Cowens praises Doc Rivers’ honesty

X’s and O’s matter. If Joe Hockey Player was hired to coach an NBA team, he would inevitably struggle, not knowing how to teach help side defense, not understanding the concept of a pindown screen, not wise enough to utilize his five players in a scheme that suits them.

Personality matters too. Think about John Kuester, known as an offensive genius for much of his professional career. Kuester’s first head coaching gig ended underneath a pile of dog crap — his players staged a mutiny in the middle of the season, Richard Hamilton was suspended (more or less) for no known reason, and the Pistons went 57-107 in Kuester’s two seasons. Sure, the record was at least partially due to lacking talent, but Kuester’s abrasive style and unbelievable lack of communication (he reportedly refused to tell Hamilton why he was not playing) managed to alienate an entire locker room in less than two full seasons. When his own team did not want to play for him, Kuester’s X’s and O’s, lauded for years, meant nothing.

Doc Rivers knows his X’s and O’s — Sebastian Pruiti, who watches more game tape than any human being not formally associated with the NBA, selected Rivers as the one coach he would want to draw up a last-second play.

But Dave Cowens believes Doc’s personality is his strongest suit. (ESPN Boston)

“Doc’s a great guy, and he’s smart. He’s a tough guy. When he talks, [the players] listen. They know he’s telling them the truth, and really, players respect that. They respect a guy that’s got the knowledge and he tells them the truth. Because they know a lot about the game, too. They’re not just learning it. They’ve been through five-, six-, seven-hundred games as a pro, as a college player, [and] high school player. So they’ve been around a lot of locker room talks and chalk talks and things like that. So, they understand. And he has a good way with the players, and I think the veterans really respect him, and they’ve got some strong character veterans and that just feeds down to the other guys that play on the team.”

Rivers certainly has faults. He rarely (if ever) trusts rookies, chokes the confidence out of certain bench players (Nate Robinson comes to mind as a prime example), and damn it, I often wish he could teach his squad how to rebound and provide a more consistent effort. But the players know Doc will be straight up with them. Even the ones who dislike Doc have to respect that.

As much as I respect and appreciate Doc being a “players” coach, which is a very underestimated quality and force within a team locker room and building their on court psyche, his sheer lack of understanding and focusing on rebounding derails all the good he brings to the team. Without going into my bizillionth rant about the Cs lack of rebounding I would hope that a coach of this stature would himself get prepared in the off-season as players do trying to improve their games. But that does not appear to be the case as the Cs rebounding has gone from #3 in their championship year to #29 last season (when we truthfully had more size). Solve the rebounding issue and I guarantee you will see more Celtic victories. Unfortunately, I don’t believe Doc will change or address this issue. Or address the other issues Jay mentions which also hurt the team. Ergo, this is why I do not consider Doc a great coach but only a good one that lucked into great talent. Go Cs…

Poor Dave. He’s my alltime favorite Celtic, but he’s completely lost the plot. Or maybe he’s trying to butter Rivers up for a job, which would be a good thing, since we need him to work with Big Baby.

Listen, Rivers’ strong suites are very strong. He’s probably the best coach in the league with the Xs and Os, and he’s probably the best with veterans. Watching the Thunder last year, it was painful to see how that team couldn’t seem to draw up and execute a play to save its life (or its season). You really had to appreciate Doc Rivers, watching that.

But Doc is TERRIBLE with young players, with the bench and, yes, with rebounding. He isn’t just bad at those things. He’s awful. If he doesn’t bring some people on board who are good at the things he is bad at, we are doomed. Period.

Also, he isn’t honest. He’s a company man. He’ll tell the player what Danny Ainge tells him to tell them.

Hey James, did Docs approach on rebounding change? Or did the talent change! You said yourself, they were 3rd in rebounding in 08

Frank…the talent got better with bigger bigs – Shaq, JO, Krstic, etc. The fact is Doc has a guard’s coaching style and their needs to be someone focused on the front line and getting them and the guards too (RR is above average) to rebound consistently. Instead of running back on defense when a Celtic shot goes up everyone should be crashing the boards. Their defense would be better because then they would be limiting their opponent’s shot total and getting more shots from added offensive rebs. Go Cs…
