably wants to get rid of him, JO+ray free up cap space, gs can go shopping for a big, bradley young guard with potential. monta to the celtics!

Chisala…typical dumb ‘I hate the trade’ statement. Guess you weren’t happy when the Cs were dominating early in the season before Shaq got hurt? Nobody can foresee injuries or re-injuries. This team was better with Shaq and all the stats (and their record – 19-3 when he played 30 mins) proved it. I guarantee if he was healthy you wouldn’t be spouting your sour grapes. Go Cs…
