On re-signing Sasha Pavlovic

I’ve often said there’s little to no difference between players at the end of NBA benches and star players in other top professional leagues worldwide — whether that’s the Spanish ACB League, the D-League or whatever. When I say that, Sasha Pavlovic is exactly who I have in mind.

The Celtics (oddly) re-signed Pavlovic, giving them 14 players in total. I’m not sure why. His PER has been somewhere between atrocious, abominable and “can’t we just re-sign a 41-year old Todd Day instead?” for the past four seasons, including one season when Pavlovic was the single worst player in the NBA by at least one measure. Using rational thinking, it’s difficult to imagine why the Celtics decided to stick with Pavlovic rather than add another NBA free agent, call up a current D-Leaguer or even sign the top scorer in the Boston YMCA men’s league. Pavlovic has been that bad for the past four seasons.

Doc Rivers noted on multiple occasions last season that he felt Pavlovic did a nice job defensively, and that’s fine. But he’s a disaster offensively and has been for a number of years. The 14th roster spot should have been given to someone young with potential, rather than a journeyman who has already proven — season after season — that he’s no good. It’s a curious signing, to be as kind as I can be, even considering that the Celtics need depth.

Love this kid. Tough as nails. Deceptively athletic. Excellent defender who can knock down the open jumper. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

My guess is that Jay just wants to chalk up some credibility points, so he won’t come off as a total shill for Danny.

Danny is a genius. I can’t wait for his next blockbuster deal. I sure am glad he paid Jeff Green 9 million instead of ten million to David West. That was certainly a good call.

Again, WTF??? I’d rather have Von Wafer than Sasha who is worthless and proved it over and over last year. Even Leon would have been better than this stiff.

paul… West took $$$ over a chance to play with 4 HOFs and compete for a championship. I don’t want players that think that way on the Celtics and who’s to say what DA’s offer was? It also would have cost us JO and in your scenario we would have skipped on JG so what bench would we have had? Who would back up PP? Sasha??? And I count 11 Cs Jay, so who are the other 3? Go Cs…

definitely not pavlovic lol. but who knows he might come in handy considering how everyone except ray allen gets injured as soon as they step on the court. expecting big things from the rookies though especiall jjj. hopefully kg can mentor him well and he can be one of the franchise players for us

Good deal that we don’t have scrubs like Perkins and Delonte around. Sasha and Green ALL THE WAY!!

    Thanx to our Resident Genius…

Perk sucks paul so that’s why he is gone. Read my last 1,000 post comments about he lack of skills and pathetic offense. West is another matter and definitely preferred over both Dooling and Pavlovic. Go Cs…

What the hell is going on with Delonte? No mention of him around here. Also, is Jeff Green dying? What did they find in his physical that made Ainge say we’re being very very cautious? His contract is on hold? Sounds like this will get worse.

Watching Pavlovic for a bit when he was with the Mavs, I can genuinely say I feel your pain. He just seems like such a liability, why would a team trying to stay in the playoff hunt waste their time that is ticking away on someone like him? A very odd signing indeed, so we’ll see what happens.

    great post!
