Jeff Green: “I should have been more aggressive”

Jeff Green looks back on his short time in Boston with regrets. He should have played with more ferociousness. He could have made a serious difference to Boston’s second unit, but failed to stake his claim to games, failed to prove Danny Ainge right, failed to win over his new team’s fans, failed to make his mark in the Bay State.

“I should have been more aggressive when I look back on it now,” Green told ESPN 980 in Washington, DC (via CSNNE). “That’s what they brought me in for.”

NBA observers have been waiting for Green’s breakout year for years. He sweats talent, exhales versatility and very much looks the role of NBA stud. But he also plays with limited horsepower, an odd sense of indifference hovering over every move he makes and every rebound he does not grab. Some players can play hard without showing much emotion. Tim Duncan, for example, rarely ever pounds his chest or screams obscenities; his passion stays somewhere within, but it’s there. It’s hard to tell whether Green’s passion exists. His facial indifference to everything, his on-court expression that says, “I want to take a bath” more than it says, “I need this rebound desperately,” frustrates fans because it mirrors his play’s passivity.

“Being a young guy in this league,” said Green, “it’s tough coming in where you got Kevin [Garnett] on one side, Paul [Pierce], Ray [Allen], [Rajon] Rondo now who’s been with that team for a long time. It was tough for me to come in and be ‘the man,’ coming off the bench, it was tough. In my mind, I’m thinking, ‘Those guys preach, sharing the ball, sharing the ball.’ It was kind of, ‘You gotta be aggressive . . .’  but I didn’t want to step on anybody’s toes. Now I look back at it now, I should have taken it for a grain of salt and take my slice of the pie. I don’t think I did that when I came into that situation.”

The Celtics didn’t need Green to step into the starting lineup and outshine Pierce, Allen, Garnett and Rondo. They needed an anchor for their second unit, someone who would change games with energy and offensive prowess, and maybe even grab a rebound every once in a while. They got something else, something decidedly worse, something underwhelming if not disappointing.

Now, they need to decide whether to keep Green, and if so at what price. The question should keep Danny Ainge awake at night; though Green failed to impress during his short time in Boston, he still has talent. He’s still 6’9 and athletic, with an inside-outside game that should cause opponents all kinds of fits. You can still look at Jeff Green’s physique and movement and envision a star, even if his production doesn’t tell the same story a quick eye test does. For Ainge, the decision to re-sign Green could come down to more than just basketball. If he lets Green walk for nothing, Ainge will admit his midseason trade failed. Ainge will admit Green did not make the impact he expected. Ainge will admit Green was not the player he believed the Celtics were getting.

Hopefully, Ainge will not let his ego get in the way of making a solid basketball decision. That could mean re-signing Green and hoping he blossoms after a full training camp to adjust to his new teammates. That could mean letting Green walk and saving the money instead. Considering Green’s status as a restricted free agent (the new Collective Bargaining Agreement notwithstanding), Boston’s decision could very well come down to what other teams offer Green. The Celtics will reserve the right to match any offer.

At least he recognizes what’s wrong and that he deferred when playing with the stars. A good training camp with solid minutes and he could be that star off the bench that the Cs really need. If KG and PP give up some minutes, which they should or Doc should take, then I think the future will have the outcome we all expected when he arrived. Go Cs…

This sounds to me like excuses from a P R standpoint. Green played exactly the same as he has his whole career a third option tweener that doesn’t rebound.

You didn’t want to step on toes ok then why the lack of rebounding.

His agent told him to say everything toad for us celtics fans GM’s are really stubborn about mistakes and resign bad player out of pride.

Nate… The doubt was not if he could, more would he. There have been people like Kidd that let people know it’s all possible. But more merley a matter of would he develop a good jump shot. And, it would help more if he had one sooner than JK did.

