Roger Mason being recruited to Boston Celtics by Ray Allen

Roger Mason worked out at the Capital Sports Complex in Washington, D.C. on Monday afternoon with a few other Wizards, and said Ray Allen has made recruiting phone calls on behalf of the Boston Celtics. (Washington Examiner, h/t Green Street)

“This is good because we got pros here, a lot of the Wizards guys, which is good with me being a former Wizard and potentially coming here this season,” Mason said. “I’ve had guys calling. Ray Allen called about Boston, and I’ve talked to Carmelo about going back to New York, and Andray wants me to come back here to Washington. Hopefully I’ll have some good choices.”

If we can toss aside the fact that Mason has been in hibernation during each of the past two seasons (scoring 2.9 points on 33.3% shooting last season and 6.3 points on 38.9% shooting the year before), he wouldn’t be a terrible signing. He’d come cheap, he’s played a role on a contender before (in ’09 with the Spurs), and he can shoot from the perimeter, a trait the C’s bench sorely lacked last season.

Then again, we can’t disregard his hibernation. Mason has had one (maybe two, if you’re generous) good years in the league. The rest of his seven-year career has been spent as a bench-warming, towel-waving, how u-texting bit piece who misses far more shots than he makes. Mason’s overall shooting percentage has only reached 40% twice during the aforementioned seven years. That’s not good. Nor is he noted as a particularly adept defender.

Whichever team signs Roger Mason probably won’t be getting ’09 Mason, which is a shame, because ’09 Mason could play.
