Ainge: Celtics will extend qualifying offer to Jeff Green this week

According to Danny Ainge, the Celtics will exercise Jeff Green’s contract option at some point this week. Because of Green’s status as a restricted free agent, the Celtics have until July 1 to extend a qualifying offer to him or allow him to become an unrestricted free agent.
Extending the qualifying offer does not automatically mean Green will play for the Celtics next season. Rather, it will give the Celtics an opportunity to match any contract offered to Green this summer. Green could also choose to play next season under Boston’s one-year tender (reportedly $5,908,640), after which he would become an unrestricted free agent.
Another option for the Celtics would be using Green in a sign-and-trade deal. This would allow the Celtics to receive assets in return for Green, preferably a capable player (or capable players) in the final year of his (or their) contract(s). Because Green played so fantastically for the Celtics last season, his trade value is at an all-time high.
Just kidding.
The Celtics could also elect to keep Green by re-signing him to a long-term contract. You know, if they’re gluttons for punishment and insist on compounding the mistake of trading for Green. Okay, so maybe re-signing Green wouldn’t quite be like self-inflicting Chinese water torture. I would still prefer spending the Celtics’ cap space on somebody who plays defense, occasionally rebounds the basketball, and did not spend the second half of last year murdering his own value. Call me crazy.

your crazy!
green knows how to play baskball there is a reason danny loves him so much, in a game that is getting smaller and more athletic you need versatile, exposive players to run the floor and guard 3/4s. It is impossible to get a perfect player but in the 6-7 to 6-10 range of sf/pf(lumar odem, outlaw) green has the most potential. I think danny should do the ray for josh smith trade and then sign and trade big baby for jr smith. ray cant play d lik he used to and agents wdade we need someone more athletic. immaturity is not a problem when you have kg and pp on your team and kg will specifically make josh smith live up to his potential and create an HOF out of him. with that roster we can compete this year and have a fast, explosive future in rondo, smith, and green. that new young core is one star and a few role players away from making real noise in the future, right?- so am I crazy?

I would love to see Green workout for the Celtics, but I love the idea of having Jeff as trade bait,or used in a trade to better the Celtics.

One year trial for Green would be perfect. I read David West is going to opt out and he’d be a great addition. Maybe use Davis in a sign and trade so he can go back to his home state. Go Cs….make some moves!!!

moshe…a little crazy as I have been advocating for Ray to be the sixth man and start DW with RR. Green’s got talent but he needs to show it ASAP or he can see the door. Go Cs…

I agree, a one-year trial would be perfect. Give him a chance to prove himself worthy of a long-term contract, pay him a reasonable amount of money, teach him the Celtic way, etc. But he’ll probably only accept the one-year tender if he receives no long-term offers from anybody. That’s unlikely.
Second-best option is a sign-and-trade. I hate the idea of spending a chunk of our cap space on Jeff Green.

Jay, you keep bringing up how dismal Green was on the C’s, and how bad he’s made his value on the trade market, yet you say that he’ll only take the C’s tender if he doesn’t get any other offers which is unlikely…wtf?
How is it he’s THAT BAD, yet he’s going to get some tremendous offers that will woo him away, and that’s of course AFTER the NBA lockout, and a new Hard Cap system install?
You’re not making sense Jay. Either admit that you’re just upset that Green wasn’t a 20-10 guy off the bench (no one is in 20 mins per game) or admit that there’s NO WAY anyone will give him a long term deal with big money. It’s one or the other Jay.

Okay, you’re crazy.
Jeff Green is one of the best athletes in the NBA. He plays tough D, runs the floor and is at his best in clutch situations. As an Oklahoma City Thunder follower, I can assure you we would go along with rescinding the original trade and take him back.
Seriously, I take it back about you being crazy. You just don’t understand the game very well, and that’s okay.
Hot debate. What do you think?

David, you lost me at “plays tough D.” Not sure who you’re confusing for Jeff Green.

i wish people would learn the game of basketball.
Green went from 37 minutes a game as a starter in OKC to 23.5 minutes a game as 7th or 8th man in Boston. comparing raw production when a guy’s minutes are literally cut by more than 1/3 is ridiculous.
LOOK AT GREEN’S ADJUSTED PER-36 MINUTE PRODUCTION, it is nearly IDENTICAL from OKC to Boston:
OKC: 14.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 1.8 apg…, 0.8 spg, 0.4 bpg, .437 FG, .304 3P, .818 FT
BOS: 14.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 1.1 apg, 0.8 spg, 0.9 bpg, .485 FG, .296 3P, .794 FT
he actually improved in 3 of 8 statistical categories [pts, blk, FG%], remained the same in 1 [stl], and had only marginal differences in the other in the other 4.
comparing a guy’s production based on drastically reduced minutes, a drastically reduced role, and learning a new system is foolish… compare efficiency and Jeff Green was just as good in Boston as he was in OKC. give the guy minutes instead of relegating him to 2nd or 3rd guy off the bench behind Davis and whatever other scrub Doc prefers to play instead of his long, athletic swingman and maybe the kid could live up to his potential.
or we could sit here and mope over Perk forcing a trade and compare raw numbers to make ourselves feel better about losing… whatever scapegoat floats your boat. yawn.

In the modern NBA under the new harder cap Green is not worth $6M per year as a bench player. I do not see him replacing PP as a starter in the near future. See what you can get in trade – sign and trade for a reliable back-up centre would be ideal
More importantly though if I have to choose between Green and Baby Davis for $6M I will take Green. OMG please don’t resign Davis for ore than a minimal amount. Short fat guys playing the fwd positions is never gonna work for more than a couple of minutes. If he can get better elsewhere then seeya

OK, there’s no ifs, ands or buts, you’re crazy. Green has all of the potential to become a real star in this league. I have followed him all the way from Georgetown and he’s been misused all of his NBA career, especially with OKC. He has still put up better numbers than anyone in his draft class not named Kevin Durant! He defers too much to other players and he is nothing but the ultimate team player. What he needs with the Celtics is more minutes and playing with the starting five. The C’s may not be able to keep him as he will be offered 9 to 10 million per year easy once the lockout ends.

No one will be handing out $9-$10 mil per year to the Jeff Green’s of the world after this lockout.
Try again.
Jeff Green is slightly better and more versatile, with more upside than Travis Outlaw. Outlaw got $7 mil from a desperate NJN team in a more cap friendly system than what will be there when Green get’s his next deal.
Green will be making a MAX of $7.5 mil anywhere he goes after the C’s (and I’d doubt he even get’s that), and if it’s short term…C’s will match it.
See Glen Davis for what happens to guys who underperform and then think they’ll cash in the next year as a RFA.
Thought he’d be making full MLE type money…ended up playing for $3 mil for 2 years.
Green will be in Green next year at $5.9 RFAT