Oh give me a BREAK, James!! Maybe you and other Desperate Danny Defenders expected great things from Green. Anyone who laid off the Kool Aide could see that Green had, so far in his career, proven out to be a very talented JOURNEYMAN. In fact, he’s a problem player, because his talent carves out a larger space for him on a team than his play justifies. This is precisely the problem that helped tie the Celtics in knots over the last two months of the season. I’ll give just one example of how it hurt us: bringing in Green seemed to have an immediate affect on Baby, who seemed to become more and more confused about his role. This is not hard to understand. When an immensely dramatic trade brought in a new guy who appeared to be primarily a scorer, and who appeared to be slotted for Baby’s sixth man spot, if not for more … how would you have responded if you were Baby? Of course, you’d be wondering what your role was, and if you should score more, etc..

Basically, Green takes up more room on a team than he fills.

Will he come around? Well, if this statement from him is any indication, I doubt it very much. As Nate points out, it doesn’t even make sense. It’s obvious propaganda, trying to say the right things. It doesn’t even make sense. He acts like he got confused because, while he now realizes that everyone expected him to outshine the big four, shoving them aside and grabbing his shots, he was too shy and deferential at the beginning, because he heard so much talk about team play!!! Come on, does that make any sense at all? Since when does team play equate to being deferential?

It means searching out the best shot, and if that’s your shot, then it’s you. Secondly, who on earth ever expected him to step in and somehow outstudify the Big Four? As far as I’m concerned, Green’s supposed epiphany doesn’t seem to be anything more than some incoherent excuse making.

And what’s the big mystery anyway? Where do people get this idea that just because you have some physical abilities and some skills that you should be a great player? Is that what makes greatness? It’s silly, isn’t it? I’d say it’s even insulting. Not every person with the ‘right body’ and the ‘right skills’ cares enough to be a big star, and WHY THE HECK SHOULD THEY?! Geez, there’s more to life than basketball. Maybe Jeff Green just doesn’t live and breath basketball enough. And why should he?

I just hope Green gives us a nice, productive year off the bench next year, and that Rivers plays the bench more.

paul…I guess you forget that DA actually drafted Green only 4 years ago? Then he traded him to get Ray Allen. So if the RA trade never happened Green would have been a Celtic from the start of his career. Without bringing up the ‘trade’ as we’ve beaten that dead horse to a bizzillion deaths answer me this – so how is it that Green who is still a young player being only 24 and having only 4 years in the league, while developing his skills and play whereby he averaged 15-16 pts and 6 rebs per game over the last two years starting for OKC (but getting major minutes each year – 36 average or so) is now considered a “journeyman”??? How do you come up with this stuff??? What kool-aid are you drinking? Is it the screw DA for everything he’s ever done to help the team get better but because of injuries (3 yrs in a row that cost at least 1 title and possibly 3) he sucks and the one title he got for us means nothing kool-aid? If so, get to rehab ASAP.

And to have the cojones to say that Davis was affected by Green’s presence is absolutely inane as Davis had problems from training camp on and if you remember (guess not) he questioned his role early in the season when his role has been the f’in same since he got here….rebound, defend, and then add offense. But of course he was confused , and still is, as he wants to start based on his stellar play this year and his awesome jump shooting abilities. Unfortunately for him the lack of rebounding, lack of taking charges, and lack of scoring equates to his taking a dump on his teammates, as it was obvious he was playing only for himself and for a FAT contract. Truth is, if he played as he has progressed then he would have earned that contract. Not now and maybe never.

That said, I agree with you that Green should be productive or get traded. He isn’t going to get 36 minutes a game but with 20 he should average 10-15 and get 6-8 boards nightly. That doesn’t make him a “great” player just an efficient one, as that was what we all expected. It’s so obvious that he deferred when playing with the core 4 and other HOF and all-star that he wasn’t used to in OKC where everyone is young and it was all run and gun offense and no f’in defense. Hopefully, with training camp and another half season he’ll figure it out and perform as promised.

