Glen Davis: “I want to keep playing with Ray and Paul until they leave”

A week ago, Glen Davis said he wants to go anywhere Glen Davis can be Glen Davis. At the time, he seemed like a goner. But his comments yesterday were a lot more level-headed and mature. He even told the Boston Herald he would like to return to the Boston Celtics. I’m not sure whether that means anything or he just finally decided to show some diplomacy.

Neither Davis nor Rivers publicly admit to having a problem, though Ainge said he wants the men to talk out their oft-emotional differences if they are to spend another season together.

If that opportunity arises, anyway.

Davis, at least, asserts that he wants to return.

“Man, I do,” Davis said yesterday. “Do you know how much I’ve grown and learned with those guys? I want to keep playing with Ray (Allen) and Paul (Pierce) until they leave.”

Maybe he meant to include Kevin Garnett. Maybe not.

During a chat with reporters, Davis discussed “adjusting my approach to food now.” He claims to recognize the need to change his lifestyle and also understands he needs to “eat for being healthy.” Not just because of basketball, either, although that would obviously become a beneficiary of Davis’s alleged health kick.

“I want to be with my kid forever,” Davis added of his 10-month-old daughter, Amari. “You can’t be 360 pounds and expect to play with your grandchildren. I have to be the player I can be.”

Davis said he just recently realized his own potential as a player, and wants to reach his ceiling. He has hired a sports psychologist, allegedly begun to diet, continued to work out as usual despite the likely lockout, and doesn’t actually hate Doc Rivers as much as it occasionally seems.

“Me and Doc have a good understanding,” [Davis] said. “My name’s Glen and his name’s Glenn. But Doc is Doc. I love the way he coaches. It’s just that me, as a player, didn’t adjust to him. When I first came here, my role was different than it is now. More importance on the team means more adjusting, and sometimes this year I had trouble with that. Mentally, it interrupted my game.

“So I got (the sports psychologist) because of the way I played in the postseason. It helps me to deal with Doc, and why I didn’t play well. Mentally it just became hard for me to see things. Just learn to be myself. I have to be in a zone all the time.”

Glen Davis’s summer is beginning to mirror his season. Ups and downs, peaks and valleys, times he makes me smile and times he makes me scratch my head.

Again, there’s nothing new here. Davis ‘shoots from the lip’, and he’s very up and down emotionally. The good thing about all this is that there seems to be a clear indication that he is taking steps to improve. It’s interesting that he’s now trying to make peace with Doc, while sending passive aggressive barbs at Rondo and KG. That’s ok. But I personally don’t want Doc to get off the hook here. Doc has become a truly TERRIBLE coach for anyone other than successful vet players, such as the Big Three and JO and Shaq. And that’s fine – not everybody can do everything – AS LONG AS HE BRINGS IN ASSISTANT COACHES WHO CAN TEACH AND MOTIVATE THE BENCH PLAYERS AND BIGS.

I don’t understand why people can’t read between the lines a little bit. What this situation with Davis is telling us is precisely that the Celtics have a coaching problem. That is what this whole drama is telling us. Not that Davis is an idiot, or a bad person, or a total loser, or whatever. It’s telling us that the Celtics do not have adequate coaching for the more marginal players, who, as Davis himself has made us – at times painfully, and at times joyfully – aware, are actually quite important.

There was some talk last year that Rivers’ attention to the team was not very focused, that his involvement with following his son’s burgeoning career took him away a lot. Maybe that’s the problem. And, again, it’s not a problem, as long as assistants are brought in to do what Rivers is not doing, or not able to do.

Finally, something intelligent from Davis. Maybe there is hope after-all? If this is what maturing for him is all about I am all for it because this guy can play and be very effective when FOCUSED. If he buys into what his new helpers are preaching then the wt will come off and his head will be better because his play will be better. This is potentially great news for the Cs and their chances next season to get banner #18.

paul…re the coaching situation – I have been the most consistent anti-Doc poster, for several years and not just in C-Town, but he just signed a new 5 yr deal so we are stuck with him. I honestly believe that cutting Clifford Ray loose was a major, major mistake and not hiring Thibodeau as the head coach as well. That said, hopefully we keep L. Frank around but I’d like to see some former Celtic assistants like Brian Shaw (who deserves a head coaching position) or others that have the Celtic mentality be hired. Maybe bring in some of the retired Celtics to mentor not just the current Cs but also down the line as the team transitions after next year. Lastly, Doc needs to re-evaluate and then change his coaching methodologies, as they are not working 100% efficiently. Focus on rebounding, let RR have total freedom, start DW and use RA as the sixth man, play and use the bench as there is talent sitting and wasting away (Bradley, Murphy, Wafer), and play the new rookies and any new FAs, etc.

This last title run by the core 3 could be very fun and extremely accomplished, but if the same old same old is rolled out again then I expect the same results; injuries notwithstanding. Go Cs…

Davis has always been a likeable guy, no matter how he plays. He wears his heart and emotion on his sleeve. Unlike Rondo you can usually tell what Glen is feeling. I’m glad to see him readily admit his problems and the correct help he is seeking. While everyone clamored that Lebron needed a sports psychologist I’ve never heard him address it and never will. Davis is willing to confront and admit his shortcomings and try to correct things. If only we could give him JuJuan Johnson’s vertical leap…

in order to have JaJuan Johnson’s vertical leap Davis needs to lose 100 pounds. basic physics dictate that the larger the mass, the harder to elevate off the ground.

Davis is a headcase who put himself and his contract above his team last season. Goodbye. Good riddance. He is poison to this team.
