JaJuan Johnson’s shooting impresses Boston Celtics teammate Rajon Rondo
Every once in a (long) while, the bleak world inhabited by the NBA lockout cracks open with a ray of sunshine, a quote that actually pertains to basketball, the greatest sport on earth. Tuesday, thanks to Mark Murphy and the Boston Herald, Rajon Rondo commented on JaJuan Johnson, the young, agile, 6-foot, ten-inch shooter from Purdue.
Rondo, who has been taking classes at the University of Kentucky, also organized a workout session in conjunction with another former Wildcat, Nazr Mohammed.
Many of Mohammed’s Oklahoma City teammates attended the sessions, though Rondo’s old friend Kendrick Perkins didn’t make the trip.
Rondo, in turn, invited former teammate Marquis Daniels and soon-to-be Celtics rookie JaJuan Johnson.
Johnson, like Rondo, is represented by agent Bill Duffy, and made an immediate impression with his shooting range.
“He’s a better shooter than I thought,” Rondo said. “He has KG range, which is saying something. He was very aggressive with the ball.”
The Celtics’ rookie power forward has KG range. At this point, I’m salivating for the season like I just caught a whiff of boneless buffalo wings. Too bad this goddamn lockout might never end.

I get it that he has a bit of KG in him, and that’s good, very good, but what we need is a center that can operate near the basket and likes to do it. We all saw what happened when you put a Rondo with a Shaq. We’ve got to see more of that. Somehow, some way, we need a Big Man who likes the paint.

Jermaine O’Neal, if crazy glue can hold his body together.

I’m just not counting on Jermaine. I love the way he came through last year, but as a first option at center, he’s a disaster. I think Danny should scour the D League and everyone else he can think of, looking for a big guy with a nose for offense in the paint. Somebody like that might be a project, but possibly the right project for this team? And I know it’s repetition for me to say this, but I’d bring in Cowens, or at least someone, to work with Baby on his paint moves. Baby, bless his heart, does seem to get it into his head to post up sometimes, and while he’s not the most effective in the world, he does have some moves that maybe could be developed….