I expect Green to improve significantly this season or again, get rid of him. Same for Davis, but he may already be on the way out. And you are certainly correct about wanting Doc to play the bench more. Green, Murphy, Wafer, Bradley all deserve quality minutes and hopefully RA will come off the bench and DW will start. So how this all equates to my drinking kool-aid please advise further as I don’t see it. Go Cs…

As I said, Mavs in 6! Congrats to Dirk, Jason, JET, Chandler and all the Mavs. Turns out, as we all know, teams win championships not individuals. I love that the Heat are going to have a miserable summer. As there’s no crying in basketball Chris Bosh…ever! Celtics need to play zone vs the Heat next season as they can’t handle zone defense. Get a rebounder or two, get healthy and we can be in the Finals next year. Lastly, Eddie House 9 pts but gave up at least 20 pts. Defense wins championships and Dallas figured it out and are now enjoying the title…well deserved. Go Cs…

Dallas can pretty much thank Danny Ainge for that championship. Oh, I know, we aren’t supposed to bring up The Trade anymore. The past is the past. Time to move on. It’s sooooooooo much more honorable to scapegoat Big Baby.

You keep putting out the propaganda, James. You and all the other Danny Defenders know darn well that WE should have been in the finals, THIS year. And now you are singing the praises of the “zone defense”. Wow. Before I believe you were arguing that the Celtics were too old and too unathletic to beat the Heat. Or maybe it was all the other Danny Defenders. The explanations why it was inevitable that we fall to the Heat just keep on morphing.

What a total, flaming crock. Dallas proved what we knew all along, what the Celtics themselves proved three times this year: a cohesive and focused TEAM effort, by smart experienced players, can beat the Heat. And we WERE that team until The Trade. Now we have Ainge crying in the wilderness “my kingdom for a center”, and we all like good little slaves pretend that we don’t even notice the screaming irony of it all.

An old and not-so-athletic team just beat the Heat, even though we were told by the Danny Defenders that that could never happen (even though we ourselves did it three times, in the pre-Trade era).

Keep spinning the propaganda Danny Defenders. You never really cared about a championship, did you? All you cared about was worshipping authority.

paul…there you go again putting words into my mouth. I NEVER, EVER said the Celtics “were too old and too unathletic to beat the Heat”. That’s just plain not true. The Celtics were more than capable of beating the Heat but injuries killed that opportunity. Nothing else. I loved our team all season, except when they did not perform as expected vs the sub .500 teams, not rebound, or didn’t guard the 3 line. I have been EXTREMELY consistent in all my posts so go back and read them if you don’t believe me.

I am singing the praises of the zone defense as it OBVIOUSLY worked in keeping the Heat’s interior offense stifled. Why not use something that works paul??? Is man-to-man or doubling (a terrible practice that the Cs do way to far from the hoop and they pay for it over and over) the only defensive sets to be used? I thought the goal is to win the title??? Use whatever works and Dallas exposed the Heat’s weakness playing against the zone. And yes, our ‘older’ team might just be better served at times playing that way. Nothing to lose trying it right?

And next to your comment re – “And we WERE that team until The Trade.” Sorry but again, in juries killed the Celtics chances not the f’in trade. Rondo’s injury was the worst as it ended his effectiveness. We still could have beat the Heat and likely Dallas if Rondo wasn’t hurt. But to again bring up the ‘trade’ and lay all blame on it is delusional as the team was playing well in the playoffs until Rondo’s injury. Not having Shaq either hurt as well and the Cs were playing their best with Shaq at center not Perk. Also MD was done for the year…AGAIN paul, IT WAS INJURIES THE DERAILED THE CELTICS IN 20011 (ALSO 2010 AND 2009).

Lastly, if you’re going to accuse me of propaganda then please get my propaganda correct. It’s the least you could do. And I am proud to be a “Danny Defender”!!! Go Cs….draft a wing and find another rebounder (besides Murphy who should get an opportunity to to just that)!!!

Despite his rough half with us I felt the same way as he did I knew he was holding back because he didn’t wanna make the other stars look bad…I know Jeff Green can do some amazing things for us and be a future superstar alongside Rondo and he will definitely prove it next season with no regards as to how bad it makes our aging superstars look…He’s hands down better than a lot of players that are already deemed superstars he just hasn’t had the platform to prove it…He’s always been a role player with handcuffs on him in Oklahoma and coming to Boston was worse due to a roster loaded with hall of famers…With him realizing he could have unleashed the beast within I’m 100% sure if he’s resigned with us he will be a monster for us next season.
